TSC Update
Goodbye Aoife,
Welcome Doris
Amendment 3
New recruitment procedures
We are very pleased that Substantial Amendment 3 has
been approved by the lead ethics committee and is currently
under local R&D review. Once activated for your site, you will
be able to approach newly admitted women who have not
received information antenatally, provided they
are in early stages of labour, or
are comfortable with epidural
Refer to the amended protocol (V6.0) for full details!
Please note:
Despite this, every effort should still be made to approach
women about SALVO during antenatal screening!
All women with non-elective sections continue to be
eligible, but we ask you to avoid recruiting women having
a caesarean section after a failed induction, who have no
other risk factors for bleeding (e.g. thrombocytopaenia
etc). For the purpose of defning failed induction in this
context, this is a failure to enter established labour as
defned by NICE guidance, which is progressive dilatation
from 4cm with regular painful contractions.
We are really pleased with
our overhauled patient
information sheet thank
you to everyone who
contributed, and particularly
to Paul Ayuk. We will print
customised versions for
your site (with local contact
details) and send them to you
by November.

Study to assess cell-salvage in obstetrics
Our frst Collaborators meeting was held at Barts Hospital
in London on 3rd October. Team members from 21 sites
attended thank you for your enthusiastic attendance!
We heard updates on the trial from Phil Moore as well as
summary of the pilot study from James Geoghegan; the team
from Sheffeld gave a very
informative presentation on
swab washing. Phil Moore
presented a case of placenta
accreta; and as a special
treat, Ana Pilar Betrn from
WHO presented interesting
facts and fgures on the
global use of Caesarean
sections.
The Trial Steering Committee met on 15th September. The
Committee would like us to remind everyone to consider
routinely washing swabs in theatre, as this will dramatically
increase the volume of returned blood during cell salvage.
We are saying a sad farewell to Aoife Ahern, our previous
Senior Trial Coordinator. We wish her all the best for the
future in Ireland and thank her for her stellar work for SALVO
throughout the last one-and-a-half years. You will be missed!
At the same time, we would like to welcome
Doris Lanz, who has taken over from
Aoife as the new trial coordinator. Doris
has previously worked within Queen
Mary University within the Centre
for Psychiatry, and prior to that has
coordinated cancer research trials in her
native Switzerland.

Study to assess cell-salvage in obstetrics
As of 30th September, our total recruitment to SALVO was 1594, and the monthly recruitment was 43. Given that most of these
were emergency Caesareans, that is an impressive number! Still, we hope that with the new amendment, you will be able to approach
even more women about the study. The next few months of recruitment will be particularly important for the future course of the
project many thanks in advance for all your efforts!
September Recruiter of the Month - Well done to the Sunderland team, who recruited 9 patients!
