ThyssenKrupp Northern Elevator is a full line manufacturer of
vertical transportation equipment. Our factories produce a
complete range of gearless, geared, hydraulic, and specialty
elevators.
GEARLESS ELEVATORS
Designed for a wide range of capacities and speeds from 500
FPM to 700 FPM, our gearless elevators incorporate the most
advanced controller technology available in the industry. Our
Northstar 9000 system, with artificial intelligence based logic
dispatching and closed-loop feedback motion control, expertly
directs the activities of elevator groups of up to 8 cars serving
as many as 72 floors.
GEARED ELEVATORS
Our geared elevator systems are available for capacities from
2100 lbs to 6000 lbs and speeds from 150 FPM to 500 FPM.
We are one of North America's most prominent manufacturers
of high efficiency geared machines, overspeed safeties,
governors and roller guides. Our control systems feature
closed-loop Variable Voltage Variable Frequency (VVVF) drive
systems, microprocessor based logic and the industry's most
complete set of integrated safety features.
HYDRAULIC ELEVATORS
We offer the most complete line of hydraulic elevators in North
America. Pre-engineered and custom elevators for capacities
from 2100 lbs to 6000 lbs and speeds from 50 to 175 FPM are
available. We feature conventional direct-acting designs in both
holed and holeless application, as well as unique roped
holeless hydraulic designs, which extend the application range
for hydraulic systems beyond previous limits.

Gearless elevators are the correct selection wherever building
height or extreme population density dictates the highest level
of elevator performance. Sophisticated motor controls ensure
high operating speeds and minimum floor-to-floor flight times,
without sacrificing passenger comfort and safety. Contact our
sales representatives for guidance in determining whether your
project demands the elite level of service gearless elevators
have to offer.

Hydraulic elevators, because of their top speed of 0.9 m/s, are
normally limited to low-rise applications with a maximum of five to
six stops. Hydraulics are low-rise favorites due to their simplicity, low
maintenance cost and because they do not require a load bearing
hoistway. Hoistway use is optimum, but motor horsepower and
electrical requirements are greater than comparable geared
elevators.

Hydraulic hospital elevators offer the same spacious cargo
compartments as geared hospital elevators, but are restricted to
lower rise and less demanding traffic applications. Other typical
applications include self-storage facilities, service cars for low-rise
garden hotels and apartments, and ambulatory care facilities.

Choosing a single slide or center opening elevator entrance with an
appropriate finish will affect your project's appearance, cost and
efficiency. Our unique "N" entrance appears to be a traditional
hollow metal entrance, but its rib construction makes it stronger and
2-hour fire-rated.

Work not Involved in the Elevator Contract
Other building trades, under supervision of the General Contractor or his Sub-Contractors, are involved in an elevator
installation. This work by others may vary depending upon local codes, statutes or work practices. Work by others will
normally consist of the following:
GENERAL
Provide a properly framed and enclosed legal hoistway, plumb and to agreed dimensions, including a proper pit with the
necessary ladders, drains, access doors and waterproofing, if required.
Provide suitable machine room with proper clearance for the elevator equipment plus proper lighting, ventilation, heating
and coolingthe room temperature must be maintained within 40F (5C) minimum to 90F (32C) maximum.
Provide the necessary structures to permit safe access to the machine room as defined by ASME A17.1, CSA B44 or
AS-1735 code requirements. Please note with very few exceptions, machine rooms and hoistways should be free of
equipment not essential to elevator operations.
Perform all cutting, filling, patching of walls and floors, plus the removal of all obstructions to permit proper installation of
the elevator. Setting of sleeves and pockets or blockouts for signal fixtures. All painting, except as otherwise specified.
Provide and maintain protective enclosure around hoistway and hoistway openings during the time the elevator is being
installed. Supply and install finished cab flooring.
STRUCTURAL
Construct adequate supports and foundations to carry the loads including impact loads of all equipment. Install the supports
for guide rail brackets and machine beams or overhead sheaves. If adjacent hoistways are used, divider beams at suitable
intervals must be provided for guiderail brackets.
Adequately support the walls above the entrance frames. The entrance frames are not designed to support overhead wall
loads. Provide rough opening min. 12" larger than entrance.
Furnish in the machine room, suitable equipment hoisting beams. Clear room under beams is to be 7ft minimum.
ELECTRICAL
Provide and maintain the proper electric feed to the terminals of each elevator control panel with all necessary main line
switches, circuit-breakers or fused disconnect switches, located at the lock jamb side of the machine room or as per layout
drawings.
Install permanent light fixtures and switches in each pit and machine room. Light switches are to be located on the jamb
side of pit and machine room access. The lighting in machine room should illuminate the front of each controller and be of a
value of not less than 200 lux at floor level. Lighting in pit should be of not less than 200 lux at the pit floor level. In addition,
a duplex receptacle, 15 Amp minimum, should be provided in each pit, machine room and machinery space. Illumination at
sill of every landing is 100 lux.
Furnish and install all fixed conduit, wiring and fittings required to connect remote systems (remote monitoring stations,
telephones, intercommunications, alarms, etc.) with feeders terminating at the elevator controller in each machine room.
Except when the hoistway is enclosed, provide smoke sensors when conditions require at each floor terminating at the
controller in the machine room, a separate smoke sensor shall be provided at the main floor operating independently from
the remaining smoke sensors. Furnish and install seismic switchesif requiredin the machine room.
