Artifact Description: This artifact is my Child Study, (assessments, plans, and professional report), from my pre-student teaching placement at Westview Elementary School. I had worked with a second grade student to help improve her reading skills. I was able to work with her for about 14 weeks using the Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI). Wisconsin Teacher Licensure Standard Alignment: This experience best aligns with Wisconsin Teacher Standard 8 Assessment. The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the learner. My experience aligns with standard eight because I had to learn how to use formal and informal assessments to assess my LLI reading group. The student I had chosen for my child study was also part of my LLI reading group so I was also able to assess her other three classmates.
As a result of this experience, I have learned that ongoing assessments are essential to the instructional process, and I recognize that its used to monitor and promote student learning. Statistics help to figure out where a student is at in a certain subject. It also helps us to figure out whether or not interventions are helping or arent helping students. The more data we have on a student, the better off we are to being able to help the student succeed. For my LLI reading group, I would assess a student every other day so each student was assessed at least once a week. UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition Statement Alignment: This experience best aligns with KSD4.b. Maintains Accurate Records The candidate values, understands, and can maintain accurate records and assessment data including a system for student completion of assignments, information concerning student progress, and a system for non- instructional activities with all record systems reflecting student contributions to their establishment and maintenance. Before starting in my placement, I was trained to use the LLI program. If I was ever confused, I was able to ask questions and go to the schools reading specialist for any help. She was a good resource to go to and was also able to help chart my data into the computer. As a result of this experience, I know assessing students is another important component to teaching. It is part of a cycle Assessment, Intervention, Teach and repeat. Assessment is not going to go away; its going to become much more involved in education than ever before. Being familiar with assessing and working with data, will help me become a better educator and assessor. Secondary Alignment(s): KSD1.F. Assessing Student Learning KSD3.d. Provides Feedback to Students Personal Reflection: What I learned about teaching and learning Ive learned that teachers must have more than one assessment piece to accurately assess their students. The more data I have on students, the more I will be able to make educated predictions or to prove if an intervention is working or is not working. I want to be able to use all the resources I can to help my students improve their learning. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator As a result of this experience, Ive learned that besides the assessments helping me help the students, it can also help the students themselves. If students can see a pattern in something they do not understand, they will be able to go back to the assessments to see how and what they did wrong. Students will then be able to correct their mistakes once they find the problem to the solution.
