WELCOME TO GRACE COVENANT!

Thank you for joining us today! We are an historic Presbyterian

congregation offering traditional worship and multiple ministries
for persons of all ages. Please join us following worship for fellowship
in the Social Room. Thank you for turning off your cell phones,
pagers, cameras, and other electronic devices for the duration
of morning worship.

Preparation for Worship

“If you believe what you like in the gospels, and reject what you don’t
like, it is not the gospel you believe, but yourself.”
~Aurelius Augustine

“Every high priest is selected from among men and is appointed to

represent them in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for
sins. He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going
astray, since he himself is subject to weakness. This is why he has to offer
sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.

No one takes this honor upon himself; he must be called by God, just as
Aaron was. So Christ also did not take upon himself the glory of
becoming a high priest. But God said to him,
‘You are my Son;
today I have become your Father.’

And he says in another place,

‘You are a priest forever,
in order of Mechizedek.’ ”
~Hebrews 5:1-6
A SERVICE FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD
December 6, 2009 The Second Sunday of Advent 11:00 a.m.

GATHER TO GLORIFY GOD

PRELUDE In Dulci Jubilo (In Sweet Jubilation) Dietrich Buxtehude
(1637-1707)

LIGHTING OF THE SECOND ADVENT CANDLE The Mboe Family

†CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 148 (selected verses)

Pastor: Praise the LORD.

Praise the LORD from the heavens,
praise him in the heights above.
People: Praise him, all his angels,
praise him, all his heavenly hosts.
Pastor: Praise him, sun and moon,
praise him, all you shining stars.
Praise him, you highest heavens
and you waters above the skies.
People: Let them praise the name of the LORD,
for his name alone is exalted;
His splendor is above the earth and the heavens.
All: He has raised up for his people a horn,
the praise of all the saints,
of Israel, the people close to his heart.
Praise the LORD.

†Please stand for these parts of the service.

†HYMN 13 (blue) Prepare the Way Bereden väg för Herran

†PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Gracious and merciful God, you sent us a great high priest,

who was tempted in every way, yet lived without sin.
Forgive us, O God, that though we claim to be disciples of Jesus,
we succumb to temptation at every turn.
Show us with each new day, our absolute dependence
on the one who is the source of our eternal salvation.
Guide us, as we seek to do nothing out of selfish ambition
and vain conceit, but to approach all things with an attitude of service.
This we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

OFFERING
ANTHEM The Eyes of All Wait Upon Thee Sir William Henry Harris
(1883-1973)

The eyes of all wait upon thee, O Lord:

and thou givest them their meat in due season.
Thou openest thine hand: and fillest all things living with plenteousness.
The Lord is righteous in all his ways: and holy in all his works.
The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him:
yea all such as call upon him faithfully.
He will fulfill the desire of them that fear him:
he also will hear their cry and will help them.
The Lord preserveth all them that love him.
– Psalm145:15-20

†DOXOLOGY 592 (blue) Old Hundredth

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him, above, ye heavenly hosts;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

SERMON “Christ Our Priest” Steve Cobb

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize

with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way,
just as we are–yet without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace
with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us
in our time of need.”
~Hebrews 4:15-16

†HYMN 144 (blue) Alleluia! Sing to Jesus! Hyfrydol

†AFFIRMATION OF FAITH “The Apostles’ Creed”

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day
he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth
on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall
come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the
life everlasting. Amen.

†GLORIA PATRI 579 (blue) Glory Be to the Father Greatorex

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
PRAYER OF INTERCESSION AND LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is
the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
