ADCs UltraWAVE GSM Network-In-a-Box (NIB) and UltraWAVE CDMA systems are complete
cellular networks that enable rapid deployment of secure mobile communications networks for
military operations. Designed for cost-effective and trouble-free service on bases, in training areas,
or in combat environments, these network systems can be deployed within minutes and can
provide secure cellular communications over a wide area. Available in truck-mount, trailer,
or transit case configurations, these compact systems are the fastest way to provide secure
and flexible communications for military applications.
Challenge
Secure and reliable mobile communications are an essential part of military operations. VHF
radios are bulky and expensive, limiting communications to a handful of personnel, but cellular
technology can enable communications for every squad member.
Unlike VHF radios, cellular phones are well known to military personnel so training is minimal.
In addition, cellular phones are small and light enough to carry with ease, and have far more
functionality with features such as an integrated phone book, text messaging (SMS) and
voice mail.
Unfortunately, traditional cellular networks are difficult and expensive to implement, so their
use has been limited only to large-scale operators. In smaller or less permanent locations, it has
been impossible to leverage the convenience and cost-effectiveness of commercial, off-the-shelf
(COTS) cellular communications technology.
Solution
ADCs UltraWAVE GSM Network-In-a-Box (NIB) and UltraWAVE CDMA systems are compact
cellular network systems that typically support fast and cost-effective implementation of secure
combat and non-combat communications over a 20-mile radius (depending on site topography).
When needed, multiple systems can be combined to cover larger areas of any size.
UltraWAVE GSM and CDMA systems enable the use of COTS technology for military applications.
When compared with proprietary radio technologies, cellular communications is less expensive,
uses smaller handsets, and offers a full path to future applicationssuch as GSM asset tracking
and handheld navigationthat are continually being created for the commercial market.
Compact enough to be carried by two men and simple enough to set up within hours, UltraWAVE
NIB and CDMA are fully-integrated cellular communications systems that support basic calling
services as well as advanced calling and data services. These networks can be self-contained,
limiting traffic to only a designated area, or they can be integrated with other military networks
or public cellular networks via satellite or microwave links.

In other scenarios, having a solid, easy-to-use network can make a significant contribution to troop
morale by enabling contact with friends and family back home. By integrating easily with public
telephone networks, UltraWAVE NIB and CDMA allow personnel to use their own phones
to call home from remote locations.
ADC military communications systems support GSM 85-1 encryption and CDMA scrambling. Security
can be further enhanced through the use of secure phones or high-security adapters on
off-the-shelf cellular phones, allowing for flexible implementation of any preferred security solution
for Type 1-level encryption.
