Horvidalla to page 4 F I n our Gospel (Mt. 22:34- 40) on this 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus teaches the community of His followers the Good News as the way of life in their relationship with God, self and neighbor: You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Mt. 38-39). Love is the greatest commandment because it embraces the whole law of God, and the second commandment is to love our neighbor who is Gods image. The greatest example of this is Jesus Himself He loved totally in obedience to His Father to the extent that He gave His whole life for us. So like Jesus, we too must love God above all things and others with our entire being. The first letter of John (1John 4:20) tells us: If anyone says, My love is fixed on God, yet hates his brother, he is a liar. One who has no love for the brother he sees, cannot love God he has not seen, Love for man is grounded on our love for God Who is our Father. All the commandments are based on love. We open ourselves to God by opening our hearts to Him in faithful prayer. Let us personally know the prayer revealed by Jesus. Jesus prayed so that He could connect Himself to the Father. According to Gandhi: Prayer has saved my life. Without prayer, I would have lost reason. If I have not lost peace, in spite of all the ordeals in my life, its because this peace comes from prayer. I can live a couple of days without eating but not without praying. Prayer, to me, is the morning key and the nights bolt. To love is to take time to pray for others who need our prayers. Gandhi also said: When you see misery that you cannot relieve, fast and pray. When I pray, I include the names of persons who come to mind. For all I know, they need help and my prayer intercedes for them. To love God is to open my mind to His Word in the Scriptures every day. In times of trouble or in sickness, God tells me: Dont let your heart be troubledTrust me (Jn 14:1). He is a never failing help. He is my stronghold, my refuge, my God in whom I trust! (Ps 91:2). Because they cling to me, I will rescue them, says the Lord. I will protect those who know my name. When they call to me, I will answer; in times of trouble I will be with them; I will deliver and honor them. I will satisfy them with long life and show them my salvation. (Ps 91:14-16). Gods word is truly my light. Through His word, He gives me direction, consolation, enlightenment and assurance that He is with me all the time. We love our neighbor by opening ourselves to the Word made flesh in our neighbors need, by opening our hearts to family, friends and even strangers. I take time to phone or text a friend. Who knows God sends me to comfort my friend in time of distress. A week ago, I received a phone call from my former grade 6 pupil who is now a civil engineer, residing in Davao City. What a great surprise! His call truly made my day! I take time to send flowers or send something to eat to cheer up a friend. What a happy thought! My love towards people is measured by the free time I dedicate to them. A boy takes time to visit his girlfriend to show his love for her. A mother prepares delicious meals for her family because she loves them. A father of a family goes home directly to dedicate his time to his wife and children. A teacher spends hours to prepare her lessons because she loves her students. A basketball player takes hours to train with his team mates to show his love and support for the team. A doctor solicitously takes care of his patients, even in the middle of the night. In return, he may sometimes receive eggs and chicken for his ministrations. A priest prepares his homily well to draw his flock closer to God. Our lawmakers would do well to check many of our laws, rules, and regulations whether these are based on love. If they are not they should be changed or be not approved into law at all. Does abortion show love for a human being in the mothers womb? How about euthanasia? You shall not kill. Does the murderer stop to think of the loneliness he causes in the hearts of the murdered mans family and relatives? You shall not steal. I like the commercial on TV about the boy who returns the extra change he receives from the cashier. This commandment of love is wholeheartedly demanding and concrete. Let me share with you a classic example of a widow who loved much. This happened in one of the suburbs of Mexico City. A chapel was being enlarged to accommodate thousands of people who flocked to the Church on Sundays. In the midst of the work, the priest-in-charge received a visitor from a neighboring CANDLE LIGHT (Oct. 26 - Nov. 1, 2014) CANDLE LIGHT (Oct. 12 - 18, 2014) Share what God has blessed you with! (May kasugpon) Y ou shall love the Lord, your God with all your heart, and your neighbor as yourself. What can be more challenging than the message of the Gospel we have today? The Lord has eloquently taught us how to love Him and our neighbors. Reflecting upon this Gospel, I was led to ask myself the following questions: How did I show love to people especially those who are sick and already old, asking for my time and presence to have lunch or dinner with them or just visit their house? Have I fully forgiven those people who hurt me or inflicted terrible pain in my life? How do I relate with them? If I have already forgiven them, why is it that sometimes I find myself avoiding them? How do I treat parishioners seeking for help? Do I have pure motivations? Am I motivated by love? Am I fair in showing or giving love to people? In other words, our Gospel for today led me to examine myself on where I am right now as a disciple of Christ in terms of loving people and think of what I can still do so that I can really be a loving person like Jesus. I believe this is also the invitation for you. May I invite you, amidst your busy schedule, to find time in reading and re- reading the Holy Gospel today, allowing the words of the Gospel to touch and scrutinize your heart, lead you to prayer, and move you to live out the Word of this Gospel so that you may progress in pastoral charity. Unless we engage ourselves in honest and sincere soul-searching and find out where are we right now in terms of loving God and others, we may find it difficult to discern ways and means to improve ourselves and become more holy, more loving, more compassionate, and more committed to live out the ways of Gods love Lets make the words from the Book of Psalms as our own prayer: Probe me O God and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts See if my way is crooked and lead me in the way of old. Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way. (Ps. 139, 23) As I, together with my 9 brothers, celebrate today our 5 th Ordination Anniversary, please be one with us in thanking the Lord for the gift of the priesthood. Five years ago, we were ordained at St. Clements Church. Please pray for our holy perseverance. May we be sustained to become priests who are so deeply in love with God and with others. May we become priests until the end of our life. The Gospel gives us inspiration to love and serve God. This is the motivation which invigorated us after the choir formation given by Rev. Fr. Nathaniel Galgo Gentizon, last Sunday, October 12, 2014. Our formation started with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at 8:00 a.m., after which, we proceeded to the Pius XII building for the formation. It started with a prayer by Fr. Nathaniel. Then he asked us: Why are we here? Why did we join the choir? To give light to our quests, he discussed the three main purposes why we are serving in the Church: to know God, to love Him, and to obey Him. When we accomplish these, we glorify Him. According to Fr. Nathaniel, it is important for us to realize that we are joining in the choir not just because we want it but because the Lord called us to be of service in the Church. Then, Fr. Nathaniel allowed us to share our insights and reflections. As a member I also shared my own T he core group of the Family for Christ Association (FFCA) recently held their monthly meeting at the residence of Bro. Bob and Sis. Rose Tabobo, the association president, at Cuartero Street, Jaro, Iloilo City. The main agendum of the meeting was to identify the different religious activities or tasks where the FFCA members could be of help or participate. I revealed that in our hometown in Barotac Viejo, I was also a member of the choir. After two years, I transferred here in the city to continue my studies. Although I attend Sunday Masses, I felt that something was lacking in my life. There was something more that I longed for. Then one day I met someone in school. We had an interesting conversation. I opened up myself to him. I told him of my wish to serve God by joining the choir. What a coincidence! He is a choir member and he invited me to join their choir at every Saturday afternoon Mass at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles. I accepted the offer and now, I am a new member of the HKC family. I satisfied my longing to serve God. I found a new home and a new family. Even in my hectic schedule I give time and effort to serve the Lord. As Rick Warren says, Faithful Servants never retire. You can retire from your career, but you will never retire from serving God. Our formation ended with a realization that we need to nurture and enhance our relationship with God and with one another. We do not just sing in the Mass. Most importantly, we pray with and for the whole Christian Community throughout the Mass. To all the youth who have a calling to serve the Lord, come and join the Choir or youth ministry! The priest did not want to receive the modest sum from her knowing that she could not often satisfy her own hunger, as she lived in extreme poverty. He knew that the money would be much more valuable to her. But she told the priest: This money is neither mine nor yours. It belongs to God. I have given it to him for HIS house. The priest could no longer resist her. At last, he placed the folded bill in his shirt pocket and thanked the old woman with a big hug. ALL SAINTS DAY AND ALL SOULS DAY SCHEDULE OF MASSES AT JARO CATHEDRAL CEMETERY November 1, 2014, Saturday 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Mickey Cardenas T o prepare the faithful for the Papal Visit on January 15-19, 2015, the Archdiocese of Manila is now offering kits containing formation modules for the visit of Pope Francis to the Philippines. Each kit contains four sessions designed to be given one module for each of the four months leading up to January 2015. These are 12 sessions designed as 1.5 hour sessions for small group settings, such as MKKs, MAMOS, LOMAS, church groups, schools, families, and other organizations. While the diocese or parish can entrust the program to any person or body that could disseminate and implement it, it is advised that the facilitators be prepared for these sessions and that they read through the materials beforehand. ThemodulescanalsobeusedforSunday Masses to prepare for the Papal Visit. Priests and liturgical coordinators are advised to put it in an appropriate place in the liturgy, for example, before the entrance procession, in the homily, or after Communion. To explain how the Formation Modules came about, the Chairman of the Central Committee for the Papal Visit 2015, Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, in his letter to Archbishops, Bishops and Diocesan Administrators, said that the Central and Steering Committees of the Papal Visit had earlier agreed to formulate a set of reflection-formation modules that National Seafarers Sunday Ginsaulog Claire U. Dignadice kaugalingon sa pag-ukod sa ila ubra. Kasubong man sang mga nabilin nila nga pamilya sila nagaantus man. Ginhatagan man sing kahigayunan ang tagsa-tagsa nga makapaambit sang ila balatyagon; asawa, anak, iloy kag amay nga seaman. Nangin madinalag-on ang pagpaambitanay.
