of llfe have lncreased ln recenL decades wlLh Lhe process of globallzaLlon and, more recenLly, as a consequence
of Lhe Arab Sprlngs evenLs ln Lhe souLh-MedlLerranean counLrles. WhaL currenL mlgraLlon pollcles spell ouL for
Lhe mlgranL populaLlon ls excluslon, deaLh, deLenLlon, and denlal of fundamenLal human rlghLs.

1he MedlLerranean serves as an example: from PearL of Lhe Cld World" and anclenL culLural crossroad, lL has
become a marlne graveyard. 1he offlclal number of vlcLlms along Lhe borders of Lhe Luropean conLlnenL, for
Lhe lasL 23 years, ls 21,344. Cf Lhls LoLal, 2,332 are Lhe vlcLlms ln 2011, aL leasL 390 ln 2012, 801 ln 2013, and
already more Lhan 3,000 ln Lhe flrsL nlne monLhs of 2014.

1he shlpwreck of so-called carreLLe del mare" has become a normal occurrence, rlghL under Lhe nose of
