St Kosmas and St Damianos were Holy Unmercenary Physicians and
Miracle-workers.
They were brothers - both in the flesh and in the spirit, having been born
somewhere in Asia Minor of a pagan father and a Christian mother
St Theodota.
After their father's death, their mother devoted all her time and effort to
educating her sons and raising them as Faithful Christians as True
Disciples of Christ.
By the Grace of God St Kosmas and St Damianos matured as Sweet Fruit
of their beloved mothers Labours, and great Luminaries of the world.
They were well educated in the art of medicine and freely ministered to
the sick refusing to accept any form of payment.
They healed those who suffered physical and mental or Spiritual
ailments - not so much with medicine as by the Divine Name of our
Lord Jesus Christ.
St Kosmas and St Damianos were referred to as the Unmercenary
Physicians because they healed freely and unconditionally everyone
who came to them and thus they fulfilled the Divine Commandment
of Christ Who instructed His Holy Apostles and His Disciples throughout
all ages: ... freely you have received, freely give! (MATTHEW 10:8).
They were adamant and meticulous in Healing people free of charge,
when St Damianos was persuaded to accept three eggs from an
equally persistent woman named Palladia, St Kosmas became
extremely angry with his brother to such an extent that he demanded
not to be buried alongside his brother after his Repose.
In fact, St Damianos had not accepted the three eggs as a reward for
Healing the ailing Palladia, but rather because she adjured him to
accept them in the Divine Name of the Most-Holy Trinity, which he
then could not refuse.
Nevertheless, after their Repose in Christ in the town of Fereman, having
been irreconcilable in life, they were eventually buried together
according to a Revelation from God.
The Holy Brothers were Great Miracle-Workers both during their life and
after their Repose.
There was a well known report of a snake having crawled through the
mouth and into the stomach of a certain farm labourer while he slept,
and the unfortunate man would have died in the greatest pain had
he not, in the last moment, invoked the Help of St Kosmas and St
Damianos.
Thus, the Lord glorified forever the Miracle-Working of those who had
Glorified Him on Earth by means of their unwavering Faith, Purity and
Mercy.
Many Miracles have continued to occur even after the Repose of these
Holy Unmercenary Physicians of Christ.
At Theremanea, nearby the Church of St Kosmas and St Damianos, a
certain man by the name of Malchos had set off on a long, far
journey, leaving his wife all alone for the duration.

However, he prayerfully entrusted her to the Heavenly Protection of the
Holy Brothers, St Kosmas and St Damianos.
But the enemy of all mankind, having possessed one of Malchos' friends,
planned to destroy the good woman.
After a certain time had passed after the departure of her husband, the
wicked man went to her and told her that Malchos had instructed
him to take her to where he waited for her.
The woman, being honest and upright, believed him and gladly left the
safety of her home, thinking that she would soon be reunited with her
beloved spouse.
Soon she realised that he had been leading her to a solitary place where
he intended to assault her and then kill her.
She immediately called upon God with her deep Faith and fervent
Prayers, and suddenly two fearsome looking men appeared and
frightened her cunning captor, who fled in fear of his own life but
instead of saving it, he lost it by falling over a very high cliff.
The two men then led the faithful woman back to the security of her
home, and, bowing deeply to them she enquired of them: "By what
name do they call you, my compassionate rescuers to whom I shalt be
grateful to the end of my days?
They replied: We are the servants of Christ, Kosmas and Damianos" and
immediately vanished right before her eyes.
The good woman, with trembling and with much Joy, told everyone
about what had happened to her, and Glorifying God she went
tearfully went to the Holy Icon of the Unmercenary Physicians and
offered many Prayers of Thanksgiving for her Deliverance from the
evil one.
From that time on, the Holy Unmercenary Brothers, St Kosmas and St
Damianos, were venerated as the Holy Protectors or Patrons of the
Sanctity and inviolability of Christian Marriage, and as the Holy
Granters of Peace and Harmony to conjugal life.
Finally, another Miracle - the first transplant - is attributed to St Kosmas
and St Damianos although no detailed account is to be found.
In the 4
th
century, a Priest suffered greatly with a badly diseased leg.
The Holy Unmercenaries appeared to him, and, taking the healthy leg
from an Ethiopian man who had Reposed, they transplanted it onto
the Priest, which was clearly evident to all those around him, and
which has also been recorded in the iconography of certain churches
dedicated to the Holy Unmercenaries in Greece.
St Kosmas and St Damianos, and all the other Holy Unmercenaries are
invoked in the Holy Mystery of Holy Unction in the Orthodox Church,
and Hymns to them are chanted after the Service while the Faithful
receive Anointing.
They are also the Patron Saints of the "Philoptochos" (i.e. "Love for or
Friends of the Poor") of the Greek Orthodox Church and being great
Saints we honour them while emulating their Faith, voluntary Poverty,
Charity, and zealous Love for Christ and service to others.

O D E 1
I shall open my mouth and the Spirit
will inspire it, and I shall utter the
words of my song to the Queen and
Mother: I shall be seen radiantly
keeping Feast and JOYFULLY
PRAISING HER MIRACLES
O D E 3
O Mother of God, Thou living and
plentiful Fount, grant strength to
those united in Spiritual Fellowship,
who sing Hymns of Praise to
Thee: and in Thy Divine Glory grant
them Crowns of Glory.
O D E 4
Perceiving the Unsearchable Purpose of
God concerning Thine Incarnation
from a Virgin, O Most High, the
Prophet Habakkuk cried: Glory to
Thy Power, O Lord!
O D E 5
The whole world was amazed at Thy
Divine Glory: for Thou, O Virgin,
Who has not known wedlock, has
been Translated from earth to the
Eternal Mansions to the Life without
end, bestowing Salvation upon all
who sing Thy praises.
O D E 6
As we celebrate this Sacred and
Solemn Feast of the Theotokos, let
us come, clapping our hands, O
people of the Lord, and Glorifying
God Who was Born of her.

O D E 7
The Holy Children bravely trampled
upon the threatening fire, preferring
not to worship created things rather
than the Creator, and they sang in
Joy: Blessed art Thou and praised
above all: O Lord God of our
Fathers!
O D E 8
We Praise, we Bless and we Worship
the Lord!
The Offspring of the Theotokos saved
the Holy Children in the furnace.
He Who was then prefigured has
since been born on earth, and He
gathers together all Creation to sing:
O ye Works of the Lord: Bless ye the
Lord and exalt Him above all
forever!
