Music Experiences
Headwater School of Music and the Arts
Beginning in September 2011, I have taught piano lessons to students with varying
levels of skill. The Headwater School of Music has been serving the Bemidji fine arts
community since 1992. This private non-profitable school offers private lessons,
group classes, and workshops in a variety of art and music interests. My studio
consists of 13 students, ages 9-14, who are taught through methods chosen by me
to fit each students needs.
Teaching Assistantships
At Bemidji State University some faculty offer teaching assistantships to better serve
the students. In Spring and Fall of 2011 I took advantage of these opportunities in
Music Theory and Class Piano. In Music Theory, my duties included class
presentations, leading a weekly study session, tutoring individual college freshmen
and sophomores and explaining course material through different approaches. The
Class Piano course was attended by freshmen who had little/no piano exposure. I
often worked individually with these students and led them in piano exercises and
technique. The course professor often called upon me to evaluate individuals
performances for grade.
Collaborative Music
With a music department as active and diverse as Bemidji States there is great
demand for piano accompanists. I have been hired by vocalists and instrumentalists
to prepare accompaniment and duets for their recitals, auditions, juries and contests.
I have accompanied the university choir and many choral groups in the community.
Opera
In July 2011 I was hired by the Loon Opera Company of Bemidji as their rehearsal
pianist. It was a three week project that ended with two performances of Mozarts
The Marriage of Figaro. My contract demanded I attend every afternoon and evening
rehearsal which took place on a daily basis.
2008 Recital
Of my own aspiration, I presented a solo recital as a high school senior in a series of
two concerts. The program included Schuberts Impromptus Op. 90 No. 2 Allegretto,
Mozarts Piano Sonata in F minor K332, Bartok Suite Op. 14, and Haydns Piano
Sonata in A flat major Hob. 46 and Chopins Military Polonaise.
2009 Recital
As a sophomore at Bemidji State I presented a non-degree recital in Bemidji and
Mankato. The program included Beethovens Piano Sonata Op. 22, Debussy Preludes
Bruyeres and Feux dartifice and Rachmaninoff Op. 23 Preludes 4 & 5.
Concerto
As a junior in 2010 at Bemidji State I prepared Mendelssohns Piano Concerto No. 1
in G minor and performed it with a fellow student playing the orchestra reduction.
Other Solo Performances
I have also performed solos in piano studio recitals and Department concerts.
Master Class
I participated in a number of master classes throughout my high school years; most
recently I was critiqued by Alexander Gindin whose 2009 tour included Bemidji.
Wind Ensemble
While attending Bemidji, involvement in a major ensemble was required. I played the
trombone.
Newman Center
My religious practices guide me to be very involved in church activities. I volunteer
my pianistic talents twice a week at the on-campus Newman Center at Bemidji State.
I prepare a number of hymns and led the congregation at masses.
