“ON THE HYPOTHETIC EQUATIONS OF

INTERSECTING RAYS”

Abstract
Consider two rays on a plane, it is possible that these lines will intersect
each other. The location of the point of intersection of these lines depends
on the distance between the finite endpoints of the two half-infinite lines
and the form of how these two half-infinite lines intersect each other. This
form of intersection is represented by any values or equations [8]. This
values hypothetically exist as Va→b and Vb→a . It is shown in this paper
the full details in derivation of the formulas of the hypothetic equations.
The results also show that the value of the hypothetic equations is reliable.

1 Background of the Study

In geometry, a half-infinite line or a ray AB is the set of points which

is the union of the segment AB and the set of all points C for which

it is true that B is between A and C. The point A is called the

endpoint of AB [7]. In [8], the author stated that if there are two

half-infinite lines in a plane then, the lines may or may not intersect

each other. Logically for intersecting lines, the location of the point

of intersection depends on the distance between the initial points of

the half-infinite lines and the angles formed by these half lines with

1
the line determined by the initial points.

Also, the author established that if La and Lb are the distances

between each initial point to the point of intersection of half-infinite

lines a and b, respectively, and R is the distance between the initial

points of half-infinite lines a and b, the relation between La , Lb and

R can be defined as La ∼ R, Lb ∼ R. Moreover, the location of

the points of intersection of the half-infinite lines depend on how

these half-infinite lines intersect, it means that there are values that

represent each form of intersection of two half-infinite lines.

The author stated that these values hypothetically exists as Va→b

defined as the value that represent the form of half-infinite line a

intersects half-infinite line b, and Vb→a defined as the value that

represent the form of half-infinite line b intersects half-infinite line

a. These values should satisfy the general equation: La = Va→b R

and Lb = Vb→a R.

For simplicity, the term ray denoted by AB, will be used in this

expository work, instead of the term and notation half-infinite line

a used in [8].

2 Objective of the Study

This study aims to discuss in detail all concepts presented by Maman

Fathurrohman in [8]. Specifically, the following will be exposed.

1. The derivation of the hypothetic equation Va→b and Vb→a .

2. Va→b and Vb→a are reliable.

3 Significance of the Study

This study is a point of interest in the Euclidean Geometry. It

provides additional knowledge on the study of lines and their form

of intersection. In one way or another, this will also help in solving

some problems in plane geometry more specifically in computer-

based computation.

4 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study is based on Plane Euclidean Geometry. The rays consid-

ered here are intersecting rays whose initial points lie on the x-axis

and extends towards positive infinity. Moreover, the slope of these

rays are both positive or both negative.

5 Methodology

This paper is an exposition of Maman Fathurrohman’s paper “IN-

TERSECTION OF TWO HALF-INFINITE LINES; IN SEARCH

FOR HYPOTHETIC EQUATIONS”. Basic concepts and prelimi-

nary results are being presented to support the main results.
