Q1

(a) Personalities
Green: go-getter, hard worker, aggressively campaigned for the position he wanted, talked
about work even at dinner to his boss, great rapport with clients, outspoken - challenged Davis
numbers, not afraid to challenge superiors, charismatic, believed in his approach more than
anything else, great in selling ideas to clients, can think quickly on his feet
Davis: wanted to pick someone else for his old position, didnt like it when Green challenged his
numbers he has himself moved up the hierarchy with time and hard work account exec then
market specialist and then senior market specialist may be he thought Green got a shortcut by
impressing Mcdonald, - age factor, likes to micro manage things, very organized and expects
same things from his juniors too, does not like to hear criticism
(b) Style of working
Green: attained a lot of respect and got a lot of work done in a few months, conservative,
doesnt believe in believe in wasting time to make ppts and develop hard data to back up his
claims, not very organized - does not always follow his calendar, goes with his gut feeling, hasnt
coordinated well with Davis, good salesman great in selling his ideas, outspoken and fearless
believes in himself, avoided interaction with Davis, works alone,
Davis: believes in working hard in an organized way, very optimistic - expected company to
grow@10%, believes in backing up claims with hard data n ppts etc, likes to micro manage,
wants people working under him to follow his rules n regulations sincerely, believes that every
contribution should be documented, feels Green is unimaginative conservative and lacks effort
and enthusiasm,
(c) Expectations
Green: wanted to impress the senior executives quickly and get a position at corporate HQ,
moving up the corporate ladder very quickly, a supporting boss who believes in his abilities and
put up with his style of working, who takes criticism constructively
Davis: expected a lot more of Green, expected to be kept in the loop on all matters keep him
updated on the progress, wants him to be more organized, wants him to document all his
efforts, does not criticize him openly in a meeting, come out with innovative ideas (imaginative
marketing approaches) and try to reach the impossible, come out with new strategy ideas n
backup your claims properly,
Q2 Green was very young when he was promoted to his position. As a result Macdonald told him to
take insight from superiors and others who held more experience than he did. Green messed up by not
doing so. He should have coordinated more with Davis than he did and also should not have avoided
him like he did. Others mistakes have been highlighted in the mails and in the text as well.
Mistakes:
Not organized, should have updated Davis regularly on his progress
Should document his efforts, and make ppts and collect data to backup his claims in front of his
clients
A little too outspoken (too soon) in the meeting, could have suggested his opinion to the boss
offline
Should have been more creative and came out with new imaginative marketing approaches
Did not built up a rapport with his seniors
Source of conflict:
(1) Davis did not get to choose his successor, so he takes it out on Green
(2) Green did not have a chat with Davis about how to run things e.g. Davis not returning calls and
updating his Outlook calendar no organised
(3) Different views on how to run things e.g. Davis wanted data to back up claims while Green thought
that better client relationships was the key Green believes in letting him free, does not want to get
tied up by Davis by micro managing his activities Davis believes in exact opposite
Q3 Davis was probably taking out his frustration at not being able to choose his successor on Green,
he may also have been taking it out on him for questioning his judgment about growth rates in the
meeting. Also it could be a personal motive as Davis in working hard to move up the corporate ladder
like he did, but Green has managed to do in so little time. So he might doubt his abilities and questions
the way he impressed Mcdonald in such a less time.
Mcdonald believed in Green and his way of working, but has more faith in Davis as he a senior person
and has been associated with the organization for a longer period of time. So she goes by Daviss
judgment on the situation.
Q4 Problem: Chance of Green getting sacked due to perceived lack of effort and enthusiasm from
previous holder of position
Options: Meet McDonald and discuss in detail, memo McDonald in detail, accept Davis and accept his
challenge, do not accept Davis and discuss with Davis, look out for another job
Criteria: Threat to job, time, independence, chance of growth in the company/industry,
Recommendation: Meet Mcdonald
