Thyroid is the only hormone that affects virtually every cell in the body; thus,
there are dozens of symptoms caused by hypothyroidism, including hair loss,
fatigue, weight gain, depression, poor circulation, dry skin, dry hair, peeling
and splitting nails, and emotional instability. A large number of women suffer
from symptoms of low thyroid output (hypothyroidism), even though they
test within the normal thyroid ranges in laboratory blood tests. The problem
with the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) blood test is the normal reference
range is too wide. Overreliance on the TSH level alone is one reason why so
many women are told their thyroid tests are normal even though they feel
many symptoms of hypothyroidism. Learn about thyroid imbalance signs and
symptoms, testing and treatment options.

A
LETTER FROM THE TE
magazine
Giving thanks
November is catered to comfort: cozy blankets, scented candles and hearty meals
meant to touch our souls and bring about pleasant nostalgia. Its easy to envision
the things the season brings, but what about what it brings about in us?
It can be difficult to think of this month without jumping to Thanksgiving
and the sometimes-hectic anticipation surrounding it. Every year, the fourth
Thursday of the month is an excitedly and anxiously awaited celebration with
enough stress to go around.
Amongst the warmth and contentment of the season, where does this oftenaccompanying pressure come from? Hosting the annual event and preparing food
for family and friends? The inevitable aftermath and cleanup? Maybe from the
notion that Thanksgiving opens the gate to the whirlwind that is the winter season.
What the holiday is really about is simple: giving thanks.
In our everyday lives, things become ordinary. This isnt necessarily a negative, but we tend to take things for granted and forget to appreciate the little
things. Yet in November, we spend the weeks leading up to the big day thinking
about what we are most grateful for.
What if we carried this tradition into our lives year-round? How much richer
would our moments be?
Much, according to Michael Craig Miller, M.D., former editor-in-chief of
the Harvard Mental Health Letter and an assistant professor of psychiatry at
Harvard Medical School. There are several advantages to feeling and expressing
gratitude.
BEING THANKFUL CAN HELP YOU:
Feel more positive emotions. Relish good experiences. Improve health. Deal
with adversity. Build strong relationships.
Being appreciated and recognizing worth in others simply feels good, but really,
being grateful also has clear benefits.
As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is
not to utter words, but to live by them. John F. Kennedy
Natures Pathways feels honored to offer you words providing health and wellness wisdom to live by. Thank you for supporting us and our mission to bring
our community together.
Were grateful for you this Thanksgiving and every season.

Learn how to
recover from
stress and
get control of
your
health
By Randi Mann, NP
Diagnosis
A skilled health care provider can help you recover from whatever
stage of HPA dysfunction you are in by listening to your symptoms, seeking to understand your lifestyle and nutritional status
and offering saliva testing to detect if you have an imbalance in
your cortisol and DHEA levels.
Treatment
Recognize that your adrenal glands are not the underlying cause
they are just caught in the crossfire. The best treatment is to
address the root cause: stress. I encourage my patients to identify
their daily stressors and take back their health by establishing a
healthy daily routine, including:
Getting at least eight hours of refreshing sleep (go to bed by
10 p.m.)
Learning to say no when you have reached your limit
Eating a protein-rich breakfast (containing 20-25 grams of
protein) before 10 a.m.

Weightlifting breathing
techniques and including
nuts in a healthy diet
By Karmen Nenahlo
Question: I like to eat nuts but usually avoid them because they
are high in fat and calories. But recently, Ive seen information in
magazines saying nuts are good for you. Is it true, and how can
that be with a food so high in fat?
Answer: Eating nuts as part of a healthy diet can be good
for your heart. Nuts contain polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, which may have an effect on reducing blood
levels of both total and LDL (bad) cholesterol. Nuts
also contain protein and fiber which helps you
feel full, so they make a great on-the-go
snack.
Yes, nuts are high in calories,
but you dont need to eat much to
reap the benefits as a handful is
considered a serving. Almonds,
cashews and pistachios are all
great choices. When possible,
make sure to choose nuts that
are raw or dry roasted for the most
nutritional value.

How
progressive
education
helps children
flourish
By Milada Rice
s parents and caregivers, we have the pleasure and privilege of being the inspiration for our childrens first learning experiences. As a parent, I had always envisioned
what key ingredients I believed should be an integral part of the
learning experience for my three children. First and foremost,
educational experiences, in their best moments, will inspire a love
of learning that continues for each child into adulthood. Second,
these experiences will be geared toward both the individual and
toward the community, that each child be awakened to their
uniqueness and talents, and be encouraged to develop a healthy
and inquisitive acceptance of the multi-faceted world we live in.
Additionally, learning requires trust and safety in all ways intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual.
These key ingredients are what have inspired me to become a
fan of what is known as progressive education.
Progressive education as we know it today was seeded by
John Dewey, who led a movement of student-centered learning,
opposing the authoritative and rigid model of the 1920s. While
progressive schools today come in many forms, some principles
are common to them all:
CHILD-CENTERED CURRICULUM: Learning is driven by
the interest of each individual child.
A HANDS-ON APPROACH: Learning happens when we
touch, taste, feel and do.
DEPTH: Subject matter is not compartmentalized, but each
relates to the next, as it is in life.
DEMOCRACY: The members of the classroom are a part of
the decision making about the rules of the classroom, and
help uphold those rules.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT: Parents are encouraged to

Make today
the day to
change
By Heather LaFond
f youre waiting for the right time to make a change, this is it.
When were looking for an excuse to put off our action, we will
always be able to find one. The truth is, everyone is busy, and
everyone has things to do. There is one main difference between
those who are successful at improving their health and those that
are still sitting on the coach. Successful people pay no attention to
excuses they take action!
Change can be intimidating, and a lot of times we like to put
difficult tasks on the backburner and hope that they dont boil
over. Weve all been there, weve put off something because it isnt
convenient, or it makes us uncomfortable. Telling ourselves, Ill
do it tomorrow, we allow ourselves to remain in an unhealthy
state and promise that after this next week, its time to buckle
down! We try to rationalize to ourselves, Once my children are
in school, I will start. The truth is there will never be a perfect
time. You must make yourself a priority.
The harsh reality is if you dont take care of yourself, who will
take care of your family? Stop and think about this: where would

your family be if they didnt have you in their life? Often we get
caught up in taking care of everyone elses needs and ours get
placed on that backburner. You owe it to yourself and your family
to take the time to focus on improving your health mentally,
emotionally and physically. Be proactive. Dont let things get to
the point of boiling over before you decide to make a change!
Change is typically never a linear process. We take a few steps
forward and a couple steps back. With persistence comes success.
If youre overwhelmed and dont know where to start, there is
nothing wrong with asking for help. Fitness professionals such
as registered dieticians and certified personal trainers are a great
place to start. Also, there is a whole field of psychology dedicated
toward helping individuals to make a lasting lifestyle change: wellness coaching.
Wellness coaches are trained in the psychology of behavior
changes and how to best guide their clients toward successful
healthy habits. Unless an individual is ready to move forward
through each stage of change, they will not be successful at maintaining a lasting lifestyle change.
A lot of individuals may be stuck in the lifestyle change stage
of pre-contemplation. This is not even recognizing that there is
a problem. Often individuals who dont realize they have health
concerns wont know to make a change until the straw breaks the
camels back.
After a problem is realized, the next lifestyle change stage is
contemplation. Contemplation is when an individual is considering making a change. They weigh their options and think about
moving forward. Im sure that each of us can think of a time when
we have wanted one of our loved ones to become healthy and tried
to encourage them in every way possible to take responsibility. But
until they realize this for themselves and are ready, willing and able
to make that change, they will remain in the stage of contemplation.
When an individual is actively taking steps toward reaching

you purchase and ensures you are using your money on what you
intended to spend it on. Leaving your credit cards at home also
helps you avoid making disposable purchases like eating out after
a long day of shopping, catching a movie or recharging your shopping batteries with a cup of coffee.
If you do need to use a credit card, avoid using a store card.
Businesses will entice you with sales and deals when you use
their card, especially around the holidays, but store cards usually
come with huge interest rates. Be smart about using credit. Check
with your credit union or bank for a lower-interest credit card
and make sure you have a plan for paying off holiday credit card

There are hundreds of online shopping sites that offer deals and
free shipping, especially during the holidays. Sites like www.pricegrabber.com, www.bradsdeals.com and www.retailmenot.com are
good resources to investigate to see where you can find the best
price possible. A word of caution, however; its very easy to overspend when shopping online so be sure to consult your list and
focus on what you need to purchase.
Lastly, remember that not every gift needs to be purchased.
Sometimes a homemade gift, participating in a service project, or
spending extra time with family and friends throughout the year
is the only thing needed. Happy Holidays!

Celebrating

They have done the same for other officers since. They certainly
showed great support to the Van Sambeeks, but they also showed
great honor to Brian, Wilkinson said. I suppose his story touched
us a little bit more because Brian was shot trying to rescue a member
of the Afghan police. We sort of related to that.
Once Eisch recovered, the force presented him with a plaque.
It was very cathartic for all of us to have that moment with him,
Wilkinson said, after wed been praying for him and caring for
him all that time.
Encouraging other businesses to develop positive policies for
an employees medical crisis was a big reason for getting involved

Supplements
for
children
By Crystal M. Hill, E-RYT, CTA,
CYPT and Nutrition Coach
oy, oh boy, we have come a long way from Flintstone vitamins! Many of us know its in our best interest to take a
multivitamin of some sort. With depletion of nutrients
in the soil used to grow our vegetables, the increase of on-thego eating, and the high amount of processing many of the foods
we eat receive before consumption, we are absorbing a great deal
less of the nutrients we would have 50 years ago eating the same
foods. Therefore, supplementation is absolutely essential for a
large percentage of the population! This includes one of our most
delicate and precious populations children!
If I feed my child a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean protein
and whole grains, they are getting enough of what they need from
food, right? Possibly if they are good eaters but for most
children this is not the case.
Picky eaters
Children with eating disorders
Little ones who do not eat regular or well-balanced meals
Those lacking vitamin D through diet or sunlight exposure
Children with certain chronic diseases or food allergies
Kids with an omega-3 deficiency

Choosing supplements
Cautions
Please always speak with your childs health care provider prior to
giving your child supplements, particularly if your child is taking
any medications or has a serious health condition. Certain vitamins
and minerals can interact with medications your child may take.
Follow dosage instructions. Mega doses of vitamins and minerals can be toxic! For example, iron, vitamin A and vitamin D. Be

Although supplementation
is important, do not rely on
supplements as a substitute
for healthy foods!
mindful that dosage can differ depending on the age of the child.
In addition, many foods are enriched with vitamins which can
be a good thing but can lead to over supplementing certain
vitamins if eaten in addition to the supplement.
Avoid leaving vitamin bottles out where little fingers can reach
them and risk overdosing.
Although supplementation is important, do not rely on supplements as a substitute for healthy foods! Your children still need
proper nutrition through food choices.

These reviews also concluded that continuous fetal monitoring is associated with a
high rate of false alarms and an increase in
caesarean sections, as well as forceps delivery and vacuum-assisted births. Mothers
subjected to continuous fetal monitoring
or 20-minute EFM strips every hour are
restricted in their natural labor and birth
movements and choices for pain management, such as walking or taking a bath.
These restrictions have been known to
lead to longer and more painful labors.
The 2012 review exposed that even
the standard 20-minute EFM strip upon
admission led to an increase in continuous
fetal monitoring, fetal blood sampling and
a whopping 20 percent increase in caesarean sections.

What supplements
should I take to
lower my blood
sugar?
By John Sowinski, R.Ph.
ne of the most common questions I get is, What supplement can I take to lower my blood sugars? It is important to know that diet is the No. 1 way to help control
those blood sugars. Please keep in mind that if you have type 1
diabetes, there are no supplements that will control your blood
sugar. While type 1 and type 2 diabetes are both problems with
blood sugar, and you can have both, they are treated differently.
In type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile onset diabetes, you no
longer make insulin and you need insulin injections to control
your blood sugar. In type 2 diabetes, you actually produce excess
insulin, but the insulin you produce doesnt control the blood
sugars well. This is because of insulin resistance. Your body resists
the action of that insulin.
So the start of the above scenario is to change your diet. My first
recommendation is to eliminate sugar and flour from your diet.
If you buy packaged food, look at the ingredients. If it contains
sugar or flour as an ingredient, dont eat it. Even some fruits can
be high in sugar. Examples of fruit with the highest sugar content
are cantaloupe, figs, kiwi, pineapple and watermelon. Apples and
berries are better choices.
So, my answer to the person looking for supplements is to first
address your diet. There are supplements that can support healthy
blood sugars, but if you dont change your diet, anything you do
including supplements and medications will not be effective
in the long run. Diabetes is a progressive disease. It will only get
worse over time if you dont change your diet.
Cinnamon contains polymers (complex molecules) that
prevent inactivation of insulin receptors, which results in insulin
resistance. They affect certain reactions regulating glucose metabolism. These polymers are antioxidants and increase insulindependent glucose metabolism by roughly 20 times. In a study

way the body leans, which way the head leans. Do they have problems
with speech? Do they have problems breathing?
This observation, coupled with a complete medical history, helps
both Dr. Twohig and his patient agree on the best course of action.
We look at the total body, see whats going on and ask how we can
make you healthier, Dr. Twohig says. Sometimes, it means certain dental
approaches will be delayed, as in the case with one patient who had
recently undergone radiation and chemotherapy. The man needed five
teeth extracted, but Dr. Twohig recognized that his patients body might
not be able to handle the additional stress so soon after the cancer-fighting treatments.
In other situations, a patients health issues or status might not require
a delay but a different approach to dental services. For example, individuals who are sensitive to certain compounds and materials might need
to undergo blood tests or other tests to check the biocompatibility of
materials that will be used in their fillings. In plain language, this means
testing will be done to make sure that a filling wont irritate a person or
cause health problems down the line.
Its a unique approach to dental care, but one that certainly resonates
with Dr. Twohigs patients some of whom travel upwards of 85 miles to
see him. Though he and his team do whatever they can to get patients in
earlier, his practices waiting list currently stands at four months.

earth to body.
The most wonderful attribute of natural ingredients is that, of
course, the bodys skin drinks it in with ease. After all, our skin is
perfectly natural, and the topical care and beauty aides we apply
should be perfectly natural as well, says Brotz. Emu oil, in particular, has an incredible healing effect thats visible. Its a powerful
moisturizer that evens the look and tone of skin by reducing inflammation and redness while prompting a noticeable difference in skin
texture. Its been used as an antiwrinkle treatment for years. Brotz
also notes, The great thing about natural ingredients, like emu oil,
is that it wont clog pores, which means it wont propagate yet more
skin irritation. Its simply soothing and healing.

Overall, the best forms of protein

whey isolate and whey hydrolysate. Both
of these forms are lower in lactose and fat

Be thankful

caregivers
By Sue Coyle
t this time of year when we typically focus on giving thanks for our
blessings, please take time to thank
anybody you know who may be a caregiver. A family caregiver could be anybody
who is unpaid and assists another person
with activities of daily living (ADLs) and/

from personal care, to housekeeping tasks,
to transportation, to medical management,
to general oversight.

Caregiving lasts an average of 4.6
years.
These statistics are staggering, and Im
very interested, and somewhat frightened,
to see the results of the 2014 study that
if any, and the physical, social, professional, health and emotional demands
can be extreme. Possibly a simple thank
you now to somebody else can pay it
forward for yourself in the future. Thus,
as we observe National Family Caregivers Month and Thanksgiving this month,
please be sure to thank anybody you know
for the care and assistance they provide to
another person; that simple acknowledgement just may make the tasks a bit more
fulfilling.

What to do
about
stress
By Early Fuller
Gluten-Free
Gourmet Fine Foods
The less sleep you get, the easier it is to feel stressed. There can be
the same effect with too much sleep. Spirituality is the hardest one to
keep intact in this day and age. We tend to forget what these holidays
are about and focus on the commercialism that goes on around us.
Stay true to what you believe. It can be hard sometimes, but when you
do, you will feel much better about yourself in the end.
There are many methods to relieve stress that can be very helpful.
They include breathing techniques, yoga, boot camps, stretching and many more. Your goal is to find the best method that fits
you and stick with it. What one must do is stay away from the
stress relievers that are unhealthy: drinking, drugs and any other
addiction. If you are unable to work through the stress in your life
during this time of year, find a friend to talk with: someone you feel
comfortable sharing with and who will listen. If the stress continues, seek professional help. You dont have to go through it alone.
Last but not least, Put a smile on your face, because no one
else can!

going to bed around the same time every night and waking
up about the same time every morning. Relax before going
to bed by reading a book or listening to music you find
soothing.
2. CUT DOWN ON CAFFEINE: A stimulant, caffeine can
keep you awake for 10 to 12 hours after consuming it. Try
cutting back on coffee or soda, especially after lunch.
3. NAP SMART: Keep your naps to about 30 minutes and try
to avoid them after about 2 p.m. While a short nap in the
late morning can heighten your senses and creativity the
rest of the day, long naps in the afternoon can actually make
insomnia worse.
4. EAT RIGHT AND EXERCISE: Avoid heavy, rich foods and
alcohol within several hours of bed, as they can decrease
your quality of sleep. Fatty foods negatively impact sleep, as
well. Also, exercising regularly for about 30 minutes a day
can enhance sleeping patterns and improve slow-wave sleep.
Sleep is important and developing a daily routine (for your waking
and sleeping hours) that helps you achieve a truly deep sleep is
critical. Should you experience persistent sleep problems or back
or muscle pain, a consultation with a family physician or a pain
management specialist is recommended.

By Stephanie Long, Doctor of Audiology
earing loss can dramatically affect the quality of interpersonal relationships. With hearing loss, people sometimes
mishear things. In my role as an audiologist, I often find
that couples argue about these misunderstandings. The person
with the hearing loss urges their spouse to stop talking from the
other room, to not turn away, and insists they must be mumbling.
Their partner feels that the person with the hearing loss is simply
not paying attention. So who is right?
Commonly, hearing changes occur slowly over time and couples
learn to accommodate one another. It is worth noting that even
small changes in hearing mean that what a person was able to hear
in the past will now present a challenge. For example, they now
have difficulty hearing their spouse from down the hall or while
he/she is busy with another activity. In addition to using hearing

dont talk with your mouth full. Talking while chewing gum or
eating makes hearing clearly much more difficult.
Use a normal conversational tone and let the hearing aids do the
work. In fact, since modern hearing aids are designed to detect
soft sounds, yelling can make the situation worse by making the
sound more distorted and too loud. If you do need to speak up,
do so without yelling; yelling distorts facial cues.

TO KNOW FOXXIE Fitness is to know its founder me
Dulcie Bosi-Schmidt.
Foxxie Fitness & Wellness LLC is a web-centered wellness
resource that was launched March of 2013, just weeks before my
first daughter was born. Some might ask: why then? With many of
the services provided online or by phone, it was the right time for
me to work from home and continue to do what I am so passionate
about: helping others to help themselves find their optimal wellness.
For that, there is no cookie-cutter approach. Each of my clients
(anyone seeking improvement or a better way) presents a unique
situation. As a registered nurse, I have extensive experience in
triage-fielding questions, asking the right questions to get more
information, and providing evidence-based assistance and advice.
I received my nursing degree at Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay and have serviced the greater Green Bay
area for 15 years.
At the heart of it all is wellness coaching. I received this certification in 2012 after an intensive 12-week course through Wellcoaches of America. As a certified wellness coach, I provide lifestyle consulting to assist individuals in achieving and maintaining optimal health. This includes but is not limited to physical
health (cardiovascular, weight and smoking status), mental and
emotional health (stress management, productivity).
In addition, I am a certified personal trainer through NESTA, a
smoking cessation counselor through the American Lung Association and a wellness enthusiast by nature. Foxxie Fitness provides
all of these avenues of health and wellness, allowing me to use
many skills and offer my clients the benefit of a well-rounded,
evidence-based program. With the diversity of the services
provided through this variety of credentials, well leave no stone
unturned when it comes to your wellness.
For the past five years and through present day, I continue to
gain experience and information in wellness while working with a
local health care organization. I enjoy working with area employers and their employees on a one-on-one basis, helping them to
overcome barriers and find a happier, healthier, more sustainable
way of life. I wanted to be able to reach more people and in more
ways to meet the diverse needs of the individual. Its wonderful

of which offer a bright

spring to enjoy a romantic meal on the lovely patio area just outside
the atrium.
The team at Gather is friendly and talented, to say the least. These
people know their stuff, and theyre happy to share the restaurants
passion for good food and a good cause with their diners. What
amazed us most during our visit was the staff s knowledge of the
food and what flavors and dishes worked best with one another.
If complementary pairings are a science, each member of the staff
from the owner to the chef to the servers has a Ph.D. Their
suggestions made a great meal extraordinary.

part of your

By Rebecca Beringer, Classical Homeopath
homeopathic care.
Homeopathic remedies are made at special U.S. Food and Drug
Administration-regulated and approved homeopathic pharmacies according to very high standards of purity. The substances
are prepared by a process of repeated dilution and shaking, which
makes them capable of stimulating the healing process. Remedies
are given to stimulate the whole body to heal itself, while by contrast
herbs and modern medicines are given to take away specific symptoms from parts of the body.
A common misconception is that homeopathy is not scientifically tested. This is a false belief: Hahnemanns discoveries began
through scientific inquiry and in his lifetime he researched, created,
tested and catalogued data on 99 remedies. Homeopaths have
added to his research over the past 200 years through researching,
testing, using and cataloguing information on the remedies. Now,
in our modern era, specific laboratory and trial data are also being
conducted to add to this historical research. Today, several thousand remedies make up the homeopathic Materia medica.
The beauty of homeopathy also exists in how easy it is to attain
and learn how to use. Homeopathic remedies are readily available
to collect and keep on hand for issues of concern. Due to their
gentle nature, they are safe to use for all ages: including infants and
pregnant women (with the permission of their doctors). Additionally, consultation is available through highly trained homeopathic
specialists. Look for a consultant who has attended a specific training program for homeopathy and who has had to gain experience
in a clinical setting.
Homeopathy is a wonderful choice for anyone looking to build
strength and vitality in his or her health and wellness. If it is not part
of your wellness plan, get started today!
Rebecca Beringer is a classical homeopath with over five years of
experience working with men, women and children of all ages.
Her practice serves clients all over northeast Wisconsin and the
broader U.S. Her practice is based in Appleton, inside Alternatives
Holistic Health and Wellness Center. She is a graduate of the highly
respected Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
