Were building business on the Gold Coast, with our new $35 million
facility set to be ready for students from 2014. The building will

What youll study
At Griffith, you can choose Business Plus and combine your studies in
business with another area thats important to you. Studying business with a
personal interest area gives you the opportunity to create the type of career

Fast-track option
You can fast-track your business degree and be ready for the job market
sooner. You can complete this degree within two years if you study over
three trimesters at Logan (run from February to November), or undertake
the fast-track option at Nathan. The fast-track option at Nathan means
you complete five courses during Semesters 1 and 2, with an additional
two courses during the Summer Semester.

EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS
Youll learn about employment law, labour market issues, wage and payment
systems, and occupational health and safety. Youll also learn how to
manage the complex relationships between employers and employees.
Career opportunities
Youll be able to work as an employment relations manager or consultant, or in
roles dealing with workplace planning and policy, managerial strategy, industrial
advocacy, occupational health and safety, and workplace negotiation.
Business and Government degrees
HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Human resource management professionals work closely with people to
help them with their careers. In this major, youll learn about selection and
recruitment procedures, staff training, development and performance
management, and organisational change.
Youll be able to work as a human resource manager or consultant. Human
resource professionals work in many sectors including business management,
counselling, workforce planning and policy, and recruiting and training staff.
INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT
Youll develop the knowledge and skills youll need to work across national
boundaries and cultures. Youll learn the art of international negotiation,
how to develop corporate global strategy, and how to manage global
business logistics. Youll also develop the skills needed to resolve ethical
dilemmas in international management.
Youll be prepared for a management career with a multinational firm,
international trade and investment organisation, or in the public and private
sectors as a policy advisor, international project officer, international
strategy or business manager, or international negotiator.
LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY NETWORK MANAGEMENT
Logistics and supply network management plays a crucial role in business.
In this major, youll learn how to source the best materials for the best
price, develop good relationships with suppliers and customers, monitor
the movement and storage of raw materials, maintain inventories of
stock and track goods from their point of origin to the final customer.
Youll be able to work as a logistics and supply network manager,
purchasing manager, business or strategy manager, or export and import
operations manager.
BUSINESS CONT.
MANAGEMENT
Youll learn about managements core functionscommunication, planning,
teamwork, strategy, human resources and self-development. Youll develop
analytical, communication and decision making skills.
Good managers are needed across all sectors, and in businesses of all sizes.
With this qualification, you can apply your business management knowledge
to an area of personal interest, and find work in roles as a business manager,
in human resources, strategy, planning and policy, and training and
development.
MARKETING
If youre creative, analytical, a good communicator and a quick thinker,
marketing is a great career for you. In this major, youll learn about
identifying and understanding a market and staying ahead of competitors.
Youll be able to work in any industry or organisation that needs to promote
its products or services, from entertainment and fashion, to tourism,
advertising, public relations, or business consulting. You might work as a
brand manager, marketing manager, advertising account manager, market
research analyst, public relations manager, or sales manager.
SUSTAINABLE ENTERPRISE
Youll develop the analytical, communication and decision making skills to
manage an organisations impact on environmental and social issues. Youll
learn about corporate social responsibility, sustainable business practices,
and the impact these issues have on a businesss finances.
Increasingly, public and private sector organisations are hiring sustainability
and corporate social responsibility specialists to their teams. As this field
continues to grow, youll find more and more career opportunities in a wide
variety of organisations.

What youll study
Youll gain the technical skills and knowledge to pursue a career in
accounting, financial planning, finance or economics. In your first year,
youll explore the core skills and concepts of commerce including
accounting, economics, business statistics, and management. In your
second and third years, youll build on this knowledge with your chosen
major. Youll focus your studies in an area that most interests you and
will help you achieve your career goals.

If you have a sharp mind, an eye for detail, and enjoy number crunching,
accounting could be your career. Accountants are critical to ensuring the
financial viability of every business, government department, not-for-profit
organisation and sporting or social club. In this major, youll study areas such
as corporate finance, strategic management accounting and company law.
Youll be equipped for a career in a range of private or public sector
organisations where you could work in areas such as accounting,
administration, auditing, business management, commercial and taxation
law, managerial accounting and taxation.
ECONOMICS
If you have you ever wondered why the Australian dollar fluctuates or what
caused the global financial crisis, this major will suit you. Youll gain insights
into the big issues facing societies and learn how governments make
decisions about what to spend on complex issues such as the environment,
health care, infrastructure and resources. Youll also learn how markets
work, and how businesses decide about pricing, staffing and responding
to competition.
Youll be prepared for work in the banking and finance industry as an analyst
or advisor, in property development or real estate, in government policy
in fields such as the environment, health, education and transport, or in
large mining companies analysing markets and investment opportunities.
You may also find career opportunities in major international organisations
such as the World Bank, the United Nations, the OECD and the Asian

FINANCE
The finance industry is a global industry, and goes way beyond handling
money and balancing accounts. This major will help you understand how

If youre interested in wealth creation and want to learn how to make

requirement of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission
and to be eligible for admission into the Financial Planning Association
of Australia, allowing you to qualify as a certified financial planner.

Youll learn whats involved in making hotels run smoothly. Youll develop

Youll be prepared for a management career with international hotel
and resort groups, restaurants, entertainment and leisure providers,

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM MANAGEMENT
Youll gain an in-depth understanding of tourism management, including

You can also complete the REIQ licence as an elective, entitling you to own

that you need to study your choice of

as those who left school some time ago.
Youll study the same courses as our degree
students part-time, usually for one year,
to experience the university environment.

certicate, youll receive a special boosted
Rank that can be used for entry into a
Grifth degree, and where relevant,

QUEENSLAND INSTITUTE OF
BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY
If you havent achieved the OP or Rank
you were expecting, missed out on the
degree of your choice, or are looking for
alternative ways to get into university, you
might consider completing a diploma at
the Queensland Institute of Business and
Technology (QIBT).
QIBT, located at the Mt Gravatt and
Gold Coast campuses, offers diplomas
that include courses of a comparable
nature to some of our bachelor degrees.
After successfully completing the diploma,
you are able to enter the related Grifth
University bachelors degree and complete
within an additional two or three years.
QIBT is an accredited higher education
provider, which provides eligible students
access to the Australian Government loan
scheme, FEE-HELP, to pay tuition fees.

The Uni-Start scheme gives school-
leavers and non school-leavers who are

OPEN UNIVERSITIES AUSTRALIA
In conjunction with Open Universities
Australia (OUA), we offer distance studies
in arts, business, communication, and
criminology and criminal justice. OUA entry
requirements enable anyone to study a
degree, while offering greater exibility
in structure through the wide range of
courses available.
We also offer Commonwealth supported
places (CSP) through OUA under the
Bachelors of Arts, Business, Communication,
and Criminology and Criminal Justice. After
completing and passing four OUA courses or
equivalent (with a GPA of at least 4.0) that
contribute towards the degree requirements,
you can apply for a CSP place.
OUA students have the option to complete
shorter qualications at certicate and
diploma level or complete individual subjects
from any of the OUA institutions. With four
enrolment entry points, OUA gives you
greater exibility to plan an individual study
routine or fast track your degree.

Youll be granted credit towards your
degree for approved prior learning for
relevant studies (or other demonstrated
learning achievement) completed in the

DEFERMENT
We offer deferment for most of our
degrees. This allows you to delay the
start of your studies for one year, while
still securing your offer. Deferment is not
available for degrees that involve specic
selection criteriasuch as music and oral
health (dentistry). If you are unable to take
up your place in one of these degrees,
you must reapply in the following year.
You can request to defer after you receive
an offer. For QTAC, you can select the
deferment option when you respond to
your QTAC offer. For UAC, you can email
deferred@grifth.edu.au to request
deferment. For both QTAC and UAC,
approval of deferment is automatic for
approved degrees and will be conrmed
by the University.
TRANSFER
New students have the option to transfer
from one degree to another, before the
start of the next semester. This gives you
the opportunity to start your studies in
one degree and then transfer to another of
your choiceas long as you meet the entry
requirements for the new degree. We also
offer mid-year transfers to some degrees.

WHAT WILL MY
STUDY COST?
Most Australian students who are studying undergraduate degrees are recognised
as Commonwealth supported students. This means you pay a student contribution
each semester and the majority of the cost of your education is met by the
Australian Government.
The student contribution charge for each course (subject) varies depending on
the discipline area (Band) in which the course belongs. The table below shows the
annual charge for full-time students in 2013. In some degrees, you may study courses
from more than one band, so your fees could vary. Part-time study reduces the
gures proportionally.

To be eligible to apply for the GSC, you will
need to be recognised as an elite athlete by
the Australian Institute of Sport and Grifth

If youre an elite athlete, taking on big challenges will be second nature, although it can still be tough
to balance your elite sporting career with the need to secure your future through university study.

Bachelor of Business graduate and Olympic gold medallist Sara

with Grifth University, Duncan won an Olympic
Bronze Medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. In
2008, at his 4th Olympics, Duncan won a Gold
Medal with partner Drew Ginn in the coxless pair.

As an undergraduate student, youll have

ISLANDER STUDENTS
We offer dedicated support for Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander students through
the GUMURRII Student Support Unit.
Staffed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islanders, GUMURRII provides cultural,
academic and personal support for students
to achieve success. Services include a direct
entry program, help with enrolment, the
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tutorial
assistance scheme orientation and the
Hands Up! Tertiary Preparation Program.
GUMURRII also provides a social meeting
place for students, staff and community.

People from diverse faith, religious and

the Multi-Faith Centre on the Nathan
campus. The Centre promotes respect and

education, research and advocacy in inter-
faith dialogue towards a culture of peace in
local, national and global contexts. Prayer

Campus
The location where you undertake classes
for your studies. Grifth University has
ve campusesthe Gold Coast, Logan,
Mt Gravatt, Nathan and South Bank.
Commonwealth supported student
A domestic student who is studying in
a Commonwealth supported place. The
student pays a contribution towards the
cost of their education with the balance
funded by the Australian Government.
Contact hours
The number of hours you are expected
to attend classes, for example, lectures,
tutorials and workshops.
Continuing education certicate programs
Consist of selected courses from degrees
that are suitable to upgrade your tertiary
entry rank or for personal or vocational
development.
Course
Formerly known as a subject, this is a unit
of study normally undertaken over one
semester, for which a grade is given.
Credit point
Unit of value that gives the weighting
of a course towards the requirements
of an academic program.
Credit for prior study
If youve partially or fully completed
studies at another institution, you may
be eligible to receive credit towards your
Grifth University degree and not have to
repeat subjects or courses that you have
successfully completed elsewhere.
Cut-off
The Rank, OP or ATAR at which entry
to an academic program cuts off in a
particular year.
A
Academic program
A program of study, over a period of time,
that leads to an award of the University.
Academic transcript
A students ofcial record of all programs
and all courses (subjects) attempted and the
grade obtained for each course.
AQF (Australian Qualications Framework)
The AQF is the national policy for regulated
qualications in Australian education and
training.
ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank)
A number from 99.95 to 0 with increments
of 0.05 that provides a measure of a
students overall academic achievement.
This measure is used by all Australian states,
except Queensland, which uses OP/Rank.
Austudy
Commonwealth Government income
support for full-time students aged
25 years or over, who meet Centrelink
eligibility requirements.
B
Bachelors degree
The rst level of study you undertake at
university as an undergraduate student;
for example, Bachelor of Science.
Bridging and preparatory courses
Courses that prepare you for university
study and/or allow you to pick up the
prerequisites you need to be admitted
to a degree program.
D
Degree
An academic program undertaken at
university, such as a Bachelor of Business.
Disciplines
Term used for offerings within a study area
at Grifth. For example, Special Education is
a discipline within the Education study area,
and Nursing is a discipline under Health.
Double degrees
Studying two degrees at the same time.
This allows you to study more than one area
and be awarded two qualications in less
time than completing the degrees separately
one after the other.

Electives
Courses that you can elect to study from
either specic study areas or general areas
of interest, depending on your degree
requirements.
F
FEE-HELP
The Australian Government loan scheme to
enable eligible domestic fee-paying students
(undergraduate and postgraduate) to defer
payment of their tuition fees.
Folio
A collection of your personal artistic work
required to be submitted for assessment
to gain admission to some of the visual and
performing arts programs.
Full-time study
Enrolment in courses totalling at least 75
per cent of a standard full-time load in any
semester. In most academic programs, this
means 30 credit points (normally three
courses) or more.

GPA is a numerical index used to summarise
a students academic performance in a
single teaching period, over a specied

the duration of a students enrolment. GPAs
at Grifth are calculated on a 7.0 scale.

HECS-HELP
This is the Australian Government loan
scheme to enable eligible Commonwealth
supported students to defer payment of
their Student Contribution Charge.
HELP
Higher Education Loan Program.

Mature age student
A student who is 21 years or older.
Mid-year admission
Some degrees can be started in Semester 1
or Semester 2. If you are starting a degree
in Semester 2, this is referred to as mid-year
admission.

Non-Award
Miscellaneous individual course (subject)
that does not proceed towards a degree.
O
OS-HELP
Overseas Higher Education Loan Program.
This is the Australian Government loan,
which supports offshore study of eligible
domestic students.
OP (Overall position)
A number (1 to 25) that indicates a Year 12
students state-wide rank-order position,
based on overall achievement in Board
subjects.
P
Part-time study
Enrolment in courses totalling less than 75
per cent of a standard full-time load in any
semester. A course enrolment load of less
than 30 credit points constitutes part-time
attendance (normally two courses).
Postgraduate study
Further university study usually undertaken
after completion of an undergraduate
degree; for example, Master of Pharmacy.
Prerequisites
Requirements, apart from OP, Rank or ATAR,
that you must complete to gain admission
to a university program. These are usually
expressed as achievements in particular
Year 11 and Year 12 subjects; for example in
Queensland, English (4 Sound Achievement).
Program
A program is an approved course of study
leading to an award of the University.
A student is admitted to a program, and
on successful completion of all program
requirements is awarded the degree, diploma
or certicate to which the program relates.

QTAC (Queensland Tertiary
Admissions Centre)
Admissions centre that receives and
processes all undergraduate degree
applications for universities in Queensland
and Northern New South Wales,
all Queensland TAFE institutes, the
Endeavour College of Natural Health,
the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania,
Christian Heritage College, QANTM,
and the Queensland Institute of Business
and Technology.
QTAC preferences
The university programs listed in order
of preference from 1 to 6 on your

Rank
Tertiary entry rank assigned to students

UAC (Universities Admissions Centre)
Admissions centre that receives and
