SRUC A Unique Institution

On 1
st
October 2012, four respected institutions Barony, Elmwood and Oatridge Colleges and SAC
(Scottish Agricultural College) merged to become SRUC Scotlands Rural College.

SRUC will deliver comprehensive skills, education and business support for the land-based industries
in Scotland and beyond, founded on world class and sector-leading research, education and
consultancy. SRUC is one of the largest organisations of its kind in Europe. Our aim is to build a
culture of excellence through the development of a Rural University College. We offer courses from
entry level and access courses, through Higher National (HNC/HND) and degree programmes, to
Masters and PhD level study.

SRUC has 6 campuses: at Kings Buildings in Edinburgh, Craibstone in Aberdeen, Riverside in Ayr,
Elmwood in Cupar, Oatridge in Broxburn, and Barony in Dumfries. We offer over 270 rural-related
educational courses including training and short courses, certificates and access courses, as well as
full-time and part-time courses at university-level and postgraduate.

To be validated: The BSc/BSc (Hons) Applied Bioscience degree will be re-launched as a new
course, entitled BSc/BSc (Hons) Applied Animal and Plant Science for 2014. This course will
continue to run at the Ayr campus. The HND Applied Bioscience will be unaffected by this change.

Why Study Applied Bioscience at SRUC?

Applied Bioscience is about using our understanding of biological systems to improve the
environment, produce better food and provide renewable sources of essential raw materials. It is
about employing natures diversity to produce a vast range of chemicals for use in drug manufacture,
food preparation and industrial processes. It is also about applying our knowledge of diseases to
improve the health of crops and livestock and using our understanding of animal behaviour to raise
livestock welfare standards.
With todays rapid advancements in biological knowledge and techniques, career opportunities for
graduates of this course are excellent.

Methods of Delivery and Assessment

Laboratory classes develop practical skills to complement the theoretical aspects of the course,
which are delivered using a mixture of lectures, seminars, computing sessions and group
discussions. The Applied Bioscience programme has good links with industry and strong emphasis
is placed on industrial and farm visits to reinforce the relevance of the topics studied. Modules are
assessed using a combination of coursework and written examinations.
Career Prospects

Previous graduates have secured positions that include:

Veterinary Research Assistants (scrapie & BSE)
Animal Health and Welfare Officers
Research Assistants (genetics & animal reproduction)
Production Controller
Diagnostics Consultant
Plant Pathologist
Plant Breeder
Experimental Weed Biologist
Field Technician (ecology and epidemiology)

SRUCs graduate employment rate is 92%

Student Profile

Kerry Conner initially enrolled for an HND with SRUC in 1999. Having passed the HND with
Distinction in 2001 she progressed onto the third year of the degree course, and in 2003 graduated
with a BSc (Hons) in Applied Bioscience (Animal Science). For her Honours research project, Kerry
investigated the commercial viability of early lambing with an SRUC vet as her supervisor. Kerry is
now working as an Animal Health and Welfare Inspector for the Veterinary Service within the
Department of Agriculture and Rural Development for Northern Ireland (DARDNI).

I chose SRUC because of its excellent reputation, fantastic resources and enthusiastic staff. I
particularly enjoyed the diversity of the course content, with an optimal balance between practical
and theoretical classes that prepared me well for employment.

When she left school, Senga Kyle first worked as a darkroom technician in a local hospital. Later,
when she was a mother of two young children, her interest in science led her to enrol with SRUC,
first for the HND and then for the degree. Senga specialised in plant science throughout her studies
and in her final year pursued her interest in aromatic oils with a research project involving DNA
fingerprinting of basil varieties. After graduating with a First Class Honours degree, Senga
completed a PhD in phytochemistry with SRUC and is now working as a Research Assistant with the
Wellcome Research Trust at the University of Dundee.

The laboratory practicals gave me plenty of valuable hands-on experience, and the lecturers are
very approachable and willing to answer questions.
