Looking Ahead...
TheExpectedMinistry
IcametoPapuaNewGuinea(PNG)inordertoteachmathsothat
Wycliffetranslatorsandothermissionariescanfocusontheirown
ministrieswithouthavingtosacri=icetheirchildrenseducation.
TheUnexpectedMinistry
Simplyteachingmathhasturnedintoaministryofcaringfor
teenswhohavebeenuprootedfromtheirhomecountryin
orderthatGodskingdomandWordmightbebroughttothe
farcornersofthiscountry.Thatisalotforsomekidstoprocess.
TheNeed
WhenIleaveinJune,theschoolwillonlybeleftwithONEfull
timemathteacher,possiblytwoifanothernewmissionaryisable
togethereintime.Theyareadjustingthemathscheduleandmakingitwork,
butitisonlyatemporarysolution.ThisiswhyitissoimportantthatIreturninJanuary2015
forthesecondsemesteroftheschoolyear.

TheHumbleAskim
HereinPNG,anaskim(askeem)isthewordusedwhenyouaskanotherpersonforhelp.Now,ifyou
knowme,youknowIdontlikeaskingforhelp.IfIcandoitonmyownIusuallywill.Idontwanttobea
bother.ButtheLordisbreakingdownmyprideandnomatterwhatangleyoutakethereisonlyonereality:
IcannotreturntothisimportantministryinPNGbymyself.NomatterhowfrugalIam,nomatterhow
muchIsave.Icantdoitonmyown.
AndImnotmeantto.
OneofthethingsIhavelearnedinmytwoyearsinPNGisthattheChristiancommunityisntacommunityif
wearenthelpingeachother.Bearingoneanothersburdenstakesonnewmeaningwhenyoure8,000
milesawayfromfamilyandfriends.Ukarumpaisntjustaministryofthe500+peoplewholiveoncenter.It
isaministryoftensofthousandsofpeoplewhohaveneverseenUkarumpa,butarepartofwhathappens
herethroughtheirprayersand=inancialgifts.TheresultisthatGodsKingdomisfurthered.
So,myaskimissimple:Willyouconsider=inanciallyorprayerfullypartneringwithmeinmyministry
hereinPapuaNewGuinea?Icantgetbackhereonmyown.Buttogether,wecancontinuetostrengthen
whatGodisdoinghereinPNG.

The Big Picture...

Teaching:WithoutUkarumpaInternationalSchool(UIS),manyparents
wouldbeforcedtohomeschool,takingawaytimefromtheirown
translationworkorsupportwork.Backin2011,whenIsawthe
desperateneedformathteachersatUIS,IknewIcould=illthisneedand
helpsupportthetranslationoftheBiblehereinPapuaNewGuinea.

Choir:Whenour=illinchoirteacherneededtomake
anemergencytripbacktotheStates,Iwasableto
stepin,thusbecomingthe=illinonceremoved,so
thatthekidswouldbeabletohavetheirChristmas
choirconcertandnothavetocancelit.

Spanish:ThisyearIhavebeenabletousesomeofmyrandom
knowledgetohelptheschoolinareasoutsideofmath.OurSpanishI
andIIteacherwentonfurlough,soanothermathteacherandI
steppedinandusedourSpanishknowledgetocoverthoseclasses.
Theschooloftenpullsfromcommunitymembersandtheirtalentsto
coverclasses,butwhenacerti=iedteachercantakeonaclassit
makestheprocessmucheasierfortheclassandtheadministration.

Coaching:Studentsherearegiventheopportunitytoplayextra
curricularsportsandparticipateintournamentswithnational
(PNG)schoolsandothermissionaryschools.Thisisonlypossible
whenteachersandmembersofthecommunityvolunteerto
coach.Forthepasttwoyears,Ihavehelpedcoachgirlssoftball
andbasketballandhavebeentheheadcoachforvolleyball.

Band:UISofferstheopportunityforstudentstobeapartofasymphonic
band.Lastyear,whenfourofthepercussionistsgraduatedorwenton
furlough,thepercussionsectionwasleftwithoneperson,sotheband
directoraskedifIcouldhelpoutinthesection.Neverhavingbeenin
bandbeforeIofcoursesaidyes.Ihavebeenabletoconnectwiththe
studentsandforgeadifferentkindofrelationshipwiththeminthisrole
thatIwouldnttradeforanything.
