Course title

C. Course Description:
The course is designed to give students ample practice in developing and writing good sentences
and different types of paragraphs. With regard to good sentence writing, each unit directs
students attention to a grammar issue that is related to the kind of writing being practiced

Learning Outcomes
Upon the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
compose good sentences and avoid common mistakes related to sentence structures and
punctuation;
work together and share ideas through collaborative activities;
edit the texts in writing assignments;
write under time pressure; and
employ the writing process to produce a complete paragraph with unity and coherence.

F. Instructional Modes:

Theory and practice are tightly integrated.

Students are required to do exercises in pairs/groups after grasping the theory. Especially,
during the process of practicing writing paragraphs, students are organized to carry out peer
editing in which they exchange each others composed paragraph for mutual commenting and
correcting.
Visual aids (PowerPoint) are used to illustrate the teaching points, supplying students with
more teaching materials to support the teaching-learning process.
Home assignments are given to students at the end of each class, and correction will be made
in the next class.
Continuous practicing writing paragraphs together with recognizing and correcting mistakes
is conducted through out the course.

H. Assessment Methods (Requirements for Completion of the Course):

1. Description of learning outcomes assessment

Students assessment is based on:
1. Quizzes (10%)
4 ten-minute-quizzes on sentence skills such as sentence errors, punctuation,
capitalization, sentence structure and elements of paragraph will be given over the course of
semester. Quizzes will relate to materials learned. There will be no make-up quizzes.
2. Writing Assignments (30%)
Your assignment grades will be the average score of the 5 writing assignments including 3
homework writing assignments that you turn in to the instructor and 2 timed writings (from
the textbook) you do in class. For homework writing assignments, students are required to
write 3 writing assignments including 1 creative writing (a poem, a song or an ending
paragraph of a story) and 2 paragraph writings. For timed writings, students are required to
do 2 timed writings (from the textbook) in class. All writing is due on the day stated. NO
LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
3. Midterm Test (20%)
The Midterm test will be an in-class exam. It will test sentence skills and paragraph writing
skills.
4. Final Test (40%)
The final exam will be administered by the academic registrars office. It will test sentence
skills and paragraph writing skills.
Note on Quizzes and Assignments and Midterm
There will be no make-up quizzes or extensions to assignments. However, students will be
given a possibility of raising their scores by being offered an extra quiz and an extra writing
assignment at the end of the semester. These grades can be used to replace A LOW SCORE or
A SCORE OF ZERO (0) because of an absence.
Note to Instructor:
At the first class meeting, a set of copies of Supplementary Materials on Grammar will be
delivered to one student who will have it photocopied for students in class. The copies of
Supplementary Materials on Grammar will be distributed at the second class meeting at
students expenses.
HSU Writing Center
The Writing Center provides One-on-One tutoring consultations free of charge for students at
Hoa Sen University. Undergraduate students in writing courses receive priority for tutoring
appointments. The Writing Center serves as a resource for writers, providing tutoring sessions
on the range of activities in the writing process considering the audience, analyzing the
assignment or genre, brainstorming, researching, writing drafts, revising, editing, and preparing
documentation and helping students with grammar structures and styles in improving writing
skill.
Instructors require weak students to attend the Writing Center to receive tutoring on a specific
assignment, skill, or aspect of the writing process. Instructors may also require individual
students to attend the Writing Center to receive instruction in grammar and mechanics.
