The keys to quality

Dar Al-Handasah is unique as a leading international consultancy

engineering are at

originating in the Middle East. In recent years the DAR Group of Consulting

Dar Al-Handasah

Firms has expanded rapidly throughout Africa, Europe, North America and the
Far East.
Dar Al-Handasah Group offers clients a staff of over 4,000, including
about 2,000 who are professionally qualified, in 50 offices throughout the world.
The DAR Group offers a comprehensive range of services to both client-owners
and contractors, covering:

Project feasibility studies

Detailed design

Contract documentation

Construction supervision

Consultancy to contractors on design and construction.

Within the Dar Al-Handasah Group, Bridges and Special Structures is

responsible for design of bridges and viaducts of all types, large roofs and other
special-use structures. Our structures often stretch the conventional limits of
architecture and civil engineering. Yet our designs are always highly efficient,
technically innovative and easily built, with great economy achieved in
construction.
The interplay of departmental activities assures the full
resources of the Dar Al-Handasah Group are utilized on major projects,
while individual departments maintain the advantage of operating
independently or in small groups of select engineers.
Dar Al-Handasah invites you to explore further how Bridges and
Special Structures can assist you with your engineering design projects.

success at
Dar Al-Handasah

Foremost among the keys to quality engineering is our emphasis on

people - individuals of talent, creativity and technical competence - selected
for each specific project. Each new project is assigned to a Senior Design
Engineer who directs the design form concept to construction. It is the
responsibility of the designer not only to derive a
concept by which the need of the client can be
fulfilled, but also to oversee the realization of the
structure: to bring the concept into reality.

page three

The success of the design is assured by

analysis and detailed design undertaken by engineering
staff drawn from among the extensive support facilities
of the Dar Al-Handasah Group. All engineers are equipped
with the most advanced computer facilities to perform
state-of-the-art design and analysis applicable to every
project.
Excellence in engineering also involves the
sound application of principles from highly diverse areas,
ranging from aesthetics to social attitudes of the users
of the structures, throughout the design process.
An

understanding

and

development

of

appropriate construction techniques is central to our

approach to design. Every foreseeable problem, down to the smallest detail, is
resolved by the designer at the drawing board. As the design moves on to site,
collaboration and mutual support are developed between designer and
contractor. As a matter of policy, contractors are provided with a fully thoughtout building methodology.
Using the creativity
and imagination of
designers and the
skills of contractors
involved, the
designs of our
structures have
been realized as
works of inherent
beauty as in the

Saudi Arabia.

Concept design is

Design begins by discovering the right concept by which a need

the prerequisite

expressed by a client is fulfilled efficiently and economically. That concept

to producing

emerges as a single image of what is most appropriate and easily built for the

structures of

location. This first step of concept design is usually made by an individual who

superior quality

establishes and guides the direction of the design.

All Bridge and Special Structures projects are headed by senior
engineers of well-established reputation for creativity, innovative contributions
to the profession and records of sound engineering practice.
In concept design the project is conceived in its entirety. All factors
that will affect the construction of the finished structure and its use are

The concept design for the Bahrain Causeway Bridge, based on the
image of sails typical of local boats, resolved diverse locational
requirements:

Thematic integration into adjacent marina and estuary

development.

100m main span and 50m side-span navigation channel

clearances.

Low tower clearances for nearby airport air traffic.

Protection of cables in a highly corrosive environment.

Fast-track construction.

Design of lighting, location of utilities, and

texturing of walls for beauty as well as to
reduce noise pollution are part of the total
concept design of the Diwan Underpass,
Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia,

span of 400m with
190m balancing
spans and a 35m
wide deck.

Once the right concept for the location emerges, it is refined in detail,
confirmed by calculation and tested by the design team. Although DAR
engineers make extensive use of the most advanced available computing
capabilities, these are never used as substitutes for the intuition and
imagination of our professional staff. Analysis is only as accurate as the
assumptions on which it is performed.

The key to the

A structure is a response to a need in a specific location. While the

concept lies in the

concept to fulfil that need may correspond to a familiar structural type, no

location itself

particular type is imposed on the location. What is appropriate and right should
be determined by the response of the designer to the unique characteristics of
each location.
Special Structures designers have demonstrated that a design that
derives from the actual conditions prevailing at each specific location
consistently prove to be the most cost-effective as well as the most elegant
solution.
Two reservoirs at Muna, Saudi Arabia,
illustrate how the same need - a covered
storage reservoir to provide large volumes of
water to supply pilgrims to the Holy places is met by structures of very different form,
materials and construction. Both designs
simplified

circumstances of its location.

Sometimes the informing image requires an imaginative leap, a total

redefinition of the design problem, to reveal hidden inherent opportunities.
One of the largest cable-stayed concrete shell roofs in the world, 365
meters in diameter, covers the 1 million cubic metre circular reservoir. The
concept is based on the inherent stiffness of a ring of A frames from which
radial in-situ beams were stayed by cables. These were capped by a run of
precast barrel vault shells, acting integrally with the beams, to form a strong
and efficient structure.

To simplify construction, special falsework

was designed to travel around the
circumference on a temporary track.

Outstanding concept
designs often
transcend the
location and
function which
inspired them. This
large-roof concept
might easily be
transformed into an
arena or sports
stadium.

function, as well as its aesthetic functions,

efficiently and effectively. In efficient structures,
redundancy is achieved by creativity and ingenuity
in design and the elimination of materials that do
no work. Thus, efficient structural forms often
have strong aesthetic appeal as well as economy
in materials.
The Al-Khaleej Viaduct in Riyadh, Saudi
Arabia, demonstrates the aesthetic appeal of
appropriate, highly efficient structural forms that
also efficiently fulfil functional needs.

Lighting,

finish details were
developed as part of
the concept design
so the structure
could be easily

achieved by
efficiency in both
design and
construction.

The Al-Khaleej interchange is one of the busiest intersections in the

city and an ideal location for a gateway into downtown Riyadh. Space for a
conventional cloverleaf intersection was lacking and important surrounding
buildings required due deference to their status.
The design combines an oversailing arch with the simultaneous
opening up of the sunken Airport Road in the form of a terraced bowl under the
main span to create a sense of arrival and occasion while efficiently
transferring traffic in all directions.
Continuously varying soffit geometry, with a high quality finish,
provides much of the architectural elegance of the structure. Abutments were
integrated into the viaduct. Cross-sections for the concrete deck were
developed to be structurally efficient, readily constructed and able to adjust to
varying depths and curvature in plan without difficulty.

Aesthetics

Aesthetic considerations must guide the design

in design

from concept to completion. Every project provides its own

guidelines for the designer to produce a structure that is

environment

able to enhance the quality of life of its users.

The interaction of a new structure with the
existing environment often influences the concept selected
for final design. Details of character and finishes of the
structures to fulfil the appropriate aesthetic functions become part of the
concept design. By attending to these finish details in the concept stage,
provisions are made for easily building them into the structure without
additional cost.

Once in place, the new structure becomes part of the

environment and will significantly affect those living near
it for its design life. The Sharafiah Viaduct in Jeddah, Saudi
Arabia, was designed to provide space for a shopping
arcade, as well as shaded walkways beneath the elevated
roadway of the structure. The decorative arches blend the
viaduct into the local architecture to provide aesthetic
enhancement of the environment for both pedestrian as
well as vehicular users.

the high level of aesthetic detail that can be achieved when

the refinement level of the finished structure is considered throughout the
concept design.
Simple methods of construction were devised to minimize possible
delays and to reduce the need for highly specialized equipment. Balanced
cantilever construction of precast concrete segments assured high quality as
well as maximum safety during erection. Contrasting finishes were used for
twin-leaf curved piers, underside of the soffit and precast cantilevering wings
which carry the dual carriageway deck of this beautiful structure.

The concept design of the Al-Salaam Underpass in Madinah,

Saudi Arabia, incorporates beautifully detailed and highly
absorptive soundwalls. The structural walls are precast to
provide economy in construction.

Constructibility

A thorough understanding of the construction technology by which the

structure is to be built guides Special Structures designs at every stage.

to economy

Economy is related less to the quantity and cost of materials used in a design
than to the way the design is to be built and the effort required to maintain it
once it is built.
The Jeddah - Makkah elevated expressway is an excellent example of
how DARs Special Structures achieves great economy by attention to
construction issues in the concept design. This beautiful 12-km urban
expressway was economically built using precast concrete segments with only
65 m of formwork for the superstructure.
Economy was achieved by simplifying the

page thirteen

Economy is further achieved when the completed

structure serves its functions well with minimal maintenance
or repair throughout its design life. These true economies are
more difficult to demonstrate than adding up costs of
materials, yet the savings produced in the construction and
maintenance of a structure usually far exceed differences in
costs of quantities.
Standard piers were conceived as elegant forms each
making a transition from a superellipse at the top to a circle
at the base. A cleanly executed ribbed finish was obtained
through the casting of over 500 single piers, using a mould of
fabricated stainless steel. The assembly and deshuttering
arrangements were precisely engineered for speed of construction and to avoid
damage to the ribs during form striking.
Final proposals presented to the contractor included
details of carriage, transportation, casting and
segment assembly. These construction details,
worked out in the concept design, produced great
economy through simple and rapid construction,
maximization of manpower, and minimal formwork
costs.

Technical innovation

Technical innovation evolves as a natural part of every design project

construction, to reduce maintenance requirements, to satisfy the unique

requirements of the location or function. Technical innovation by creative and
highly talented individuals keeps DARs Bridges and Special Structures on the
leading edge of the engineering profession world-wide.
Innovations in construction technology demonstrate that urban
viaducts as beautifully conceived and executed as the Qurashiyah Viaduct and
the Jeddah - Makkah Elevated Expressway, Saudi Arabia, can be built simply and
economically almost anywhere in the world.
Special components or modifications to existing products like
bearings and joints, devised to meet the needs of a particular project, have
often proven widely applicable for suppliers.
