Course Syllabus

Course Title
Flipped Classroom Institute is the working title for this course.

Course Description
This course is designed to give participants the basic knowledge and skills needed to create tutorial
videos for their students. Course topics will include: the definition, nature, and history of the so-called
flipped learning model; discussion of flipped vs. flipped mastery learning; introduction and setup of
screencasting software; and discussion and planning of appropriate opportunities to create videos to
increase learning and achievement in academic classes.
This professional development course is being offered in conjunction with the Division of Human
Resources. Participants who successfully complete at least 80% of the course are eligible to earn 1 PLU
towards the renewal of their teaching certificate with the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Define the flipped learning model, define the flipped mastery model, and distinguish between
the two by explaining their similarities and differences.
Explain the concepts of screencasting using a modern software program as a guide.
Design, then create, videos in the flipped learning model, usi ng modern screencasting software
and equipment.
Analyze the current curriculum and student data to identify the best opportunities to create
tutorial videos for students.

Course Activities
This course is centered on four major areas:
A book study about the flipped teaching model.
Reading various other resources and watching videos of the flipped model in action.
Creating videos using professional screencasting software.
Looking at pacing and curriculum guides to discover opportunities to create videos on a larger scale.

Course Assignments
There will be four major tasks in this course:
Read the book associated with this course and contribute to group discussions regarding the material.
Read the materials provided on flipped teaching and screencasting and contribute to group discussions
regarding the material.
Use Camtasia Studio to create an instructional video for your class, edit the video, and finalize it.

Based on your experience creating a video, analyze your curriculum for the year to determine the best
opportunities to create similar videos.

Course Evaluations
Since this is a staff development course, there is no formal evaluation or grading procedure. That said, I

I expect you to be an active and willing participant, to contribute to discussions, and to assist your peers
as necessary to make this course a success for everyone. Having an attitude of willingness to learn and
participate will get you very far in this course.
You can expect me to provide prompt assistance, relevant and interesting course materials, and to help
you set up and use the software associated with this class. Also, I will handle uploading the final videos
you create to YouTube using the schools account, and I will provide you with the URLs for your videos
when theyre ready to be posted on your teacher webpage.

Learner Guidance and Resources


Participation in this course includes the following resources:

USB Headset
Camtasia Studio (screencasting software)
Book, Flip Your Classroom

These resources will be checked out to you from the media center. The headset and software are yours
for the duration of the year to use in creating videos; the book will be returned to the media center at
the conclusion of the course. All three resources remain the property of GCPS.

Academic Honesty
The activities in this course are designed in such a way that academic dishonesty is not a real problem.
Im encouraging you to work together on everything we do, and since there are no grades, you should
feel comfortable asking the other participants (or me) for assistance. That said, honesty is part of the
Georgia Professional Standards Commission Code of Ethics, and I expect the work you submit in your
name to be yours (with the assistance of other participants).

Disclosure
Portions of this class are being used to satisfy requirements of my graduate school program. The online
portion of this course will be monitored by my professor--know that she's there to judge me, not you!
