In Chiapas, the culture of the indigenous peoples, the Mayan past and colonial heritage all come

HIStORIA
La cultura maya fue heredera de los logros y
avances de las culturas zapoteca y olmeca. En
Chiapas, los mayas se establecieron y fundaron
grandes ciudades, legado del florecimiento de una
cultura organizada en clases sociales jerrquicas
que gobernaban ciudades independientes dentro
de un mismo imperio. A partir del declive de esta
gran cultura, las ciudades fueron abandonadas
y los indgenas chiapanecos se apoderaron del
territorio, subyugando a otras civilizaciones
prehispnicas de la regin como los zoques,
mames y tzeltales.
En 1521, los conquistadores que controlaban la
Villa del Espritu Santo en Coatzacoalcos, iniciaron
la expedicin para conquistar tierras chiapanecas.
El primer intento fue un fracaso gracias a la
ferocidad de los guerreros chiapanecos, pero
cuando el espaol Diego de Mazariegos arrib con
un ejrcito mejor organizado, estableci la Villa
Real de Chiapas, hoy San Cristbal de Las Casas. Los
evangelizadores dominicos se establecieron en
1535 y comenzaron a construir conventos, educar
a los indgenas y fundar villas.
History
The Mayan culture inherited the achievements and
advances made by the Zapotec and Olmec cultures.
The Maya settled in Chiapas and founded great cities,
resulting in the flourishing of a society organized in
hierarchical social classes that governed independent
cities within a single empire. With the decline of this
great culture, the cities were abandoned, and the
indigenous Chiapans took power over the territory,
subjugating other pre-Hispanic peoples in the region,
such as the Zoques, Mames and Tzeltales.
In 1521, the conquistadors who controlled Villa
del Espritu Santo in Coatzacoalcos set out on an
expedition to conquer the lands of Chiapas. The first
attempt ended in failure due to the ferocity of the
Chiapas warriors, but when the Spaniard Diego de
Mazariegos arrived with a better-organized army he
was able to establish the Villa Real de Chiapas, today
San Cristbal de Las Casas. Dominican evangelists
set up here in 1535 and began to build monasteries,
educate the indigenous people and founded villages.

Durante la guerra de independencia mexicana,

Chiapas no participa. La regin del Soconusco
es controlada por el gobierno centroamericano
intermitentemente hasta 1842 cuando el
entonces Presidente de Mxico, Antonio Lpez de
Santa Anna, emite en decreto su anexin definitiva
a nuestro pas. El resto de la entidad se proclam
en 1823, como territorio independiente tanto de
Mxico como de Guatemala; pero al ao siguiente,
sus habitantes votaron por pertenecer de nuevo a
la jurisdiccin mexicana.
A pesar de la abolicin de la esclavitud y de la
lucha de los misioneros evangelizadores por los
derechos indgenas, los miembros de las diversas
etnias eran considerados por la sociedad colonial
como ciudadanos de segunda clase y eran objeto
de abusos constantes. Debido a esto, en 1869 los
tzotziles radicados en San Cristbal de Las Casas,
se levantan en armas contra la injusticia de que
son objeto y recuperan su derecho a la tierra. A
este enfrentamiento se le conoce como la Guerra
de las Castas.
Hasta este momento, San Cristbal era la capital
del territorio chiapaneco; sin embargo en 1892, el
gobernador Emilio Rabasa cambia la sede del poder
estatal a Tuxtla Gutirrez. En 1911, los habitantes
de la antigua capital chiapaneca se pronuncian a
favor de retomar la designacin de capital. En las
dcadas siguientes, el estado continu su proceso
hacia la modernizacin.
Chiapas did not participate in the War of Mexican

Independence.
The
Soconusco
region
was
intermittently controlled by the Central American
government up until 1842 when then-president
Antonio Lpez de Santa Anna emitted a decree that
definitively annexed it to Mexico. In 1823 the whole
state declared itself an independent territory from
both Mexico and Guatemala.

The following year, however, the inhabitants voted

to rejoin the jurisdiction of Mexico. Despite the
abolition of slavery and the missionaries struggle
for indigenous peoples rights, the members of the
various ethnic groups were considered secondclass citizens by colonial society and were subject
to constant abuses. This led, in 1869, the Tzotzil
people living in San Cristbal de Las Casas to rise up
against the injustices they suffered and to regain
the rights to their land. This confrontation is known
as the Caste War.
Up until then, San Cristbal had been the capital of
the territory; however in 1892, the governor Emilio
Rabasa changed the seat of state power to Tuxtla
Gutirrez. In 1911, the inhabitants of the ancient
capital voted in favor of regaining its former status.
Over the following decades, the state continued its
progress towards modernization.

El nombre de Chiapas proviene de la palabra
Chiapan o Tepechiapan, forma en que se designaba
a la antigua poblacin indgena de los chiapanecas
y cuyo significado es Cerro de la Chia o Agua
debajo del Cerro. Los conquistadores, al fundar
dos ciudades en la regin, Chiapa de los Indios y
Chiapa de los Espaoles, adoptaron para ambas el
nombre de Provincia de las Chiapas.
Origin of the name

The name Chiapas comes from the word Chiapan
or Tepechiapan, the term used to refer to the former
indigenous population, and which means Peak of
Chia or Water under the Peak. The conquistadors,
upon founding two cities in the region, Chiapa de
los Indios and Chiapa de los Espaoles, adopted the
Province of Chiapas as a name for both.

BIODIVERSIDAD
Chiapas cuenta con la concentracin de especies de
animales ms grande de Latinoamrica, muchos de
los cuales pueden ser vistos en el Zoolgico Miguel
lvarez del Toro en Tuxtla Gutirrez. Asimismo,
en el estado llueve durante seis meses, lo cual
le confiere una vegetacin abundante por donde
serpentean caudalosos ros; entre los principales
est el Grijalva que se puede recorrer en lancha
teniendo como escenario el Can del Sumidero
con paredes que llegan a alcanzar los mil metros
de altura.
Biodiversity
Chiapas is home to the highest concentration of animal
species in all of Latin America, many of them on view in
the the Tuxtla Gutirrez zoo Miguel Alvarez del Toro.
The rains last for six months, which means that the
state is covered in rich vegetation through which its
overflowing rivers wind. One of the greatest rivers is
the Grijalva, which can be toured by boat against the
backdrop of the Sumidero Canyon, the walls of which
reach over 3,000 feet.

EcONOMA
Las principales industrias de la entidad son la
minera y la agricultura. El caf, el pltano y el
coco son los productos que ms se cosechan en
la frtil llanura del Soconusco. La hidroelectricidad
es una gran fuente de ingresos. Algunas presas
gigantescas como Chicoasn aprovechan el
potencial del Ro Grijalva, que fluye en el centro del
Estado. En los ltimos aos, el turismo ha cobrado
fuerza. Algunos de los sitios arqueolgicos
del Mundo Maya estn en Chiapas lo que lo ha
convertido en un lugar prioritario para quienes
quieren aprender y gozar de los vestigios de esta
cultura.
Economy
The states chief industries are mining and agriculture.
Coffee, bananas and coconuts are the principal
products grown in the fertile plains of the Soconusco.
Hydroelectricity is another important source of income.
Giant dams such as Chicoasen take advantage of the
power of the River Grijalva, which flows through the
center of the state. In the last few years, tourism has
come to the forefront. Some of the most impressive
sites of the Mayan World are in Chiapas, making it a
priority destination for those wishing to learn about
and enjoy the remains of this extraordinary culture.

ARtESANAS
Chiapas es uno de los estados que produce mayor
variedad de artesanas en Mxico, esto se debe
en parte a la gran diversidad tnica, reflejada en
pueblos orgullosos de sus orgenes; por otra parte,
el estado es prdigo en maderas y plantas como
cedro, caoba, pino, ixtle, carrizo y bejuco, adems
de minerales como el jade y de resinas como el
mbar. Durante siglos, los pueblos indgenas
han desarrollado una gran habilidad para crear
productos que utilizan en su vida diaria y que
estn llenos de colorido, como prendas, utensilios
o instrumentos musicales.
Handicrafts
Chiapas is one of the states with the greatest variety of
handicrafts in Mexico due to the great ethnic diversity
in the region which is reflected in villages proud of
their origins. This is complemented by the wealth of
materials native to the state, from woods and plants
such as cedar, mahogany, pine, agave, bamboo grass
and rattan to minerals such as jade and resins such
as amber. Over centuries, the indigenous people
developed fine skills in creating products for use
in everyday life that are full of color, such as plates,
jugs, furniture, musical instruments, embroideries and
weavings.

La sensibilidad que caracteriza la literatura
chiapaneca se ha ganado un lugar dentro de
las letras mexicanas. Poetas clsicos y jvenes
creadores abarcan las temticas del amor, la
muerte, el autoconocimiento, la descripcin de la
vida y los paisajes chiapanecos.
Literature
The sensitivity which characterizes the literature of
Chiapas has won it a place in Mexican letters. Classic
poets and young writers cover such themes as love,
death, self-awareness, as well as the description of
lives and landscapes in Chiapas.

FOLKLOR
Cuando llegaron los espaoles en el siglo XVI, los
indgenas producan msica con maderas de la
selva; el repertorio se enriqueci con la llegada de
esclavos africanos que introdujeron la marimba.
Actualmente se puede escuchar esta deliciosa
msica por las tardes en las plazas de Tuxtla
Gutirrez y San Cristbal de Las Casas.
Folklore
For centuries Chiapas has lived alongside the music
of the marimbas. When the Spanish arrived in the
16th century, the indigenous people already played
music using wooden instruments, and their repertory
was broadened by the arrival of African slaves, who
introduced the marimba. Nowadays this pleasant
music can be heard in the afternoons around the
pavilions of Tuxtla Gutirrez and San Cristbal de Las
Casas.

ARQUItEctURA
La milenaria herencia de las antiguas ciudades
del imperio maya y los innumerables templos,
as como edificaciones y conventos construidos
durante el Virreinato, convergen en Chiapas. Las
construcciones coloniales tienen el sello distintivo
de los misioneros dominicos procedentes de
Sevilla, Espaa, ciudad que estuvo ocupada por
los rabes por ocho siglos, lo cual explica la gran
cantidad de diseos moriscos trazados en cada
detalle de las fachadas virreinales que datan de
los siglos XVI al XVIII, que combinan con diseos
indgenas de las distintas regiones de la selva y la
sierra.

Architecture
Chiapas preserves a great number of centuries-old
buildings: on the one hand the ancient heritage of
the cities of the Mayan empire, and on the other the
countless churches, monasteries and civic buildings
constructed during the colonial period. These
constructions have the distinctive stamp of the
Dominican missionaries who arrived from Seville, Spain,
a city occupied by the Arabs for eight centuries. This
explains the great number of Moorish details found in
the designs of the colonial facades, which mingle with
indigenous designs from the distinct regions of the
jungle and the mountains.

San Cristbal de Las Casas es prueba viva del crisol

cultural que Chiapas es. En sus calles y edificios
del siglo XVII, indgenas chiapanecos conviven
con mestizos dentro de un marco de armona y
convivencia cada vez mayor. Anidado en los altos
de Chiapas, es uno de los pueblos ms atractivos
del estado. En la actualidad es el punto donde
confluyen varios grupos tnicos del estado,
quienes no han olvidado las tcnicas artesanales
ancestrales, que van desde los coloridos textiles
mayas, la alfarera y la forja de hierro hasta la
elaboracin de finos trabajos de filigrana y mbar.
Con un clima predominante semiclido subhmedo,

con lluvias en verano, este municipio se encuentra
situado en la parte sur de la meseta Comiteca,
pertenece a la zona del Grijalva y es un municipio
fronterizo con Guatemala.
Una de las principales industrias es la turstica, la

cual se ha desarrollado gracias a la calidez de su
gente y en base a la inigualable arquitectura de la
ciudad, que mantiene casi intacta las imgenes del
pasado, debido a la cultura tradicionalista de este
gran pueblo.

San Cristbal de Las Casas is living proof of the
cultural crucible that is Chiapas. In its streets and
17th-century buildings, the indigenous people of
Chiapas live alongside mestizos in a situation of evergreater harmony and coexistence. This attractive
city is a meeting point for various ethnic groups from
around the state who have not forgotten their ancient
handicraft techniques, which range from the brightlycolored Mayan textiles to ceramics and wrought iron,
and to the production of finely made amber and
filigree silver pieces.

naturales ms bellos de Chiapas, entre los que
destacan el parque Nacional Lagunas de Montebello
y los fastuosos Lagos de Coln; tambin por sus
vestigios arqueolgicos, destacando la Zona

This municipality, with a predominant semiwarm sub-humid climate and summer rains,
is located in the southern part of the plateau
Comiteca. It belongs to the zone of Grijalva, and
it borders with Guatemala.
It is famous for having some of the most
beautiful natural attractions in Chiapas, among
which are the Lagunas de Montebello National
Park and the lavish Lagos de Coln. Also, it
is well known for its archaeological remains,
highlighting Chinkultic Archaeological Zone.
Tourism is one of the leading industries, which has

been developed thanks to the warmth of its people and
based on the citys incomparable architecture which
preserves near-intact images of the past, therefore
resulting in the traditionalist culture of the city.

TAPAchULA DE
CRDOVA Y ORDEZ
Tapachula es uno de los municipios ms
importantes de Chiapas. Est ubicada entre la
Sierra Madre y la Llanura Costera del Pacfico,
siendo un paso obligatorio para el comercio
terrestre con Centroamrica. La creacin de
Tapachula, propiamente dicho, no se da hasta la
poca de los aztecas, cuando en 1486 esta villa
se funda como un pueblo tributario del imperio.
Durante este perodo, Tapachula se desarroll
como un gran centro de comercio, convirtindola
en una importante ciudad durante gran parte de la
poca prehispnica. Desde un inicio estas tierras
fueron de mucho inters para los espaoles debido
a sus riquezas naturales y excelente ubicacin. Es
por ello que Hernn Corts envi a estas tierras a
Pedro de Alvarado, en 1524, para colonizarlas.

Tapachula is the capital of one of the most important

municipalities in Chiapas. It is located between the
Sierra Madre and the coastal plains of the Pacific,
making it an obligatory point of passage for trade
with Central America. The creation of Tapachula proper
did not come about until the time of the Aztecs, when
in 1486 the town was founded as a tributary of the
empire, and it quickly developed into an important
center of trade. From the beginning, these lands were
of great interest to the Spanish due to their natural
resources and strategic location. For this reason
Hernan Cortes sent Pedro de Alvarado to the region in
1524 in order to colonize it.

La casa fue construida a principios del siglo XVIII con paredes de adobe
cubiertas de argamasa, pisos de ladrillo bordeados de piedra y techumbre de
madera y tejas. Su corredor principal est limitado por grandes arcos de madera
sostenidos por columnas, tambin de madera, con basamentos de piedra. Tanto
la parte central como los anexos de la casa han sido conservados con verdadero
cuidado y esmero.
Dentro del viejo stano se encuentra la cava Molino de la Pera que ofrece una
temperatura y humedad ideal a las ms de doscientas botellas de diferentes
etiquetas.

The house was built in the early eighteenth century with adobe walls covered with
mortar, brick floors lined with stone and a wooden roof with tiles. Its main hall is
marked by large wooden arches supported by wooden columns made with stone
foundations. Both the central part and the annexes of the house have been preserved
with real care and attention.
Within the old basement is the cellar Molino de la Pera (Pear Mill) which offers a
perfect temperature and humidity to over two hundred wine bottles of different labels.

En Finca Hamburgo podr conocer todo acerca de la historia del caf en nuestro

Just 33 miles from Tapachula and 3900 feet above sea level, Finca Hamburgo enjoys
a temperate climate ranging from 16 to 22C (61 to 72F). Founded in 1888 by Arthur

for 125 years. Now it opens its doors to offer accommodation and guided tours along
the Coffee Route.
