REPORT OF WEBINAR ON GUIDELINES FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

A webinar based on the topic Teaching Excellence was held on 21-08-14 at 3.30 pm at
PG Research Lab by Professor K. Parvatisam.

Definition Of Teaching
Teaching includes all the activities of providing education to other. The person who
provides education is called teacher. The teacher uses different method for giving best knowledge
to his students .He tries his best to make understand students. His duty is to encourage students to
learn the subjects.Teaching means interaction of teacher and students. They participate for their
mutual benefits. Both have their own objective and target is to achieve them. Many great teachers
of world define teaching in different way and we can say that teaching is just to train the students
so that they can stand on their own foot in society .
In teaching, three main aspects comes in our front

1st is teacher

2nd is students

3rd is education

Dimensions Of Teaching
There are three dimensions for teaching:

Knowledge

Projection

Rapport

Knowledge
Two components are critically important in teacher preparation: teacher
knowledge of the subject to be taught, and knowledge and skill in how to teach that subject.
Research and common sense tell us that subject matter knowledge is necessary for effective
teaching. But there is a second part of the equation: knowledge and skill in how to teach is
also a must. Effective teachers understand and are able to apply strategies to help students
increase achievement. They understand and apply knowledge of child and adolescent
development to motivate and engage students. They are able to diagnose individual
learning needs. They know how to develop a positive climate in the classroom in order to

make it a stimulating learning environment.

While content knowledge is important and necessary, it alone cannot
determine whether the teacher is able to teach so that students learn. That is why the National
Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the professional teacher preparation
accrediting body, requires the parallel development of teaching knowledge that is specific to the
content being taught, as well as general pedagogical knowledge and knowledge of child and
adolescent development as applied to teaching.

Rapport
Rapport is the ability to maintain harmonious relationships based on affinity for

others . Affinity or affinity seeking is defined as the active social-communicative process by

which individuals attempt to get others to like and to feel positive toward them . Why is rapport
important in the classroom? Rapport is the interpersonal side of teaching. It is what makes the
teacher more than just a lecturer. Rapport involves knowing your students and their learning styles
and using your relationship with them to teach at a more personal level. Teachers who have good
rapport with their students are skilled in ways that encourage involvement, commitment, and
interest . Ultimately, like children, students need to think that you care before they care what
you think.
Although most teachers only interaction with the students is during class time, rapport
is an interpersonal relationship that can be enhanced both in the classroom and outside. There is a
vast body of research in the literature that discusses student rapport and its effect on students in
traditional education environments as well as in distance and blended learning settings. Rapport is
generally believed to have a positive effect on learning but it has had mixed reviews in end of
course surveys. It can be hard to quantifiable judge how creating rapport will enhance teacher
effectiveness.

Characteristics Of Good Teacher

There are many characteristics for a good teacher:

A good teacher is accountable.

Accountable Holding yourself to the same expectations and standards as you hold

your students.A teacher cannot have double standards. For example, if you do not allow your
students to chew gum in your class, then you should not chew gum either.

A good teacher is adaptable.

Adaptable Making changes to lessons or activities on the fly because of an unforeseen situation or
problem. A teacher must be willing to change. If half the class does not understand a particular
concept, then you cannot move on and must quickly come up with a better way to teach that
concept.

A good teacher is caring.

Caring Going the extra mile to ensure that every student is successful no matter what. A teacher
must figure out the personalities and interests of student and incorporate components that connect
with each individual.

A good teacher is cooperative.

Cooperative The ability to work effectively with administrators, other teachers, and parents for
the good of your students. A teacher must be able to build cooperative relationships with others
around them even if they do not necessarily like them.

A good teacher is determined.

willing to do anything to ensure that all students receive the education they need.

A good teacher is empathetic.

to relate to them. A teacher must put themselves in the students shoes and see it from their
perspective. This approach is often transcending in how to help the child succeed.

A good teacher is engaging.

Engaging The ability to grab the attention of a classroom full of students and to maintain their
attention throughout the entirety of class. A teacher must create lessons that are fun, fresh, and
energetic. You want your student to walk out of your class each day looking forward to the next.

A good teacher is generous.

Generous Volunteering for extra assignments and/or giving money out of your own pocket for
classroom needs or individual student needs.Teachers do not make enough money, but most
teachers are willing to donate time and/or money to help out in areas where a need is recognized.

A good teacher is inspirational.
