AL17F Microwave Data Link

The radio equipment described in this manual uses a microwave transmitter. Do not allow people
access near the antenna during transmitter operation. The antenna must be professionally installed to a fixed
outside support in such way that the transmitted signal does not affect other radio equipment and people are
prevented from free (including accidental) access to front of the antenna.
Being in front of the antenna while the transmitter is in operation is dangerous. Do not come in front of
the antenna unless you are sure that the transmitter is off. Do not look into the waveguide while the
transmitter is on.

WARNING
It is necessary that the operator of this radio equipment complies with valid safety regulations
concerning microwave radiation.
The appropriate safety signs must be displayed near the radio equipment and by access roads to
it.

WARNING
Protection against lightning.
The antenna supporting pipe and ODU (Outdoor Unit) must be properly connected and grounded with
regard to discharges of atmospheric energy. Also the connection cable between ODU SDIDU (Software
Defined Indoor Unit) must be properly grounded. More information is in Chapter 4.10 of this document.

CAUTION
The indoor unit ALxxF SDIDU is covered by a separate manual. Do not connect this unit to the
supply voltage before reading this documentation.

The ASD Client supervision program is used with all ALCOMA links

Link parameters are set through a control PC connected to SDIDU (transferred data capacity, frequency
channel )

It is possible to insert several relay stations in the signal route if necessary due to route character

2.2 LINK CONCEPT

The ALCOMA AL17F is a microwave radio relay link whose terminals consist of indoor and outdoor units
with an antenna.
The indoor unit contains a modem, data interfaces (Ethernet, PDH a SDH) and monitoring and control
circuits. The outdoor unit contains microwave circuits only. The connection ODU SDIDU is done by one
connection coaxial cable that transmits intermediate frequency signals, monitoring signals and ODU power
supply.

2.3 OUTPUT REGULATION

The transmitted output is set at the manufacturer to 20 dBm EIRP. These conditions are based on the
EIRP peak output. Please check the local limits and regulation and set the output power properly before putting
the link to operation.

LINK DESCRIPTION

The technical parameters of the AL17F link are shown in Chapter 7, page 39.

3.1 DESCRIPTION OF OUTDOOR UNIT ODU

The outdoor unit provides transmission and receiving of digitally modulated signal in the 17 GHz
microwave band. The received signal is mixed in the outdoor unit to an intermediate frequency signal that is
further processed by the indoor unit. The duplex operation is done by a frequency separation between
transmitted and received signals. At the same time the transmitted and received signals differ in polarity.

3.2 DESCRIPTION OF INDOOR UNIT IDU

The indoor unit ALxxF SDIDU is covered by a separate manual.

3.3 ANTENNAS
Standardly delivered antennas for the AL17F link are the parabolic antennas AL1-17/ME, AL2-17/ME,
AL3-17/MP, AL4-17/MP. The antennas are designed for a compact connection with the ODU. They can be used
for horizontal and vertical polarization and for right hand or left hand installation without modifications (in case
of right hand installation the antenna is on the right hand side of the support pipe when looking into the
antenna and vice versa). All antennas are standardly equipped by protection against icing (OPN). The station
can be operated only with these antennas, or with antennas selected and approved by the manufacturer.
Regularly produced stations are right hand ones. Left hand versions can be supplied if requested by
a customer.

TERMINAL INSTALLATION

4.1 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

CAUTION
Do not operate the units without antennas, attenuators, or loads connected to the antenna port.
The transmitter could be destroyed by extensive reflection of microwave energy. Always
attenuate the signal coming to the antenna port to the level smaller than -20 dBm. This will
prevent a possible damage of the receiver module.
WARNING
LOW VOLTAGE (50 V - 1000 V) IS PRESENT INSIDE OF ALxxF SDIDU AND ODU UNITS DURING
OPERATION. PREVENT ELECTRIC CURRENT INJURY BY DISCONNECTING OF THE SUPPLY CABLE
BEFORE SERVICING OF THE TERMINAL. THE UNITS SHOULD BE REPAIRED BY QUALIFIED
PERSONNEL ONLY.

4.1.1 Evaluation of Suitable Placement

For installation and operation of the link the following must be provided:
Direct visibility
Place for attachment of antenna with ODU
Location to place ALxxF SDIDU
Route to place the ODU SDIDU connection cable
Guaranteed direct visibility is not always sufficient guarantee of quality connection. The condition for a
trouble free propagation of electromagnetic waves is pure radio visibility. If fixed objects, like tree tops,
mountains or buildings are too close to the signal route, they can distort or attenuate radio signal. This occurs
even in cases when these obstructions do not prevent direct visibility. This phenomenon can be explained by
the radio beam Fresnel zone an elliptical area that immediately surrounds the direct visibility axis (the line
between link antennas). Size of this zone varies depending on the link length and radio signal frequency. The
Fresnel zone must be calculated before design of the wireless link and it must be verified that it will not be
disturbed by any obstacles.

9/49

1.0

AL17F Microwave Data Link

Figure 4 Fresnel zone

Figure 4 shows situation when a solid object penetrates a Fresnel zone of signal propagation. The
obstacle, just like the one on the picture, causes bending of the beam along the sharp edge. This beam then
arrives at the receiver antenna little bit later than the direct beam. In other words there are two identical
signals coming to the antenna, but with various phases, which strongly degrades the signal quality; this can
cause temporary break in data transmission. Trees or other soft objects infringing on the Fresnel zone
attenuate radio signal. In short: The fact that you can see the opposite side does not mean that you can set up a
quality radio link.

4.2 PLACEMENT OF ODU ON SUPPORTING CONSTRUCTION

The link antenna must be placed sufficiently far away from other antennas, in order to avoid
undesirable perturbation of radio signal. Badly installed antenna will cause deterioration of the transmitted
signal and also of neighboring links. In the installation of radio relay link we must calculate with distances from
the roof edge or other obstacles that can be on the roof (air-conditioning, elevator shaft ). The following
pictures show incorrect and correct ways of installation of radio relay link antenna on the supporting
construction.

Losses in connectors are not considered

4.5 INSTALLATION OF THE ANTENNA RADIATOR ELEMENT ON ODU

The antenna radiator and the ODU box are one compact whole. If the radiator element is delivered
separately it needs to be attached to ODU before the ODU is installed to the antenna unit supports.
A waveguide transformer is attached to the ODU box at the manufacturer, and the feed is attached to the
transformer using for M4 bolts (Figure 9). On the AL3-17/MP and AL4-17/MP antennas the feed is firmly
attached to the parabola, see Figure 10.

The waveguide cover is removed from both the antenna radiator, and the waveguide transformer.

The antenna radiator is installed and M4 bolts are tightened. (It does not matter which way the feed is
turned.)

With the AL3-17/MP and AL4-17/MP antennas the ODU position, according to the pictograms on the
feed flange, needs to be kept.
CAUTION
The antenna radiator can be damaged during installation or disassembly of ODU if done by nonprofessionals. The antenna feed element is a precise component that needs to be handled with
utmost care. Any damage to the feed can cause improper function of the whole antenna
system.

WARNING
The radio relay link AL17F MP155 is not intended to be used by non-specialist personnel. The
equipment must be operated at least by personnel familiar with it (Paragraph 3, of the Public
Notice No. 50/1978). Installation, adjusting and maintenance must be performed by the
manufacturer instructed personnel with electrotechnical qualifications (Paragraph 5, Public
Notice No. 50/1978). Therefore the following chapters do not contain work procedures split into
individual steps.

4.6 INSTALLATION OF THE ANTENNA SYSTEM

Station antenna systems are attached to a vertical steel pipe that is a part of a girder mast structure, or
to other steel constructions firmly connected to the building, on which the station is being installed. Diameters
of supporting pipes are set by the Table 10 on the page 43.
The antenna unit may not be installed on building equipment that have not been set or modified for
this purpose.

We recommend that all bolts and nuts are greased before installation.
The antenna is normally delivered as the right hand side one, where, in front view into the antenna, the
antenna holder and ODU are on the right side of the support pipe. For the change to the left hand side
attachment the parabolic antenna must be unscrewed from the antenna holder and the holder needs to be
turned by 180. Then the antenna needs to be screwed back, so the condensed water drain holes in the

antenna OPN are facing down. The bottom part of parabolic antenna is marked with the sticker "This side
always down".
The change to the left side installation is always done without ODU installed, and on a horizontal
support (table) of appropriate dimensions if possible.
Antenna bracket nuts are always tightened by the no. 17 wrench.

4.7 RADIO LINK INSTALLATION

THE RADIO RELAY link AL17F USES CROSS POLARIZATION
ODU A is set with the opposite polarization than ODU B
(e.g.:

The attachment of the AL4-17/MP antenna holder (also for the AL3-17/MP antenna)

The attachment of ODU with antenna must be sufficiently rigid to withstand wind acting on the ODU
without making the link to point in a wrong direction. These forces are primarily caused by the front wind
resistance of the microwave antenna.
The ODU box is installed with the outlet of connection cable pointing down with the horizontal
polarization or to the side with the vertical one. It is never installed with the outlet pointing up.
Possible disassembly can be performed without affecting the connection pointing direction.
For easy pulling up of ODU with the ME antenna unit type to a mast, a support pipe with the 50 mm
that is approx. above the center of gravity of this system can be used. The parabolic antennas AL3-17/MP and
AL4-17/MP are equipped by a lifting eye for this purpose.
Please note that, according to the Safety Office Public Notice no. 324/90 Coll. About safety of work and
technical equipment during construction, workers must be equipped by PPE, especially a hard hat, during work
on masts and in their proximity.
Firm tightening of all connections of an antenna system must be checked after installation. We
especially note the tightening of the antenna unit brackets to the antenna support pipe and of the bolts that
secure the vertical setting.

17/49

AL17F Microwave Data Link

4.8 INSTALLATION OF INDOOR UNIT

The ALxxF SDIDU unit can be installed in the following manner:
Free standing
The SDIDU unit should be located in such way that air can flow around it freely.
Installed into a rack
It is recommended to place the ALxxF SDIDU unit into a slot that has unoccupied positions above and
below the unit to secure proper ventilation and cooling. The ALxxF SDIDU unit size corresponds to 19 standard
with height of 1U.
Installed on a wall
The AlxxF SDIDU unit is attached to a bracket attached to a wall.

4.9 INSTALLATION OF CONNECTING CABLE

To manufacture the connection cable you need the following tools and material:

A coaxial connection cable, see table 2 on the page 10

N - connector and TNC connector for a coaxial cable

Connection crimping pliers

Grounding kit for coaxial cable, e.g. FI.MO.TEC.

Flash protector for coaxial cable, e.g. BrOK

All this material to manufacture the coaxial cable can be optionally provided by ALCOMA if requested
by a customer.
The ALxxF SDIDU unit has the TNC connector socket on the front panel. The outside unit has an N-type
connector. Thus in order to connect SDIDU ODU we need a cable with TNC-type connector plug on one end
and N-type connector plug on the other end. It is also possible to use a coaxial cable with N-type connectors on
both ends. Then, however, we would need N TNC adapters. Make sure that you do not damage the cable
during installation. Make sure that the cable is not bent more than allowed (approx. 10 cable diameters).
The ODU and SDIDU units and their connection must be properly grounded to protect the terminal. The
construction, to which the outdoor unit is attached, and the connection cable have to be grounded as well in
order to protect the terminal from destruction due to atmospheric discharges.
Before final connection of ODU SDIDU the cable should be tested (DC test) in order to find possible
defects. This means that it should be tested for possible breaks, and whether there is not a short circuit
between the inner conductor and the shield.
Count on some reserve for bends and tension, while calculating cable length.

18/49

1.0

AL17F Microwave Data Link

4.10 ODU, SDIDU AND CONNECTION CABLE GROUNDING

WARNING
The antenna supporting pipe and Outdoor Unit (ODU) must be properly connected and grounded
with regard to discharges of atmospheric energy. The following instructions present
recommendations leading to terminal protection. Always refer to valid standards and regulations.
The ODU unit is grounded by a copper cable with minimal diameter of 14 mm with yellow-green
insulation, ended with cable eyelet. The grounding cable is bolted to marked stainless steel M5 stud located
next to the N connector (figure 1).
T The antenna system grounding points for the AL1-17/ME and AL2-17/ME antennas are common with
ODU MP3. The grounding points of the AL3-17/MP and AL4-17/MP antennas are at the bolts for attaching the
equipment to the parabolic mirror.
The SDIDU grounding points are marked studs with 3 mm diameter bolts placed on the SDIDU front
panel. Both SDIDU studs can be used as connection points for protective conductor. The connection must be
made by a copper conductor with a minimum diameter of 5 mm with yellow-green insulation.

When selecting the route for IF cable the best is to lead the cable through a connected channel, cable
trough, cable guide or metal pipes.
If the terminal location does not have the cable infrastructure available and the cable leads outside of a
building, then the cable should be as near to the building as possible and its route should lead along conductive

parts of the building (metal pipes, steel ladders etc.). In this case the IF cable grounding is especially
recommended.
Selection of the cable entrance into a building should depend on the shortest distance to the nearest
grounding node of the building grounding system possible.
This whole equipment should be, if possible, located in the space that is protected by lightning traps
against direct lightning strike. If this cannot be guaranteed even through installation of additional traps, then
other corresponding modifications must be performed according to the SN EN 62305-4 (Protection against
lightning) standard and after consultation with a professional.

4.11 MANIPULATION WITH THE USER SPACE COVER

The user space cover enables access to the user interfaces for connection and diagnostics of ODU only.
This eliminates a possibility of undesirable interference into other ODU parts.
The cover is attached by 2 M6 bolts that can be unscrewed by an Allen wrench no. 5. One of the bolts
can be only partially loosened, which ensures attachment to the box during manipulation with the cover.
Retightening of this bolt in open position enables locking of the lid in any position.
Since the user buses are located in the inside hermetically enclosed space of the box, the lid is provided
with a gasket. To protect the gasket from damage, please rigorously keep the safety notice specified below.

Warning
The bolt that ensures attachment of the cover during manipulation must be loosened at least by
1.5 to 2 turns during moving of the cover. In case that the bolt is tightened during moving of
the cover more or completely, the gasket is sliding over the box sharp edges that can damage
the gasket seriously.

Cable braiding

Release cable braiding by slight turning of the cable dielectric.

Put on the middle contact onto the middle coaxial cable conductor and push it all the way to the dielectric, then
crimp it. There is a small hole on the side of the contact to check proper pushed in position of the middle
conductor. In case of cable RT50/20 you need to cut a thread using an M2.5 button die on the middle conductor
along the whole length of the exposed part, otherwise you will not be able to put on the middle connector
contact onto the middle coaxial cable conductor that has a 2.6 mm diameter, since the connector contact hole
is only M2.5. (The middle conductor must be cut vertically and must have no burrs.)

Crimped

Pull the connector body over thus prepared cable. You need to make sure that the crimping extension is pushed
between the dielectric and braiding and no braiding wire remains near the dielectric. Pushing in is possible by

slight turning of the connector, not by twisting of the cable. Push the connector body until the middle
conductor is all the way at the dielectric.

Push the crimping tube forward across the braiding all the way to the connector body (the crimping tube should
overlap cover of the coaxial cable) and crimp it as tightly as possibly by crimping pliers.

PUTTING LINK INTO OPERATION

5.1 BEFORE PUTTING THE LINK INTO OPERATION

Before putting the link into operation the user must verify whether he has available documents
certified by the distributor that verify that the product is in the safe condition.
The manufacturer delivers Measuring and Testing Protocol together with the link, based on a special
request, where basic electrical parameters measured during activation and adjusting of the link are specified.
Installation and commissioning of the radio relay AL17F link can be performed by the manufacturer or
by a company authorized by him only. The installation can be performed by connecting to a power grid, whose
technical condition and manner of protection against electric current injury meets conditions oflocal standards
and related regulations. The user must verify whether the SDIDU supply voltage agrees with the output voltage
of a supply power supply. If using of extension cables is absolutely necessary, then these cables must be routed
in the way that would prevent their damage, overheating, or possible injuries to personnel (by tripping).
For reasons of achieving high operational reliability, parameter stability and long life the units (even
enclosed in a cabinet) may not be placed near heat, water, dust, or vibration supplies etc.
The ODU units do not contain any adjustment or tuning elements that would have to be modified
during commissioning by customers. The units are delivered tuned and tested. Removal of possible defects and
failures within the warranty period can be done only by the manufacturer or a company authorized by the
manufacturer. Any manipulation with adjustment elements is prohibited. Any unprofessional interference with
the equipment, especially manipulation with adjustment elements voids the warranty.

5.2 CONNECTION OF SDIDU TO POWER AND PC

CAUTION
SDIDU DC supply voltage is 48 V 10%. Not adhering to this voltage supply range or to its
polarity can cause damage to the equipment.

Figure 19 Recommended connection of SDIDU to power supply

Safety Instructions
We recommend connecting SDIDU to protected power network. Especially if SDIDU is supplied
from common and very powerful 48 V DC supply, then there should be a circuit breaker used
on the supply cable between the power supply and SDIDU with the nominal current of 2 A.
27/49

1.0

AL17F Microwave Data Link

The SDIDU power supply must be a floating one. This can prevent conflicts during grounding of the
indoor units. The SDIDU indoor unit has inside interconnected positive power supply pole connected to its
frame.
The ALxxF SDIDU unit is supplied with a power supply connector (see figure 20), to which power supply
conductors are connected, which creates the power supply cable. A completed power supply cable can be
supplied on request. Recommended diameter of the supply conductor is about 1 mm2 for cables less than
3 meters long. The power supply cable should be made from stranded wire conductors to decrease tension in
the SDIDU power supply connector. A negative pole of power supply ( 48 V DC) is connected to the pin no. 2
(marked V) of the power supply connector and the positive pole is connected to the pin no. 1 (marked RET).
WARNING
Using a power supply with unsuitable grounding reference can cause destruction of SDIDU or
the supply power supply.

Connect the supply cable to the power supply 48 V DC and place voltmeter probes to the connector
on the other side of the cable. Place the + probe to the pin no. 2 (-V) and the probe to the pin no. 1
(RET), see figure 20.

Switch the power supply 48 V DC on and verify whether the voltmeter shows a voltage between 44
V and 52 V (the voltmeter probes are placed on the connector according to the instructions in the
previous paragraph). Set the correct voltage if it is not in the given range.

Switch off the power supply.

Plug in the supply cable connector into the socket on the front panel of the ALxxF SDIDU unit. Place the
voltmeter probes to the contacts of the supply connector (you can place them on the terminal bolts)
according to the instructions in the point 2. Please notice that ALxxF SDIDU does not have the supply
power switch. After you switch on the 48 V DC power supply the ODU and SDIDU units will come on.

Switch on the 48 V DC power supply and check, whether the voltmeter shows the voltage according
to the point 3.

Connect the ALxxF SDIDU unit to a computer using the Cat-5 Ethernet cable, or connect the ALxxF
SDIDU unit to a computer network also by the Cat-5 Ethernet cable. The Ethernet cable is connected to
the NMS 1 or 2 socket at the ALxxF SDIDU front panel. See the picture 3-3 in the ALxxF SDIDU indoor
unit manual.

5.3 POINTING OF MICROWAVE LINK

Pointing of a microwave link is done by adjusting antennas to the maximum level of received signal. The
pointing of a microwave link needs to be done in the horizontal and vertical directions systematically and very
carefully in several steps. The pointing is done gradually at both link stations. It is not possible to point both
stations at the same time. Pointing of a microwave link needs to be done during stable sunny weather (dry air).
If there are meteorological fluctuations along the route (rain, snow) that cause sudden changes of the level of
received signal, then it is better to interrupt the pointing a wait for better weather. At the beginning of pointing
both opposite stations must already be roughly adjusted and switched on in order to pick up their signal. This is
difficult with long links where bigger gain antennas with consequently narrower radiation diagrams are used.

5.3.1 Rough Adjustment

The rough adjustment can be done by sight using binoculars rested against the antenna. If the
visibility is bad, or distance is too long, you need to determine the azimuth first using a compass. Caution!
Compass measurement accuracy is influenced by steel mast construction! The rough pointing should have a
variation of max. 5 from ideal line between antennas. We are trying to attain a signal of the opposite station
by horizontal turning of the antenna by 30 from assumed direction. We are gradually changing the vertical
setting and by horizontal turning seek the highest level of the received signal in the receiving direction. We do
not recommend changing of both directions at the same time. You need to roughly set the maximum gain (main
signal lobe).

Pointing Procedure:

Loosen all M10 bracket nuts of the antenna support by no. 16/17 mm and 13 mm wrench.

After removing the BNC connector cover at the bottom part of the ODU box connect DC
voltmeter set to the min. range of 5 V to it. It is more advantageous to use an analog voltmeter
for easier reading while searching for a maximum value. (In a pinch you can connect a DC ampere
meter with the min. range of 5 mA).
CAUTION
The rotary switch in the position Pointing also switches off a transmitter of the local station.
Switching off of the output also in the remote station by the rotary switch can be used to find
a level of interference signals (background noise) on given channels.

Fine horizontal pointing

Loosen all M10 antenna support bracket nuts using no. 16/17 wrench. It is better to loosen the
nuts without unnecessary play that would later cause a loss of exact direction after tightening..

Turning of the parabolic antenna by 15 you can find the main lobe on the connected DC
voltmeter and in the beginning of measurement also both side lobes of the antenna radiation
characteristic.

Setting of the maximum level on the main lobe.

After you set the maximum level on the main lobe, fix the antenna in the found direction by
tightening the antenna support M10 bracket nuts.

Vertical Pointing

Loosen the fixation M10 bolts without unnecessary play that would cause loss of the proper
direction after tightening.

By turning of the parabolic antenna you can find the main lobe on the connected DC voltmeter
and in the beginning of measurement also both side lobes of the antenna radiation characteristic.

Set the maximum level on the main lobe.

After you set the maximum level on the main lobe, tighten ME type antennas by tightening bolts

In order to reach the direction stability and resistance against outside loads the antennas AL3-17/MP,
AL4-17/MP use a different way of attachment in comparison with smaller antennas. There is a support bracket
that prevents sliding of the antenna down along a pipe at the bottom part. There is a special set of brackets
above this one for a fine setting in the horizontal and vertical directions

The vertical setting bolts are loosened for the vertical pointing. For horizontal pointing then the
support bracket bolts.

During pointing of an antenna in the horizontal direction position of the antenna is roughly set
and the M10 bolt on the main bracket are tightened. The antenna position for the maximum
signal is set by the M10 nuts on the rotating bracket.

All M10 bolts on the horizontal pointing brackets are tightened.

During pointing of the antenna in vertical direction the vertical pointing bolts are loosened. The
antenna is set to the highest signal level by a connecting rod with M10 nuts.

All M10 bolts are tightened to secure the antenna vertical position.

The pointing procedure in both horizontal and vertical directions must be repeated several times to
make sure that the best maximum of the radiation characteristic was found. The opposite station antenna
needs to be final adjusted the same way. It is necessary to prevent sliding of the parabolic antenna along the
support pipe during horizontal pointing.

The value of received signal can be determined either by using a monitoring system(e.g. RSL in GUI), or
by recalculationh of RSSI voltage to receiving level in dBm. The calibration graph for RSSI, see figure 27, is used
for this purpose.
Calculate the theoretical level of the received signal. This calculation is an important indicator to
discover potential problems during link setup. The calculated and measured levels of the signal should not
differ too much (max. 3 dB). If the measured signal level is smaller than the calculated one, then the link must
be fine tuned.
33/49

1.0

AL17F Microwave Data Link

It makes sense to write down all measured values for checking later.
A frequent error during antenna pointing is directing to an antenna side lobe. The antenna can then
show a sharp peak, however, the signal level is about 20 dB lower. Therefore it is important to turn an antenna
during pointing at least 10 in horizontal and vertical direction and catch the main and both side lobes of the
antenna radiation diagram. We need to realize that the antenna radiation diagram is three dimensional, and if
we make a setting error in one direction (for example vertical one), then it is possible to receive only the side
lobes in the other direction, and they do not even need to be equal doe to route conditions.
The radiation characteristics of parabolic microwave antennas are shown in the measurement protocols
for ALCOMA antenna certification. ALCOMA will provide copies of these protocols upon request.

5.4 CONTROL CALCUALTION

The received signal level (RSL) can be determined from the following equation:
RSL = PTX + GTX ANT Lfree + GRX ANT
where:
RSL
received signal level
[dBm],
PTX
transmitted output
[dBm],
GTX ANT transmitting antenna gain
[dB]
GRX ANT receiving antenna gain
[dB]
Lfree
free environment attenuation [dB]
In the Czech Republic based on the General Permission No. VO-R/10/03.2007-4 (CTO) and in the Slovak
Republic based on the General Permission No. VPR-05/2001 (T SR) the PTX+GTX ANT = max. 20 dBm.
The following relationship is valid for the free environment attenuation during good atmospheric conditions
(without rain and fog):
Lfree[dB] = 92,45 + 20log10( d f )
where:

5.5 CHANGE OF POLARIZATION

The AL17F link uses both horizontal and vertical polarization. The polarization units are always
determined by a transmitter. A receiver always have the opposite polarization.
The polarization setting can be performed without loosing the link direction just by turning ODU by 90;
it is done as follows:

Unscrew the ODU attachment bolts and pull the whole unit carefully out of the antenna holder.

Unscrew 4 M6 Allen screws that hold ODU to the supporting ODU metal sheet.

Turn the ODU together with radiator by 90. Turning direction is not important. However, for
horizontal polarization the connecting cable output must point down and for vertical polarization to
the side.

Reattach the ODU back by M6 Allen screws to the supporting metal sheet.

Using the center guide ring insert the ODU into the antenna.

Screw in the ODU attachment bolts.

The used polarization for left hand or right hand ODU installation can be determined according to the
position of the link cable outlet. If the outlet points down, the used polarization is horizontal, if to the side, it is
vertical.

5.6 MEASUREMENT LOOPS

The SDIDU unit allows closing of measurement loops. The measurement loops are ways to verify and
test wireless links or data networks. There are several types of loops available, including line interfaces (e.g. E1).
Selection of a loop and its period is simply input using GUI. More information is available in the ALxxF SDIDU
indoor unit manual.

OPERATIONAL INSTRUCTIONS

6.

6.1 SAFETY CHECK

Standard regular inspections and checks of safe status during operation are recommended once every
24 months. Inspections and checks are recommended to be performed by the supplier professional service.
Each AL17F data link is checked within check out inspection and its parameters are measured according
to the SN 33 1500 standard (Inspection and testing of electrical installations). ODU of the radio relay link
AL17F is an electrical device of the class B (appliances used in outside environment), supplied by SELV (Safety
Extra-Low Voltage) supply and inside of the unit there is no higher voltage than SELV. The outdoor unit allows
connection of dead parts by a grounding bolt to a protection circuit that serves also as a protection against over
voltage and excessive currents of atmospheric origin.
During regular check and inspection of ODU and antenna we recommend to check:

Regular checks should be performed at least once a year.

Tightness of ODU.

Condition of antenna OPN (protection against icing) cover.

Status of connection cable and its feed-through.

Tightening and lubrication of all attachment bolts and nuts.

Attachment of grounding to grounding points and its connection to earth.

We recommend measuring and recording the level of received signal.

6.2 OPERATION
The radio relay AL17F link does not require any service or maintenance during operation. The link can
be remotely monitored through TELNET, or user environment (GUI) accessible through an internet browser
during operation. The GUI environment is intended for management and diagnostics of ALCOMA AL17F radio
relay links. All current conditions, events and commands are available in the user environment menu, see the
figure 29.
The monitoring system enables diagnostics of the microwave link and both local and remote ends of the
link. The monitoring system is not necessary for the link transfer function itself (the link can be operated even
without monitoring elements). However, monitoring is giving us diagnostic possibilities, which simplifies
checking of the proper link function, or localization of possible defects.

36/49

6.2.1 Emergency Conditions

Emergency conditions, like excessive heating, damage to power supply cable, pouring liquid into the
unit, damage to cover, fall of the unit and possibly some other unusual situations (like sparking or smoking) can
endanger personnel and property. Therefore it is necessary to disconnect the unit from power supply
immediately and hand it over to professional service for inspection.
WARNING
Persons without the appropriate electrotechnical qualifications are prohibited from manipulation
with the power supply without previous disconnection of the supply from power network. There
is life threatening high voltage inside. Installation, adjusting and maintenance must be performed
by a manufacturer instructed personnel with electrotechnical qualifications (Paragraph 5, Public
Notice No. 50/1978).

37/49

1.0

6.2.2 Repairs
CAUTION
Repairs, adjustments and tuning can be performed only by a professional service company, whose
employees are instructed at the equipment manufacturer according to the AL17F microwave data
link service manual. Operation personnel is prohibited from opening covers, breaking seals and
unprofessionally interfering with the equipment.
After each product repair or discovery of emergency condition there must be demonstrable inspection
of the safe product condition. This inspection must be recorded and signed by an authorized person. This
record must be handed, together with the repaired product, to the user. The inspection may be performed by
personnel qualified at least by Paragraph 5, Notice No. 50/1978 (knowledgeable worker).

6.3 ENDING OF OPERATION ECOLOGICAL LIQUIDATION

The product is, from the ecological standpoint, classified as a hazardous electrotechnical object. After
its service life it is, according to Law No. 7/2005 (Waste Law), an electronic waste, and as such it must be
handed over to the appropriate enterprise that performs recycling of old electronic products. The product may
not be liquidated as general community waste. The ALCOMA Company has concluded a Contract about
liquidation of electronic waste with the SAFINA a.s. Company.
In agreement with the Public Notice No. 352/2005, Paragraph 8c every serial label that is placed on
each product shows a graphic symbol of stricken through waste bin that cautions about obligations related to
liquidation of electronic waste.

The product transport packaging is made from common recyclable material (paper and polyethylene)
marked as such by a label according to the SN 77 0052-2 standard.

The transmitter output is set during manufacturing so the transmitted output EIRP (i.e., including parabolic
antenna gain) is in the Czech Republic in agreement with VO-R/10/03.2007-4 and in the Slovak Republic
with VPR-05/2001, and is max. 20 dBm.

The coaxial adapter TNC-N can be ordered at the manufacturer. The connection coaxial cable can then have N
connectors on both ends.

Table 11 Surrounding temperature ranges

SDIDU an ODU units surrounding environment must not contain aggressive vapors and gases, must
have normal radiation level, and be without vibrations and shocks. ODU is cooled by natural air circulation,
SDIDU contains fans. If used in environment that does not meet these requirements, the user must consult the
operational conditions with the suppliers technical service.
The microwave link is resistant against effects of wind with speeds of up to 33 m/s (120 km/hour)
without influence to transmission quality. Mechanical stability of the link is guaranteed up to the wind speeds
of 56 m/s (200 km/hour). Permanent deformation can occur above this threshold, however, without damage to
ODU itself.
Transport of ODU and SDIDU is possible only after disconnection of the connecting coaxial cable and
power supplies.
Cold Start
The minimum temperature to start the AL17F outdoor link unit is -45C. The outdoor unit will work, but
its proper function is not guaranteed.
Transport and Storage
The radio relay link units can be transported only in covered vehicles and the units must be protected
against direct weather influence at the same time. They should be transported in suitable (best is original)
packaging in order to prevent excessive loads through shaking, vibrations etc., they are not allowed to be
dropped. The specific form of transport is a matter of agreement between the manufacturer and the client. The
radio relay units must be stored in dry, partially air-conditioned areas. The range of storage temperatures is 0,
with the relative humidity max. 95%.
