Neil Menard - mayor

Hi Folks, my name is Neil Menard & I

have put my name forward to run for
Mayor of Merritt.
As a young man, I served in the Royal
Canadian Navy, stationed out of Esquimalt,
BC. Upon release with an honourable discharge, I went to work in the forest industry
and eventually for IWA Canada.
I am married with three grown children and am the proud grampa of four
grandchildren. I have done work in this
region since the late 1970s, but it was
when our two sons played junior hockey
with the Centennials that we really
formed an attachment to this city and the
Nicola Valley. I have lived in Merritt for
the past eleven years and a Council
member since the last by-election.
Merritt is favourably located in the
Nicola Valley with very good access to
the rest of the province. Thus our city has
huge potential for growth. It is a good
place to establish a viable business & a
wholesome place to live, raise a family or
retire. The surrounding area has a unique
beauty with opportunity to pursue a
boundless variety of outdoor activities in
all seasons. At the moment, Merritt has
only a toehold in BC's thriving tourist industry & I would like to see this developed so that Merritt is a recognized
tourist destination.
This is a city we can be proud of and it
would be a privilege to serve as its Mayor.
On Nov 5, 12 & 15 vote Menard for mayor.

David Laird - rural school trustee

Education is the most important gift we

can give our children. As a rural school
trustee for the past three years I have
worked continuously to increase learning
opportunities for students to keep them
engaged in their learning so they can experience success in their future.
I was on the human resources committee and negotiated 5-year union contracts
with CUPE and the BC teachers union to
bring about uninterrupted learning for the
students. We worked with local stakeholders to build a five year strategic plan.There
is also a negotiated local education agreement with each First Nation Band in the
District. This gave everyone an opportunity
to be part of a shared vision for all the students and educators of School District 58.
I also sat on the building committee
building a new school at Nicola Canford,
renovating the MSS school gymnasium
and numerous other building maintenance projects. I have also been an active
board representative with the Nicola Canford Pac Committee. With the planning
that is now in place we have the opportunity for each student to work to his or her
full potential in an uninterrupted self directed educational learning environment.
On November 15th I ask for your vote to
continue to deliver a quality education to
students of School District 58.

On Saturday, Nov. 8, 6pm in the Merritt library, the Community Choir joins
Greg Dickson & Mark Forsythe who will
talk about their book, From the West Coast
to the Western Front, compiled from stories, artifacts and photos shared by CBC
Radios BC Almanac listeners.
Almost 56,000 men & women from BC
served King and Country during the
Great War. More than 6,200 of them died
in battle. At least 335 men & women from
the Nicola Valley served, with 45 of them
not returning. Sponsored by Nicola Valley Museum and the Merritt Library.

Remembrance Day ceremony

The Legions Remembrance Day ceremony will take place on Tues., Nov. 11,
starting at 10.15am at the Civic Center,
then at 10.50am, the march out to the
Cenotaph, 11am Last Post, 11.02am Revellie, 11.05am Pipers lament, 11.10 begin the
laying of wreaths, and 11.30am the march
to RCL 96. This year, they will have 2 or
3 presenters at a time to lay wreaths, to
shorten the time in the cold weather.

My name is Dave Baker and I have been on your city council for the past six years and
would be honored to serve for another four. My wife Susan and I have lived here in Merritt
for the past twenty years, and in that time we have brought up two wonderful daughters.
Presently, I hold the position of division shipper at Tolko Industries here in Merritt.
I have thoroughly enjoyed working as part of a team representing the people of
Merritt. This is not something that I take lightly, and with your support I would like
to continue to serve my community providing good leadership and continue to build
for a bright future for all of us. I bring honesty, integrity, and an open mind to the
council table. I have no problem asking or answering the tough questions and holding
others, as well as myself, accountable.
I wont make a lot of promises, while individual councillors can advocate for specific
interests, it is the responsibility of the council as a whole to represent the broad interests of
the community. Personally, I pride myself on putting forth the effort that it takes to make
informed decisions for our city. What I can confidently say is that I will continue to make
time to listen to and communicate with you, the residents of Merritt.
