Perforating and gravel or frac packing

Single-zone gravel- and frac-pack solutions range from the conventional multipletrip system to the more efficient single-trip sand control solution.
Conventional gravel-packingin multiple trips

Conventional gravel packing requires multiple trips into and out of the well to run
the sump packer, perforate, and deploy the screen and gravel-pack assembly.
This proven and reliable technology is widely used and is often the most practical
choice. Our QUANTUM gravel-pack system and QUANTUM MAX system with
higher pressure and temperature ratings are both available for this technique.
Alternate Path technology can be combined with either system when increased
reservoir or wellbore complexity makes it more challenging to pack the annulus
fully.
Perforating and gravel or frac packingin a single trip

When greater efficiency is a primary objective because of depths, pressures,

costs, or risks, the unique QUANTUM PERFPAC and QUANTUM MAX PERFPAC
systems allow perforating and gravel or frac packing in a single trip. Both systems
use high-performance, big-hole charges that maximize wellbore productivity. Once
on depth, the guns are dropped into the rathole at the instant before they fire,
protecting the rest of the assembly from shock. The BHA is then lowered to
position the screens across the perforations and the sand control procedure
starts. Both systems are compatible with Alternate Path technology.

TCP and Completion Perforating Applications

Your choice of tubing-conveyed perforating (TCP) string design will vary depending on your completion type:
temporary, permanent, or workover. The strings listed below include only the most common components for
different TCP applications. Your Schlumberger representative can advise you on the most efficient string
configuration for your application.

Multicycle, independent dual valve tool command and control

The IRDV intelligent remote dual valve tool allows independent command of two
valves in the tool string: a testing valve and a circulating valve. Operated by the
IRIS intelligent remote implementation system, the IRDV dual valve can operate
both valves in multiple conditions and is immune to downhole pressure and
temperature changes.
Reliable, independent control

The IRDV dual valve features nitrogen-free, hydrostatically powered testing and
circulating valves in one tool. Low-pressure pulses in the annulus enable
independent multicycle operation of both valves without interfering with the
operation of other tools in your test string. The IRDV dual valve, as part of the
Quartet downhole reservoir testing system enabled by Muzic wireless telemetry,
can be controlled using wireless commands or low-pressure pulses, provides realtime tool feedback, and allows bidirectional communication for greater tool
command and verification.
Reduced operating time

The IRDV dual valve enables faster, more efficient operations by issuing direct or
sequential commands that eliminate the need to use complex indexing systems.
The intelligent command of the system keeps a complete record of tool
operations, valuable information that can be used for postjob verification. As part
of the Quartet system enabled by Muzic telemetry, the dual valve allows real-time
data to be wirelessly transmitted between downhole and the surface. The data

can be analyzed onsite or at a remote location.

Flexible testing operations

Exclusive to the IRDV dual valve is a downhole redundancy option. This oncommand mechanical override gives greater flexibility during reservoir testing,
providing the ability to run multiple IRDV dual valves in your tool string.
Complementary downhole configuration

Run the IRDV dual valve as part of the Quartet-HT high-temperature downhole
reservoir testing system or the Quartet system enabled by Muzic telemetry. These
systems deliver the highest-quality pressure measurements and representative
fluid samples with maximum safety and efficiency for altogether higherperformance reservoir testing.
Special IRDV applications

The IRDV dual valve offers a variety of command options to provide the flexibility
and diversity to operate for specific applications in which low-pressure pulses,
system-activation compatibility, or sequential and automatic valve operation is
required.

The explosive automatic gun release (SXAR) is used to drop tubing-conveyed

perforating (TCP) guns to the bottom of the well when they are fired. Dropping
them to the bottom keeps the string from becoming stuck or clogged with sand in
unconsolidated formations in which sanding is a problem. It also eliminates the
need for wireline or pressure-activated drop-off in highly deviated wells in which
drop-off must be quickly initiated when the guns are fired to start the string
moving.
A full-tubing opening exists after the gun string is dropped, and the tailpipe
incorporates a muleshoe entry wireline guide. Firing heads and no-gos are
dropped as one piece for easy fishing. The SXAR gun release is compatible with a
range of firing heads, including the drop-bar hydrostatic firing head, high-pressure
hydraulic-delay firing head, trigger charge firing head, and the ProFire and eFire
programmable firing heads.
Standard service is for a non-H2S environment, but H2S versions are available at
reduced pressure ratings. Another option is a choice of threads.

Shunt tube technology for openhole and cased hole wells

Alternate Path systems use shunt tubes and nozzles to bypass bridges and fill in
voids that can occur when gravel and frac packing.

Operator Eliminates Sand Production in Complex Reservoir

and Saves 5 Days of Rig Time per Well

The goal was to propagate a fracture across the reservoir

height with high pump rates and use shunt tubes to
ensure a full gravel pack of the entire screen and casing
annulus. Read case study
System designs to ensure complete annular packs

Each system is composed of a screen with shunt tubes, fluid systems with specific
requirements, and a customized pumping design. This design helps achieve a
successful stimulation treatment with a complete annular pack while ensuring the
integrity of the lower completion.
Applications for the most challenging environments

Alternate Path systems can be used in both cased hole and openhole applications
in challenging environments. The system helps ensure a successful completion by
producing complete annular packs--both in cased hole wells with long or
laminated intervals and in openhole wells with narrow windows between fracture
and pore pressures.
Multiple configurations combining technologies

Several types and configurations of Alternate Path systems are available for
openhole and cased hole completions.
Openhole wells

OptiPac Alternate Path openhole screen options are available le to suit the
characteristics of the reservoir and wellbore to be gravel packed. Both wirewrapped and premium sintered mesh versions are available, each with either one
or two transport tubes.
Cased hole wells

In cased hole wells, Alternate Path screens are available with conventional
QUANTUM and HPHT QUANTUM MAX gravel-pack systems. the MZ Alternate
Path system, the QUANTUM PERFPAC system, and the MZ-Xpress gravel pack
system.

Ensure full annular packs and eliminate screenouts

The exclusively licensed Alternate Path sand screens use shunt tubes to create
an alternate slurry path that allows the slurry to bypass bridges and fill in voids.
This screen and tube configuration helps ensure a complete annular pack and
eliminate screenouts, reducing the risks of screen and gravel-pack failure and
deterioration in well productivity and increasing completion longevity and
reliability.
Openhole Wells

OptiPac Alternate Path openhole screen options are available to suit the
characteristics of the reservoir and wellbore to be gravel packed. Both wirewrapped and premium sintered mesh versions are available, each with either one

or two transport tubes.

Alternate Path Technology
Cased Hole Wells

In cased hole wells, Alternate Path screens can be used with conventional
QUANTUM and HPHT QUANTUM MAX gravel-pack systems and the single-zone
QUANTUM PERFPAC perforating and gravel-pack system. They are also
compatible with the multizone MZ-Xpress and QUANTUM PERFPAC systems,
which fracture and gravel pack in a single trip

The resulting pack helps prevent premature screenout, erosion hot spots, hardware damage, and consequent
completion failure, in even the most challenging environments.

OptiPac Alternate Path screens use shunt tubes and nozzles to bypass bridges and fill in voids left during
gravel and frac packing

In nonhomogeneous reservoirs, bridges can form prematurely when high leakoff occurs from the wellbore to
the formation, leaving voids in the annulus below the bridge. This premature bridging increases the risk of early
screenout and leads to potential completion failure. Alternate Path technology uses shunt tubes with nozzles
on the outside of screens to create an alternate flow path that allows slurry to bypass the bridges and fill the
voids below them. Use of the shunt tubes reduces the risks of screen failure and deterioration in well
productivity, lowers the risk of gravel pack failure, increases completion longevity, and enhances completion
reliability.
