Topic: Seating Arrangement

JTS Institute

Seating Arrangement
30 out of 32 Bank PO Exams held in the last 5 years had 5 to 6 questions each based on Seating
Arrangement. Therefore it is a MUST study topic and it is almost certain that, once you learn the
technique of solving these questions you can be assured of 5 or 6 marks in any bank PO exam.
In Seating Arrangement questions, we are generally asked to arrange a group of people according to
the given conditions. Given below is a model question, followed by its solutions in very simple methods. This example will give you a very clear idea on how to solve Seating Arrangement questions.

Example-1
Example
Directions : Study the following information
carefully and answer the questions given
below:
A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H are sitting around a
circle facing the centre. H is fourth to the left of B
and second to the right of F. A is third to the left of
C, who is not an immediate neighbour of F. G is
second to the left of A. D is second to the right of
E.
Questions :
1. Who is on the immediate right of F?
(1) H
(2) A
(3) G
(4) Data inadequate
(5) None of these
2. Who is third to the left of A?
(1) C
(2) F
(3) B
(4) Data inadequate
(5) None of these

3. In which of the following pairs is the first person sitting on the immediate left of the second
person?
(1) EH
(2) CE
(3) AF
(4) DB
(5) None of these
4. Which of the following pairs represents the immediate neighbours of E?
(1) DH
(2) HC
(3) CA
(4) Data inadequate
(5) None of these
5. Who is on the immediate right of H?
(1) E
(2) C
(3) H
(4) Data inadequate
(5) None of these
6. Who is on the immediate right of B?
(1) D
(2) E
(3) F
(4) Data inadequate
(5) None of these

How to Solve this Question ?

Let us see how to solve the above question: It is difficult to solve the circular-arrangement
without drawing a diagram. Therefore the first thing to do is draw a diagram (here, it is a circle)
STEP-1. Since there are 8 people sitting, let us
draw a circle with 8 points/seats/people. All are
facing to the center

STEP-2. From the information we know that H

is fourth to the left of B and second to the right
of F. Let us mark accordingly

>

Note that, since everyone is facing to the center

of the table, to the right = anti-clockwise and to
the left = clock wise

H
These 3 seats are confirmed and therefore let us
draw a circle on them.

JTS Institute

JTS Institute
STEP-3 Our next clue is that A is third to the left of C, who is not an immediate neighbour of F.

B
>

Since C is not an immediate neighbour of

F, C has to sit in one of these 3 seats

>

>

>

F >

C
Since A is third to the left of C, this is
the only place for C

>
>

>

And this is the place of A

STEP-4. Let us take the last 2 clues, G is second to the left of A. D is second to the right of E.

B
>

>

>

D
>

F >
>

C
Only 2 seats are left and D is second to the
right of E. Naturally their seats has to be
like this

>

>

G is second to the left of A, obviously this is

the seat of G

ANSWERS

STEP-5. Now we have the seating positions of

all the 8 people and we can answer the questions

Write down your answers here

JTS Institute

Cross check your answers with the correct

answers given below:
1. 2: A is on the immediate right of F
2. 3:B is third to the left of A
3. 4: D is sitting immediate left of B
4. 2: H and C are immediate neighbours of E
5. 1: E is the immediate right of H
6. 5: G is the immediate right of B

I always make
mistakes in assuming left and right
of the seat. What to
do?
Ans: Many people
have the same problem. Solution is: When
you want to mark, say for example B is second
to the right of A...Imagine you are sitting in the
place of A facing the center of the table and
mark the second seat. Always imagine like this
and find out the correct position on left or right.

Example-2
Example
Now let us discuss with another type of Seating Arrangement. Infact most of the Bank PO exams
have asked this type of Seating Arrangement. Here the difference is that, alongwith the people we
need to identify their profession also. See the example given below:
Directions : Study the following information
carefully and answer the questions given
below:
Eight people S, R, N, L, M, T, O and P are sitting
in a circle facing the centre. All eight belong to
different professions - reporter, doctor, cricketer,
teacher, accountant, shopkeeper, painter and
supervisor. They are not necessarily seated in the
mentioned order.
M is sitting third to the left of O. The doctor is to
the immediate right of M and M is not a reporter.
R is sitting fourth to the right of P. Neither R nor P
is an immediate neighbour of M. T is a teacher
and is sitting third to the right of the doctor. The
shopkeeper is sitting second to the left of the
teacher. The painter is sitting second to the left of
M. S is the cricketer is sitting exactly between T
and P. The accountant is sitting second to the
right of the cricketer. N is sitting third to the left of
T.
Questions:
1. Who amongst the following is a reporter?
(1) O
(2) L
(3) N
(4) R
(5) None of these
2. What is Ss position with respect to R?
1) Third to the right
2) Second to the right
3) Third to the left
4) Second to the left
5) Fourth to the right

3. How many people are sitting between P and N

when counted in an anti-clockwise direction from
N?
(1) One
(2) Two
(3) Three
(4) Four
(5) None
4. Four of the following five pairs are alike in a
certain way based on their positions in the above
arrangement and so form a group. Which of the
following does not belong to the group ?
1) Teacher - Painter
2) Supervisor - Shopkeeper
3) Cricketer - Reporter
4) Doctor - Accountant
5) Shopkeeper - Doctor
5) Which one of the following statements is false
according to the above mentioned arrangement
?
1) N is to the immediate right of supervisor
2) The cricketer is third to the right of the shopkeeper
3) The doctor is sitting exactly between the supervisor and the accountant
4) L is neither a teacher nor a supervisor
5) There are only three people between S and N

How to Solve this Question ?

STEP-1. Draw a circle with 8 seats, and Mark the first 2 positive clues, that is, M is sitting third to
the left of O. The doctor is to the immediate right of M
M

>

Doctor

Place M here

>

>

>

>
O >

M is sitting third to the left of O. Therefore this

is the seat of O
The doctor is to the immediate right of M

>

>

Bank PO Exam Work Book

JTS Institute

JTS Institute

>

STEP-2. The clue M is not a reporter should not be taken now, due to insufficent data. Let us take
the next clue, that is R is sitting fourth to the right of P. Neither R nor P is an immediate neighbour
of M.
M
Doctor

>

>

R or P can only come to either of these 2 seats

>

R/P >
O >

R/P

>
>

I assumed it is
his/her seat.
Never assume a
seat to be
filled without
enough data.
Be ready to ignore
clues.

STEP -3. Let us mark the next 3 clues here

M

T is a teacher and is sitting third to

the right of the doctor.

>

Doctor

>

>
shopkeeper
R/P >

painter
R/P

>

O >

The shopkeeper is sitting second

to the left of the teacher.

>
>

The painter is sitting second to the left of M.

T
Teacher

STEP -4. Take the next clue: S is the cricketer is sitting exactly between T and P.
M

>

Doctor

>

>
shopkeeper
R
>

painter
P

>

O >

>

>

T
Teacher

JTS Institute

S & P cannot sit to the left of T because O is

already sitting there. Thus P has to be the
painter, sitting here

S
Cricketer

S the cricketer is sitting exactly between T

and P
Since P is the painter, we can conclude
that R is the shop keeper

Bank PO Exams -Work Book

JTS Institute

>

STEP -5. Take the next clue:The accountant is sitting second to the right of the cricketer. N is
sitting third to the left of T.
supervisor
The accountant is sitting second to the right of
L
M
the cricketer.
accountant
Doctor
N >
N is sitting third to the left of T.
shopkeeper
painter
P
R
>
Since L is the only remaining person, he has to
be the accountant

>

>

>

>

O >
reporter

S
Cricketer

T
Teacher

Since the earlier clue says M is not a reporter,

we can conclude that O is the reporter and M is
the supervisor

Now we have got the seating position of everyone and we can answer all the questions
4. How many people are sitting between P and N
when counted in an anti-clockwise direction from
N?
(1) One
(2) Two
(3) Three
(4) Four
(5) None

1. Who among the following is a reporter?

(1) O
(2) L
(3) N
(4) R
(5) None of these
2. What is Ss position with respect to R?
1) Third to the right
2) Second to the right
3) Third to the left
4) Second to the left
5) Fourth to the right

5) Which one of the following statements is false

according to the above mentioned arrangement
?
1) N is to the immediate right of supervisor
2) The cricketer is third to the right of the shopkeeper
3) The doctor is sitting exactly between the supervisor and the accountant
4) L is neither a teacher nor a supervisor
5) There are only three people between S and N

3. Four of the following five pairs are alike in a

certain way based on their positions in the above
arrangement and so form a group. Which of the
following does not belong to the group ?
1) Teacher - Painter
2) Supervisor - Shopkeeper
3) Cricketer - Reporter
4) Doctor - Accountant
5) Shopkeeper - Doctor
