Walker Merryman, Director of Communications and


Assistant to the President will discuss the purpose
of the College and describe the role of the
Institute in representing the industry in the con-
troversies surrounding tobacco . Highlighting the
historic importance of tobacco to-this nation's
development, Mr . Merryman will introduce a recording
of a well-known personality's impressions of tobacco's
commercial origins .

9 :15 a .m . SMOKING & HEALTH

Mr . Merryman will present the film "The Answers We


Seek" . Following the film, Mr . Merryman will
introduce George E . Schafer, M .D ., medical consultant
to the Institute . Dr . Schafer will discuss smoking
and health and the public smoking issue with an
opportunity for questions and answers .

10 :45 a .m . THE CURRENT LEGAL CLIMATE

Bernard V . O'Neill, from the law firm of Shook, Hardy &


Bacon`in Kansas City, Missouri, will discuss legal
issues facing the industry and answer questions .

11 :20 a .m . Mr . Merryman-wi1Z outline the communications tools


such as publications, media relations, advertising,
and the spokesman program . His presentation will
include videotaped excerpts of television programs
on which TI spokesmen have appeared .

1 :15 p .m . FRIENDS AND FOES

Mr . Merryman will detail how'one of the industry's most


outspoken foes, The American Lung Association,
collects and spends its funds . Mr . Merryman will
also present some videotaped examples of how some
radio and television personalities feel about
defending the right of freedom of choice .

1 :45 p .m . Ralph Tive, who represents the Institute in the


state of Pennsylvania, and Clark Martin, who
represents the Institute in the state of New
Jersey, will explain how lobbying is conducted
and what individual TAN members can do to help
when the industry is faced with legislative,
regulatory or ballot initiative concerns .

2 :20 p .m . TAN - THE TOBACCO ACTION NETWORK

Michael Kerrigan, Director of Field Activities for


the Northern Zone, and Area Manager Richard Scanlan_
will provide an update on the industry's grassroots
lobbying effort .

2 :45 p . BREAK

2 :55 p .m . SPREADING THE WORD - WHAT WE CAN SAY

Mr . Merryman using his road tested "Socratic


Method," will attempt to help participants develop
their own responses to the most frequently asked
questions about smoking and health, public smoking,
and other controversies .

3 : 30 p . CONCLUDING DISCUSSION

All members-of the Tobacco College faculty will


be available for questions on topics not fully
answered during the formal presentations .
