Cross Examination:
My opponent is arguing that the government must aid these children
because of Moral Obligation when it is the governments moral obligation to
aid its own citizens first, before any other illegal aliens. Numbers illuminate the
fact that many illegal immigrants join gangs to have a sense of security in their
new country. How do you expect our nation to control the increasing crime
rate and increased gang violence that is a direct cause of illegal immigration?
Furthermore, if something violent were to happen to American citizen/citizens
because of the governments nonchalant policy on illegal immigration, what
would you say to justify the governments policy on immigration the family or
families of the victim?
Secondly, facts have shown that illegal immigrants are taking jobs that
Americans without work could potentially have. What steps could the US go
through in order to ensure a job to the Americans whose jobs have been
hijacked by illegal aliens?
Californias healthcare system is on the brink of collapse due to the
increased number of illegal immigrants who cannot pay their hospital bills. Also,
California is ranked last in the ratio of emergency rooms to people, because
hospitals cannot stay open due to massive amounts of debt. Since the US is
already struggling financially to maintain its hospitals and now since they are
hammered with the extra costs of the illegal immigrants, how can the still
remaining Californian hospitals combat this epidemic?
Constructive:
Hello, my name is Justin Merritt and I would like to thank you for the
opportunity to speak on behalf of the negative. The words, Illegal Immigrant,
have recently been expunged from many Americans vocabularies due to the
negative connotation surrounding those words. These words have negative
connotation because there should be a negative feeling associated with them.
Illegal Immigration is illegal, period. There is no way to get around the fact that it
is against the law to cross a countries borders without permission. A nation that
cannot control its borders is not a nation. It is because I agree with Ronald
Reagan, 40th president of the United States in the position that illegal immigration
no matter who is involved is against the law and should not be tolerated, that I
feel compelled to negate todays resolution: The United States should aid the
child immigrants crossing the border from Mexico to the US.

For clarification in todays round, I offer the following counter definitions:

Deport to force a person who is not a citizen to leave the country

Incarceration - to put someone in prison

Both definitions are derived from the Merriam Webster online dictionary.
The highest value within todays round is Justice. Justice is defined from
the Merriam Webster online dictionary as the process or result of using laws to
fairly judge and punish criminals. Justice is most important in todays round
because a nation cannot survive without the creation and enforcement of the
law, and no one, whether be a man, woman, or child, is above the law. The
best criterion for evaluating the resolution is the abidance of established laws,
which is defined by Merriam Websters online dictionary as the endurance of the
laws of one nation, when race, age, gender, or religion is not a factor. The
abidance of laws best achieves my value of justice because it is an equality
based guideline without prejudice towards any nation or group of people.
In negating the resolution, I offer my first contention: Illegal Immigrants
take jobs away from American citizens. A study done by the US Bureau of Labor
and Statistics in 2010 showed that illegal immigrants gained over one million jobs
in the last two years, with that number expected to grow because of the
increased number of illegal aliens. The study dug deeper and discovered that a
million employed illegal immigrants was just a portion of the 7.7 million employed
illegal immigrants in the United States. All of these illegal immigrants that have
jobs If the United States allows these illegal immigrants to remain within our
borders, we are conveying the message that breaking the law is acceptable,
giving a license to even more minors who are crossing the border, because they
know nothing will happen to them if they succeed. This provides an injustice to
the citizens whose jobs were taken, and encourages more minors to attempt to
cross the border, and break the law.
In negating the resolution, I offer my second contention: Illegal aliens
drastically damage the US economy. Every year, the US spends billions of dollars
on education, healthcare, and incarceration. This argument is divided into
three parts; first is education. The US Census Bureau calculated the cost of
educating illegal children to be a striking $12 billion annually. If the minors
crossing the border were to be sent back to their homes, the government
funding could be used to advance something more important. Secondly, the
healthcare systems collapse in California. Thanks to illegal immigration,

Californias already overstretched healthcare system is on the verge of collapse.

This sudden downfall is derived from the illegal immigrants not paying the
medical bills. Because the hospitals cannot support themselves, many have shut
down, leaving American citizens in need of medical treatment. Moreover,
California is ranked last out of all 50 states on the number of emergency rooms
per citizen. If this trend continues, California will not be able to provide
adequate healthcare for it its citizens, let alone illegal immigrants. My third point
under this topic is incarceration. Illegal immigrants make up over 30% of the
population in federal and state prisons, costing US taxpayers $1.6 billion
annually. That money comes out of the pockets of US citizens, because illegal
immigrants dont pay taxes. It is not fair, nor just to ask American taxpayers to
pay for people in schools, hospitals, or prisons, who broke the law to get to this
country and jeopardize our basic needs.
In negating the resolution, I offer my third contention: Illegal immigration
leads to gang violence. The increasing number of illegal immigrants entering the
US has in turn caused a spike in gang membership according to the US Census
Bureau. A gang study in Virginia reinforced this fact. The study showed that 90%
of the gangs in V.A. were made up of illegal immigrants. The more children this
country lets within its borders, the more number of gangs will appear on the
radar. When juxtaposing gang violence and drug cartels, there is a noticeable
similarity in the fact that the majority of both are run or operated by illegal
immigrants. Approximately 28,000 Americans have died because of drug
cartels alone since 2007, not to mention the number of deaths from gangs.
Drug cartels make a good portion of their earnings by trafficking illegal
immigrants across the border; 75 underground tunnels have been discovered
since 2010, connecting Mexico to the US. The drug cartels run mostly by illegal
immigrants are a growing danger to American citizens because of the violent,
law-breaking tendencies they posses, both injustices to American citizens.
In negating my resolution, I offer my fourth contention: Illegal immigrants
put a massive strain on US social services. A study by the center for immigration
studies estimated that 57% of immigrant households use welfare. Over 50% of US
citizens already receive government handouts, so adding the illegal immigrants
to the mix will strain social services even more. Also, the food stamps that illegal
immigrants receive are being abused. Many illegal immigrants are trading their
food stamps for drug money, which is an abuse of taxpayer money as well.
