I am an award-winning journalist with nearly a decade of professional experience, including six years as a data
reporter at a metro daily newspaper. I taught a web development course at the University of Memphis for the
past four years. I brew a fine beer.

I analyze databases and use GIS mapping for investigative stories and develop
interactive search tools and visualizations for the web.
Developed a new online story budgeting tool and helped transition our website
CMS from Django/Ellington to EndPlay.
Winner of the 2012 Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award
for investigative reporting for Cash Crop, an investigation of an oft-abused tax
subsidy program for farmland.

Assisted other reporters with their projects, developed a searchable database for
the GNS Intranet and other newsroom tasks.

Compiled a new database for the library and helped update the handbook for
Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data analysis and reporting.

Wrote a Five Ideas column, in which the newspaper solicits reader input and
debate about controversial issues covered that week.
Mentored student reporters on the higher education and faith beats to develop
their reporting and writing skills while an assistant city editor (May 07-Aug. 07).
Helped with story idea generation and attended budget and beat meetings. Assigned
breaking news stories and edited stories from each beat for the upcoming edition.
Posted news stories on the Web, and issued breaking-news bursts on the Web
and to subscribers cell phones.
Held one copy editing shift per week for five months.
Kept a weekly blog about my reporting activities and our ongoing discussions
about how to produce higher quality journalism.

I developed this homebrew and beer news website with two friends with whom
I brew beer. We keep the Memphis area appraised of beer-related events and blog
about homebrewing. The site was featured in the book Food Lovers' Guide to
Memphis.

For my Eagle Scout project, I extended a popular mountain bike trail and
designed and constructed a proper switchback to prevent erosion and silt-related
problems downstream. The switchback is still effective more than a decade later.
