Sound protection in building construction
Why is sound protection so important today ?
Environmental quality is increasingly endangered by the burden of unwanted noise. It is becoming more and more important in
one's own home. The high value placed on sound protection is apparent in the study by the concrete information centre made in
Cologne in 1994, which found that clients placed sound protection second only to fire protection as an indispensible construction
element.
The sound protection quality of a home is determined by the lowest levels of sound protection in the materials chosen. In particular impact noise reverberation from stairways is found to be especially inconvenient and troublesome.

Important impact noise reverberation technical terminology.

Airborne sound: is the name given to noise spread through the air. Every reverberation sensed aurally is percieved as airborne
sound.
Structure-borne sound: noise spread by being reflected from dense materials. Structure-borne sound bounces off the surface of
such materials and is spread, echo-like through the structure.
Impact noise sound: is the effect caused by footsteps or through reverberation from any hammer-like action, or by impact onceilings and floors. Impact noise then radiates through the structure as airborne sound.
Impact noise level L: is the calculated impact noise level measured.
Norm impact noise level L n : is the measurement taken from a sound absorbent area of 10 m 2 normalised impact noise sound
level caused by a hammer/impact action.
Frequence dependancy: Relevant to construction accoustics is the frequency range from 100 Hz to 3150 Hz. When a structure
based accoustic measurement is made sixteen single frequency's in this range are individually measured. From these 16 values a
norm in the form of a single all-encompassing value is calculated.
Flank resonance: when the ascertained level can not be determined by testing the
cent materials then an apostrophe is annexed to the measurement value given, e.g.
measured on site whereas material measurements made under laboratory conditions

actual building materials or from the adjaL n . Broadly speaking, flank resonance is
cannot take such phenomena into account.

Evaluated norm impact noise level L n,w : from the 16 individual frequency measurements L n the evaluated norm is created by
using a relative curve to produce a mean average value represented by the letters L n,w (see diagrams 1 and 2) The evaluated
norm impact noise level is then used as a measuring unit to describe the impact noise reduction capability of building/construction materials.

SCHCK TRONSOLE

Equivalent value norm impact noise level L n,w,eq : These measurements are used to describe the reaction of non-suppressed stairway carcasses and is detailed in annex 1 of DIN 4109 with tables showing the results attained in variable stairway applications.
Impact noise improvement measure L w : The impact noise suppression/impedant effect of floor slab coverings (floating floor
screeds, suspended floors etc.) is designated by the symbol L w . Essentialy this value represents the difference between norm
impact noise level L n,w without impact noise suppression and the corresponding value with impact noise suppression:
L w L n,w (without TSD) L n,w (with TSD)
The impact noise suppression effect increases in direct relation to the rise of the value L w . The calculated value of the impact
noise improvement measure L w,R is the designateable evidence of the impact noise suppression/impedance factor. L w,R is
determined by the laboratory tested value, added to which is a predetermined safety margin (rate action factor).
The calculable value of the determined norm impact noise level L n,w,R is the designated term used to describe the mathematically measureable impact noise behaviour of stairways and floor slabs. L n,w,R can be worked out with the aid of annex 1 to DIN
4109 table of calculations. Should the planned project be equivalent to the example given in annexe 1, then L n,w,R can be directly
calculated according to the tables. Otherwise the factor L n,w,R can be determined by using the formulae shown as an example of
the calculations necessary for your project.

Thus: L n,w can be seen on the projected relative curve at the 500 Hz point.

Impact noise suppression in stairways
Standards relevant to impact noise suppression in stairways
DIN 4109: DIN 4109 lays down standards and necessary measures as regards noise protection specifically relating to the protection of living environments from the encumberance of sound incursions which emanate from adjoining living/work areas. The
standard DIN 4109 has become, since its inception, the accepted standard for the highest regulatory authorities with regard to
the building/constructon industry in Germany. The obligations laid down within DIN 4109 are protective measures which safeguard the legal rights of affected parties as regards the health and safety regulations and provide reference to standards. This
does not in itself however, ensure qualitative effficient noise protection. The requisite obligations are, therefore, often used as
minimum standards to be obtained by the regulatory authorities.
Appendix 2 for DIN 4109: because the (minimum) standards laid down in DIN 4109 cannot in themselves ensure noise reduction appendix 2 contains recommendations which, if followed lead to pronounced minimisation of burdensome sound resonance
(sic: suggestions for increased noise protection). Particularly pertinent are the suggestions contained within the section dealing
with increased noise protection in stairways, the aforementioned recommendations have manifestly higher minimum acceptance
levels than those contained within DIN 4109 itself (see table 1). Compliance of and adherence to the standards applicable to
noise protection is not legally pre-enforceable and cannot, therefore guarantee in-built protection. In order to avoid misunderstanding and in the interest of clarity, it is recommended that an agreed level of increased noise protection should be agreed
upon beforehand between the contractor and the client.
VDI 4100: is supplement to appendix 2 of DIN 4109 in which can be found further orientation for clients and planners.
Published in 1994 the VDI guideline 4100 "noise protection applicable to dwellings-criteria for planning and appraisal" has
helpful guidelines for agreement procedures on noise protection for interested parties, i.e. Clients SSt I, contractors, prospective
buyers and tenants. VDI 4100 draws distinctions between 3 different levels of noise protection (SSt I); the standards contained
within the first level are identical to those contained within DIN 4109. At the next level SSt II are suggestions for attaining noticeably higher levels of noise protection improvement than those contained in DIN 4109 appendix 2. SSt III contains the highest
quality level, compliance with which therefore, guarantees a measurable adherence to the environmental (noise) protection act.
Technology stand to date: under civil law - independant of the legal guidelines and recommendations apertaining to noise protection contained in DIN 4109, a code of practice exists which provides a minimum level of noise protection " A reasonable level
of acceptability" which, lays down an attainable level of acceptability in exceedance of the minimum recommendations in DIN
4109. Because of the difficulty involved in apportioning the laid down measures in individual situations, it is highly recommended that a binding agreement should be made in advance of the construction stage between all interested parties along the lines
of themeasures to be found in appendix 2 to DIN 4109 or the guidelines in VDI 4100.

SCHCK TRONSOLE

Calculable proof of compliance with standards relating to stairways:

The standards are taken to be met when the equation for the measured impact noise level L n,w,R is as follows:
L n,w,R req. L n,w

The value of L n,w,R can be worked out either by using the tables of examples found in appendix 1 of DIN 4109 or in cases
where floating screed, suspended flooring or other sound impedant methods are planned, by using the following equation :
L n,w,R = L n,w,eq,R L w,R

L n,w,eq,R represents the impact noise reaction of stairway carcasses, L w,R is the assigned value of the noise suppression effect
when apportioned to the relevant floor covering method.
With the above equation it is possible to extrapolate the actual noise impedance performance of the finished product whilst in
the planning stage.

Verification using a suitability projection test.

For (stair) construction components not included in appendix 1, it is possible by means of a suitability projection test (EP) to
prove the sound impedance factor. Providing the individual components are subject to a special components test in chosen buildings. The standards are deemed to be complied with when the measured level of the individual components L n,w,B in three
buildings are:
L n,w,B req. L n,w

Verification using an on-site test.

This verification takes the form of a measurement on-site when the project is at the handover stage as verification of compliance
with standards prior to client move-in. To be measured are the relative stairways with the value L n,w . Standards are deemed to
be complied with when the measurements are as follows:
L n,w req. L n,w

Impact noise suppression with Schck Tronsole
Measuring the impact noise suppression effect of the Schck Tronsole
While there is, at the moment, no standard procedure to prove the effectiveness of noise impedance construction units in stairways, (such as the Schck Tronsole ) there is a wealth of test results in the official standards (DIN 4109, DIN 52 210) based on
clinical tests.
As an analogy the measurement of impact noise suppression/impedant slab coverings the impact noise improvement measurement
L* w of the Schck Tronsole was carried out in clinical tests: A measuring unit was placed in the partition wall of a test rig to
gauge the effect of the noise levels when stair treads and landings where fitted with the stair element and the Schck Tronsole .
The difference in the level registered can then be assigned the symbol L* w i.e. the improvement attained by using the Schck
Tronsole .
L* w = L n,w (stare) L n,w (with Schck Tronsole )
The star is then the difference (higher than the normal attainable result) of the calculated impact noise improvement measurement L w,R results gathered by testing slab coverings without the Schck items.

The attainable noise suppression levels in stairways using the Schck Tronsole
Where stairways were fitted with the Scck Tronsole element the attainable effects are dependant upon the L* w performance
of the Schck element used and from the impact noise reverberation ability of the stair elements, shown here as the value
L n,w,eq,R .
As an analogy to the calculations found within appendix 1 of DIN 4109 for stair ways fitted with noise impedant facing/coating
elements, it is possible to calculate the attainable noise reduction target for the Schck Tronsole in the planning stage.
L n,w,R = L n,w,eq,R L* w
The impact noise technical behaviour of the stair carcass construction characterised as the value L n,w,eq,R can therefore be taken as
a working model of the example given in annex 1 of DIN 4109.

Mistakes occur regularly between the designing stage and

the on-site fitting of landing slabs and flights. These mistakes can lead to unwanted "accoustic bridges" resulting from
concrete, mortar, plaster or surfacing materials forming an
accoustic bridge or by operator errors at the fitting stage.
The serious consequences of accoustic bridge formation are
shown in the diagram on this page. A worst case scenario
has been prepared in the following way. A flight, fitted with
the correct noise suppresion package, is then measured for
impact noise behaviour to provide a norm. Then the most
common mistakes are built in Diag. 3, i.e a small stone/
pebble is placed under the stair carcass (to represent a case
where the landing inset is not properly cleaned/swept prior
to siting). This then creates an effect known as a horizontal
accoustic bridge. In the next case a steel wedge is forced
into the vertical joint where the stairs are hung on the landing, thus creating a vertical accoustic bridge. In each case
the stairs are then measured and the results shown in the
table here. As you can see, when a horizontal accoustic bridge
was formed the deterioration of noise efficiency was 7 dB
and in the case of the vertical accoustic bridge 12 dB. This
results in a rule of thumb by means of which we can say
that the formation of a single accoustic bridge means that a
deteriorisation of noise suppression can be expected; the
result of which is an increase of 10 dB.

The Schck Tronsole as a ready to build pre-finished complete system

Schck Tronsole noise suppression elements not only guarantee optimal pre-agreed impact noise suppression, but meet
the following exacting demands of the construction industry:

Type conformance: with the type conformance assurance of the Schck Tronsole the conformance with existing standards
is guaranteed. A higher level of designing safety also lightens the load of planners as regards design verification.
Fire safety: Schck Tronsoles which determine the safety stand of stair construction, are in the F 90 fire resistance classification. Evidence of this is the governmental fire safety technology certificate.
Optimal impact noise protection: the noise suppression effect of Schck Tronsoles is individually tailored to each project,
thereby guaranteeing best possible noise suppression. The proof of this comes in the form of an accoustic technical certificate.
Elimination of accoustic bridge during fitting: Schck Tronsoles make fitting trouble free, especially when used in conjunction with Schck compound joints such as type PL even at critical joints. The danger of joint contamination or the formation of solid joints is reduced to a minimum.
Corrosion protection: the load bearing reinforcement elements contained within the Schck Tronsole are constructed of
stainless steel in all open joint areas. Thereby guaranteeing the highest level of corrosion protection.
Higher level of creative freedom: because of the problem solving capability and the availability of multi-tasking variations
of the Schck Tronsole range, designers have less constraints on their freedom to create, without sacrificing sound
suppression standards.

Fire safety in stairways
In General
The construction industry standards as regards fire safety in buildings especially flights/landings and hallways are laid down
in the County building regulations (in Germany known as LBO's).

Fire safety requirements applicable to stair coverings

Generally speaking floorcoverings in stairways must be made from non-flammable materials. (Class A building materials). Flammable building materials (Class B) e.g. Linoleum or carpet are defined in building regulations (MBO) statute 32 as not permissable.

Fire safety requirements applicable to stairs

According to statute 31 of the MBO every building must provide an emergency stairway. An emergency stairway is one which
serves as an emergency exit/access. Emergency stairs are covered by fire safety regulations (see the accompanying table). Every
floor/storey (with the exception of the ground floor) must provide access to this stairway. The stairway must also be a distinct
separate room.

If the carcass stairway construction has the classification F 90-A then it remains so classified when the above-mentioned Schck

The Schck Tronsole types F,B and R have no influence over the design security of the stairway in case of fire. A certification in
a fire resistance class on the basis of the internal element is, therefore, not possible. The fire resistance classification of the
stairway is guaranteed by comprehensive concrete cover of the relative construction elements.

Advisory notes on fitting

The operative range of the type T Schck Tronsole is solely for use where stairs and landings are in predominately minor use
and where the personnel traffic is equally distributed in conformance with DIN 1055.
For the butting/adjoining reinforcement top and bottom of the Schck Tronsole a design verification certificate is necessary.
This is to ascertain and determine the correct bedding of the stair carcass because the Schck Tronsole type T is only
answerable for the horizontal and shear/transverse forces parallel to the joint of the stair/landing.
The upper and lower reinforcement is to be fitted as tight as possible to the Schck Tronsole with the required concrete
coverage. Thereby enabling the stair side of the spacing rod with 3 cm concrete coverage to be used as a casting-on point
The sides of the landing should be surround-treated as in pos. 1 .
The long reinforcement which is carried over into the bedding position (pos. 3 & 4 ) is to be laid directly from the Schck
Tronsole and sufficiently anchored at its upper end. At both ends of the stairs a correctly dimensioned reinforcement hanger
must be formed, of sufficient design capability to bear the shear/transverse forces. This is normally given by the continuation
of the lower butting/adjoining reinforcement.
In areas where structural integrity zones adjoin the shear/transverse force is to be kept to ( 02 ) in accordance with DIN
1045 table 13 line 2 .

The fixing position of the tread sleeve of the

Schck Tronsole type QW should be marked on
the formwork of the flight to be prefabricated
and a hole drilled as required (drilling P 12)
Push the flight sleeve over the reusable mounting and tighten by means of the tension screw.
By using a spacer it is possible to vary the
thickness of the formwork wall from 5 - 40 mm.
To prevent rotation of the sleeve during the concrete pour a dowel in the reusable mounting can
be screwed outwards to create a stabiliser, for
which a ( P 6) hole should be drilled through
the formwork.
In situ reinforcing should now be fitted, along
with flight reinforcing. The concrete cover should
be as required, (for F 90 middle line spacing of
in situ reinforcement u 35 mm).
Pour concrete, (standard C 35) taking special
care that the concrete surrounding Schck
Tronsole type QW is thoroughly compacted.
Before dismantling formwork all tension screws
should be loosened and removed. Then dismantle
formwork.
Remove reusable mounting and use (as directed
above) for the next pour.
Before transporting the finished flight to the
client attach the Schck Tronsole type QW and
the fire safety collar.

QW

Fixing with mounting cube

Mark the final fixing position of the Schck
Tronsole type QW on the formwork and nail the
mounting cube in place.
Slide the flight sleeve over the (reusable) mounting cube.
In-situ reinforcement can now be fitted and,
when ready, the concrete poured
Dismantle the formwork, remove the fixing
nails.
Should the mounting cube stick in the sleeve it
can be removed by pulling, using the built in
dowel.

Important:
Check at every stage that an accoustic
bridge has not been formed.

Advice
When connecting the landing slab with the Schck Tronsole type V, a reinforcement cradle capable of taking the max. permissable shear force must be used. This is achieved by running the lower landing slab reinforcement rods at the slab edge up
into the upper reinforcement at the adjoining joint and anchoring securely.
The, at the moment, free standing, plate edges must be held in place with on site constructed reinforcing (stirrups).

Installation instructions

SCHCK TRONSOLE

Fixing in the main landing slab

floor slab

main landing

After assembling the formwork fix the type V Tronsole in

place.
In order to attain the maximum noise suppression effect
the Tronsole should be spaced 2 cm from the stair wall.

20

Fit the on site reinforcement according to the designing

engineers specifications
At the connection of the type V the whole lower reinforcement must be anchored firmly to the upper side.

Complete lower landing reinforcement must be bent upwards

The reinforcing rods on both sides should be slid onto the

in-situ reinforcing.

Fixing in intermediate landing

Build the Tronsole type V into the wall and bed in mortar.
Fit the on-site reinforcement to the designing engineers
specifications.
Where the Tronsole type V is to sit, the entire lower reinforcement must be bent up to, and firmly anchored onto
the upper reinforcement.

intermediate landing

Slide the rods on both sides of the type V Tronsole onto

the reinforcement rollers.
After assembling the formwork form a running/continuous
joint between the stairs and the stair wall using the Schck

Measurements/calculations
Calculating the permissable shear force: permissable Q
The Schck Tronsole type AZT by its nature produces a fixed starting point for calculation, i. e. where the landing is
connecting to the wall.
Maximum permissable shear force can be concretely broken down so: + 53 kN/ 10 kN
Perm. Q is reached by the following equation:
perm. Q = 011 1 u h m/1,4 53 kN ( 10 kN)
011 : shear stress DIN 1045
(C 25: 011 = 0,05 kN/cm2, C 35: 011 = 0,06 kN/cm2)
1 = 1,3 1,4

g : (coefficient for BSt 500)

g = 0,5 / h m (A sx / b y + A sy / b x) 1,25 % (C 25)

i. e. 1,50 % (C 35) (existing reinforcement content)

A sx : reinforcement content towards x in zone b y in cm 2

A sy : reinforcement content towards y in zone b x in cm 2
u:

circumference of the critical curve zone in cm

h m: average statistic effective depth of landing slab in cm

b x : in the reinforcement zone A sy , b x = 1,8 cm + 1,5 h m

Unfold the framework and fit to the lip of the Tronsole .

The connecting framework enables the Schck joint sheet
type PL to be easily fitted thereby ensuring that an accoustic bridge is not formed.

3
Apply the joint sheet in an unbroken running joint against
the stairwall. To avoid forming accoustic bridges all joints
should be sealed with adhesive tape.

AZT

Schck load bearing element type AZT must now be correctly inserted into the connection port. Landing reinforcement
according to the designing engineers requirements can now
be fitted.
Pour the landing concrete carefully and ensure it is correctly compacted, especially when pouring near the console.
Important:
At every stage of construction ensure that no accoustic
bridges are formed!

joint sheet to be easily fitted thereby ensuring that an
accoustic bridge is not formed.

3
Apply the joint sheet in an unbroken running joint against
the stairwall. To avoid forming accoustic bridges all joints
should be sealed with adhesive tape.
Schck load bearing element type AZ must now be correctly
inserted into the connection port. Landing slab reinforcement according to the designing engineers requirements
can now be fitted.

AZ

Pour the landing concrete carefully and ensure it is correctly compacted, especially when pouring near the console.
