CHURCH MINISTRY EXPERIENCE

Christ Episcopal Church Winchester, Virginia 2008-present
• My wife and I mentored high school students through the process of selecting, rehearsing,
and leading music for a youth-lead blended worship service—the first at Christ Church in
many years.
• I served as a singer, percussionist, guest conductor, and guest organist for the adult choir,
and as frequent guest pianist and rehearsal coach for Cantamus (jr./sr. high girls choir) and
the Alleluia Singers (the children's choir).
• My wife and I offered mini-concerts on specific topics to enrich adult study groups
• As co-founder (with my wife) of Third Place Winchester, I help plan, publicize, and host
monthly social gatherings for students and young professionals in their 20s and 30s,
combating the epidemic of young adult loneliness with Christ-like hospitality.
• I was elected to the vestry and served in the office of register (secretary), took a leadership
role in revamping electronic/print communication strategies on the communications
committee, and participated as a volunteer youth group leader on a weekly basis.
Grace United Methodist Church Middletown, VA October 2008 - February 2009
As Interim Music Director, I conducted, selected music, and led rehearsals for the adult choir.
I coordinated with the youth choir for joint efforts, substituted on organ and piano, and
collaborated with my wife to lead the handbell choir. At Christmas time, I coordinated a
successful annual Christmas concert, continuing a beloved tradition through the transition
from my predecessor to my successor.
Calvary Baptist Church State College, PA 2006-2007
• I served with a group of rotating worship teams for a blended/contemporary Sunday service:
◦ First as a pianist/keyboardist/auxiliary-percussionist
◦ Later as a worship team leader with responsibility for music selection and direction.
DAVI D E. CH ÁVE Z • APRI L 201 1

• I served as pianist for the adult choir on multiple occasions, and as a substitute pianist and
organist at the traditional service.
Multiple congregations at and around Penn State University, University Park, PA 2001-2006
• I was the keyboardist and frequent chord chart transcriptionist for an ecumenical band which
lead worship in various settings on campus and around State College.
• I became a regular pianist for a 9pm Sunday campus service in a blended style.
• I served a pivotal role in a growing traditional and contemporary music ministry and new
youth/children's ministry at St. Peter's UCC, including:
◦ Leading worship during a mission trip to México, in a foreign language (Spanish) and a
humble setting (dirt floor, portable keyboard, no sound system).
◦ Leading contemporary worship music during youth activities and playing auxiliary piano
and substitute organ during the traditional Sunday service.
◦ Coaching and equipping young musicians for contemporary worship music participation,
special service music, and music for the annual Christmas pageant.
◦ Writing arrangements, transcriptions, and new compositions
◦ Serving as the adult choir director and editor of the church newsletter.
◦ Founding a Bible study for jr./sr. high school boys and served as a volunteer for youth
group activities
Bethlehem United Methodist Church Thornton, PA Summers and holidays from 1999
• I substituted on piano and percussion for contemporary worship teams, on organ for
traditional worship, and as a guest in the adult choir for Handel's Messiah and other special
music.
• As a tribute to the outgoing music director, I wrote a special arrangement of one of his
worship songs and conducted the choir and brass ensemble.
• My future wife and I volunteered together on the J-team (a door-to-door outreach welcoming
newcomers to the neighborhood) and team-taught Vacation Bible School.
Campus Ministry The Catholic University of America Washington, DC, 1999-2001
• I founded a new praise and worship band for the Office of Campus Ministry. Working within
budget, I purchased equipment, recruited members, selected music (sometimes including
transcribing chord charts by ear), rehearsed the band, and planned/lead worship music for
multiple events.
• I became one of a rotating group of music leaders for Sunday services with responsibility over
music selection, rehearsal, and leading during the service; I also played piano/keyboard on a
contemporary praise and worship team for a Wednesday-night gathering.
St. Cornelius Catholic Church Chadds Ford, PA Childhood - 2001
• In high school:
◦ I gained practical experience as a versatile keyboardist for worship music in various styles,
switching seamlessly between written-out, classical style piano/organ parts and chord-
chart/improvisational piano and keyboard. On one occasion, I improvised piano
accompaniment for visiting gospel choir
◦ I became one of a rotating group of cantors, as well as singing in the choir
◦ St. Cornelius' adult choir became one of the first to perform music I wrote.
• Some of my earliest experiences singing in public were as a child soloist at holiday services.

CURRENT EMPLOYMENT
Media Services Coordinator Shenandoah University 2007-present
Winchester, VA
As the head of the audio-visual/multimedia support department at this multi-campus, United
Methodist Church-affiliated university, I am known for being effective and providing assistance
beyond my job requirements; I have also become adept at doing big things with small budgets. Key
experience includes:
• Supervision and training of technology laypersons and professionals (including 3 full-time
employees, about 20 student workers, and countless students/faculty/staff) in a variety of
equipment and software, including
• Video projection and display systems
• Audio and video integration with PowerPoint/presentation software
• Sound reinforcement setup and operation
• Audio recording and computer-based editing/compression
• Video recording and computer-based transferring/editing/titling/compressing
• Video teleconferencing/video chat
• Audio-visual/multimedia long-term planning, research, purchasing, installation, maintenance
and personnel scheduling and distribution within constraints of tight budgets and limited
staffing
• Forging effective and cordial working relationships with a diverse set of individuals
throughout a complex organization
Key accomplishments include:
• After less than three years on the job, I was given the Wilkins Award, the highest award given
to a staff member at Shenandoah University, for outstanding leadership and achievement.
• I guided Spiritual Life staff in selecting creative, on-budget audio-visual equipment solutions
that were portable enough for air travel (on mission trips, etc.) while remaining powerful
enough for medium-sized group events. I was also instrumental in conceptualizing and
implementing a new multi-screen display solution in the main chapel that was both innovative
and unobtrusive; the system uses a combination of fixed and movable flat-panel displays to
provide both ease of setup and flexibility to reorient/reconfigure congregational seating
layout.
• I contracted and worked with an outside expert to redesign the problematic sound
reinforcement for outdoor commencement ceremonies, resulting in what one administrator
called the “best sound ever” at multiple ceremonies.
• I completely redesigned a problematic workflow for incoming audio recordings which often
resulted in misplaced or inefficiently processed discs; the new process occurs completely
online, is easily trackable, and is consistently documented, distributed, and archived.
• To streamline communication and deal with growing demand for audio-visual equipment and
services, I initiated and maintained a new Media Services webpage, including online forms,
live chat support, and a rich series of video and written tutorials to walk visitors through
technology help step-by-step in plain English (for examples, visit http://youtu.be/HlJaWEAgiUc
and http://youtu.be/cKYul1uKdLI)
• I am developing and executing long-term plans for multiple technology initiatives—both big-
picture ideas and minute details—under special assignment from the president and academic
vice president.
