Monroviahe senatorial election for Montserrado and fourteen

other counties in Liberia is fast approaching and
candidates have started chasing support from all
corners but it seems George Weah of the Congress
for Democratic Change is the first amongst other opponents
in Montserrado to grab a huge jolt which could prove pivotal
at the polls in December.
On Thursday, 14 out of a total of 17 members of the House
of Representatives from Montserrado unanimously endorsed
Weah candidacy through a written statement of support
signed by all the lawmakers.
To add more weight to Weahs endorsement, the Unity
Party Montserrado County Caucus chair Representative
Bill Twehway was amongst the lawmakers as he has vowed
to ensure that other candidates from the opposition bloc
including his own party do not receive close to a thousand
votes in districts making up the county.
Representative Twehway promised that he and his colleagues
from the Unity Party will form a strong collaboration with
the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) to ensure that
Weah obtains 90% in the total votes cast in Montserrado and
warned other contesting candidates to follow the example
of the UP candidate Mr. Ali Sylla, who has withdrawn from
the process.

received support from the UP during the 2011 presidential

elections as the party did not put forth a candidate against
him in his district said, the presence of Weah in the Liberian
Senate will further strengthen the capacity of the senate to
deliver to the Liberian people.
The lawmakers in their petition stated amongst several things
they were cognizant of their roles as national leaders in the
Legislature to provide national and community leadership to
citizens of Liberia and that said role can only be played by
people of selfless, caring, and honest characters who put the
interest of the people above all else.
Representative Snowe said acknowledging that the
reinforcement in the ranks of the legislature with persons
who have demonstrated love for country and fellowmen will
enable the legislature to further provide quality leadership to
the people thereby justifying its trust.
The lawmakers further recognized the roles played by
Ambassador Weah as Goodwill Ambassador and the numerous
contributions he made nationally and internationally by
bringing respect, honor and recognition to Liberia.

We now hereby resolve to endorse the candidacy of

Ambassador George Weah as senator of Montserrado County
and call on all citizens of Montserrado County to rally
support for his overwhelming election as senator, portion of
the statement of support signed by the lawmakers indicated.
The lawmaker in their petition statement also stated that
the previous position held by Weah as peace ambassador in
Liberia affirms their confidence in him to provide quality
leadership to the people of Montserrado County in the
Liberian senate.
Lawmakers who signed the petition included; Bill Twehway
(UP), Thomas Fallah(CDC), Edwin Snowe (INDP), Solomon
George (CDC), Acarous Gray (CDC), Munah Youngblood
(CDC), Julius Berrian (CDC), Saah Joseph (CDC), Gabriel
Nyenkan (formerly of the UP) Abraham Corneh (INDP),
Adolph Lawrence (INDP), Edward Forh (CDC), William
Dakel (NDC) and Henry Fahnbulleh (UP).
Receiving the statement of support candidate Weah started
his response by apologizing to people he said might have
been affected by decisions taken by the party nothing that all
decisions taken in the past were in the interest of the party,
saying he has no malice against anyone.
Weah also said, the expression of support to his senatorial
bid in Montserrado County demonstrates the importance of
consensus building in legislative politics. He paid specific
recognition to members of the ruling Unity Party and other
independent candidates who endorsed his candidacy.
I am convinced that this endorsement will have a maximum
effect on the grounds which is expressed by your presence
here as other partisans to endorse my candidacy and I am
calling on you to make yourself visible during the campaign
period, Weah said.
Why support Weah
Sources in the corridors of the political arena are of the belief
that the lawmakers support to Weah has some undertone
among which might include reciprocal effect come 2017,
where it is believed that Weah and the CDC will not put
up candidates against these lawmakers in their respective
districts during the 2017 presidential and general elections.
Most of the lawmakers who endorsed Weah have fallen out of
favor with some members of their constituencies where they
have openly threatened to vote them out come 2017 but some
believe that with the support of Weah there could be some
considerations from their electorates.
According to sources, by consensus Weah and Snowe
have agreed for Weah to give in to Snowe come 2017 in
Montserrado and rally support for his candidacy as Senator
for the county.

Leave the race, Twehway warns

The lawmaker said: We promise that if any candidate wins
more than one thousand votes in our districts that person wins
the election so if you know what I know pack your things
and behave like Sylla and say you are sick because with 14
of us lawmakers supporting a candidate, it sends a message
that election is over. Ambassador Weah, we are prepared to
work with you to go into all the communities of this county
to campaign for you.
The UP lawmaker was joined by his fellow partisan,
Representative Henry Fahnbulleh who once served the Unity
Party as Secretary General, a ranking member of the Party
and Gabriel Nyenkan who recently resigned from the party.
Weahs Presence stalls Session
Thursdays regular session at the House of Representatives
was overshadowed by an elaborate event of signing a petition
to support the Congress for Democratic Change political
leader in the ensuing special midterm senatorial elections in
Montserrado County.

AMERICA DECLARES BARACK OBAMA WORST PRESIDENT

I
A PLEA TO
HIGH COURT
SHUT DOWN CRIMINAL COURT E
OR CHANGE THE JUDGE

RAPE VICTIMS are crying out for justice in post-war Liberia,

a nation recovering from a bloody crisis in which mothers,
daughters and children were raped by gun-toting rebels taking
advantage of a lawless environment.
A SURVEY BY the Association of Female Lawyers of Liberia
(AFELL) in 2005 found that almost 75% of female respondents
had been raped during the Civil War.
THIS IS WHY MANY were relieved in 2005 when Rape was
finally made a non-bailable offence under the laws of Liberia.
BUT DESPITE the new measures, the laws on the books have
been unable to keep our mothers, daughters, granddaughters and
young babies from sexual predators.
THE SAD STORY of the late Olivia Zinnah, a 7-year-old
who was raped but later died in December 2012 after years of
pain and surgeries is a shocking reminder of the inadequacies
crippling the judicial system in a country on the mends from war.
TODAY, SEX CRIMES are becoming rampant. So rampant
that Liberia has become a major hub for human trafficking,
prompting the U.S. State Department to recently declare that the
government does not fully comply with the minimum standards
for the elimination of trafficking.
WITH A WOMAN AT THE HELM, many were hopeful that the
Criminal Court E
JUDGE CIANEH CLINTON-JOHNSONs reign has been
marred by controversy as several foreign nationals accused of
raping underage
ONE HIGH-PROFILE CASE after the next has slipped through
the doors of the court, leaving victims to live the rest of their
lives under the clout of a dark crime as their perpetrators walk
free.
AMONG THEM: JAAFAR BASHIR, 44, a Lebanese national
charged for his alleged involvement in the raping of young
Liberian children within the age range of 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 15;
ALI SAKSOUK, 21, another Lebanese national who was also
accused of rape but granted his freedom by the controversial
judge. Saksouk was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl after
her father filed a complaint that he found Saksouk and the girl in
a 4-Runner Jeep, according to police charge sheet. ANTHONY
KASSABLI, 44, and his father, EDMUND DIB KASSABLI,
81, two Lebanese nationals convicted of Human Trafficking
are currently out on bail after Judge Johnson granted bail. The
father, Edmund Dib, has reportedly left the country while his
son, Anthony remains out on bail in Monrovia; DAVID WAINE,
a Canadian national and Country Director of Equip-Liberia, was
languishing at the Monrovia Central Prison, since his arrest on
November 13, 2013 until he mysteriously won bail and is now
back in Canada.
IT IS Judge Johnsons lapses in judgment when she offered a
window of opportunity for possible flight for Bashir that has
many crying foul. In a shocking move, the controversial judge
granted Bashir, a US$25K bail, citing several legal citations
as provided by the law. Solicitor General Betty Lamin Blamo
immediately objected and prompted Supreme Court Chamber
Judge, Associate Justice Phillip A.Z. Banks to file a writ of
prohibition and ordered a stay of the release, keeping Bashir
behind bars.
SADLY, JUDGE Johnson bought into the Defense argument
that Bashir, who videotaped his sex acts with underage girls,
is now claiming insanity even though Dr. Benjamin Harris had
previously determined that there was nothing wrong with Bashir
and found him fit to stand trial.
IT SADDENS US that in this day and age when Liberia is
boasting the first female elected President who has incorporated
a large number of women in her government, the country still
struggling to deal with sex crimes against women and underage
children.
IF WE CANNOT get it right now, the future will spell doom for
our young ones who are continuing to fall prey to one bad justice
play after the next with very little hope that they would see an
end to impunity for rapists and sexual predators.

s President Obama really America's worst president? This would seem

like the definitive conclusion of the American people based on recent
events. A poll came out a few months ago that rated Obama at the
bottom of all modern US presidents. President Bush, whose approval
rating stood at 22 percent when he left office, was declared a better president
than Obama according to that poll. Another poll concluded that the American
people believed Mitt Romney would have made a better president. The Press
even created the scurrilous title of "Liar of the Year" purposely to confer upon
Obama. This onslaught against Obama culminated in a historic defeat of the
Democratic Party in the midterm elections where republicans increased their
majority in the House of Representatives and toppled the Democrat-led Senate
to become the new Senate majority.
The republican oppositions in the recent midterm election cycle simply
had to utter the name of the imaginary boogeyman -- "Obama" -- without
even delineating their political agenda and they would instantly lead their
Democratic opponents in the polls. That is how toxic and reviled the American
people considered Obama. Even members of the president's own party went
to great length to alienate him in their efforts to inoculate themselves against
the antipathy the American people hold against this president. But is there
a rational basis for the low esteem with which the American people hold
America's first black president? To answer this question, it is important to
look at some of the key measures -- economic policy, domestic policy, foreign
policy -- by which the American people judge a president's performance.
Economic Policy
Contrary to the baffling conclusions of the American people, Obama is
categorically one of America's most accomplished presidents. None of
Obama's modern-day counterparts inherited anything closed to the economic
debacle that he did. To give this some perspective, the former republican
Federal Reserve chairman, Ben Bernanke, recently declared in court
documents that, "Sept and Oct of 2008 was the worst financial crises in global
history, including the Great Depression." Bernanke should know. In addition
to being the Fed chairman who presided over the Bush Great Recession, he
is America's preeminent authority on the topic of the Great Depression. He
wrote his doctoral thesis on the subject. This squarely places the Bush Great
Recession on par with the Great Depression of the 1930s, the hallmark of
America's worst economy.
Taking a snapshot of the economy Obama inherited, the entire American
economy was in cardiac arrest at the inception of the Obama presidency.
This was brought about by the complete meltdown of the housing market
which was instigated by greedy, exploitive schemes concocted by Wall St.
The Republican president's declared policy of zero-regulation of Wall St. left
unscrupulous bankers guided by their predatory impulses. The near-collapse
of the American housing market and the a complete economic meltdown were
the outcomes of this folly.
The economy was shedding 800,000 jobs per month. The unemployment
rate shot up to 10% within months of Obama's presidency. The Dow Jones
Industrial Average was at 6000 and in a free fall. The US dollar fell to historic
lows. Venerable American corporations were on their deathbeds. The banking
and auto industries were imploding. The federal deficit stood at record highs.
The entire world economy was in a recession.
America was embroiled in two wars simultaneously, Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Iraq war alone was costing the American taxpayers $2 billion a week.
Upwards of 400,000 people perished from that war. The great American
military had been floundering against a bunch of rag tag insurgents in Iraq
for nearly eight years. Progress on the Afghanistan front was nonexistent. Al
Qaeda was at the height of its fame, perplexing the Great United States. Osama
bin Laden was making weekly videos taunting America as a paper tiger.
This was the perilous state of affairs of the America that Obama inherited from
his predecessor, George Bush. At no time in recent American history had the
economy been this disastrous. No other modern-day American president had
ever inherited a situation so dire. Then to add insult to injury, before President
Obama even set foot in the Oval Office, the republican leaders gathered and
concluded in that meeting that their strategy in dealing with this president
would be to block absolutely everything he tried to accomplish. Even before
he gave them any reason at all to oppose him. And this was in the throes of
America's worst economy when Americans were losing their jobs at the rate
of 800,000 a month, a predicament which was brought on by the leadership
of a republican president. So not only was Obama faced with America's worst
economy, he was also confronted with a republican party that intended to
ensure that America did not make any economic progress under his presidency.
Republicans accumulated the highest number of filibusters in the history of the
American Senate (400+) in their efforts to block any progress that President
Obama tried to accomplish on behalf of the American people and to make him
a failed president. This is more filibusters than accrued under all other US
presidents combined. In the throes of the worst economy in modern American
history, they declared that making this president fail was their number-one
goal. In the House of Representatives where republicans assumed leadership
in 2010, they literally shut down the government for the last four years to
ensure that President Obama did not achieve any success.
Republicans were willing to endure the dubious distinction of America's
least productive House of Representatives in history if it meant they could
successfully undermine the Obama presidency. They rebuffed every policy
he tried to implement, warning the American people that if Obama's policies
were implemented, America would become like Greece. They blocked
every form of economic progress including the perennial bipartisan effort
of repairing America's roads and bridges. They blocked their own bills from
becoming law because it would mean Obama would sign a successful bill
into law. They orchestrated plans that saw one million civil service jobs cut
from the economy. Who deliberately cuts jobs from the economy during the
worst recession in history? This hostility toward this president was simply
unprecedented, especially when America was facing its worst economic
period in recent memory.

By any barometer, Obama inherited the worst economy of any modern

American president. It is difficult to encapsulate the extent of the disaster that
Obama inherited from President Bush. To say it was a catastrophe of biblical
proportion would be an understatement. Under no other recent president did
the fate of the American economy hang directly on the policies that would
be instituted by the president. Businesses could not invest in the economy
because they were collapsing by the droves. Consumers could not spend in
the economy. They had no jobs. The entire fate of the economy hung on the
policies that this president would put into place. It is important at this juncture
to examine the results of the policies Obama implemented to restore the then
ailing American economy.

Of all countries in the the global recession, America was the second
fastest to recover with Germany being the first. Greece still hasn't recovered.
So much for republicans' assertions that America would become Greece.

The economy went from losing 800,000 jobs per month under
Bush to having created 10.3 million jobs under Obama.

All private sector jobs lost during the Bush recession have been
recovered under Obama. Had republicans not orchestrated the cut of one
million civil service jobs, all jobs lost during the recession would have been
restored at this point.

The unemployment rate that peaked to 10% within months of
Obama taking office is now down to 5.8%.

The GDP has gone from -9% under Bush to +4.6% under Obama,
a +13.6% turnaround -- one of the highest under any president. And maybe the
highest that was not spurred by war spending.

There has been 64 successive months of economic expansion under
Obama.

The Dow Jones, the flagship indicator of the financial market, has
gone from as lows as 6000 and a free-fall under Bush to 17000+ under Obama.

The US dollar has gone from more than a 50-year low under Bush
to a 6-year high under Obama.

Corporations that were on their deathbeds during Bush are now
making record profits under Obama.

The American auto and banking industries that were facing total
collapse under Bush are now vibrant industries under Obama.

The imploding housing market during Bush that was the source of
the economic meltdown is now profitable again under Obama.

Today, 700,000 genuine manufacturing jobs have been created
under Obama after millions of jobs were outsourced under Bush, who then
suggested to Congress that fast food jobs should be counted as manufacturing
jobs.

The federal deficit that stood at record high under Bush has now
been reduced by more than half under Obama.

Gas prices are at record lows. America is less dependent on foreign
oil than any time in the last 30 years. Domestic productions are at record highs.
While the economy has not fully recovered from the depths of the Bush Great
Recession, these are no doubt monumental achievements. Given the abysmal
lows to which the economy had sunk, it will take the efforts of several
presidents to restore America to its full economic glory. But unequivocally,
Obama has made his contribution and then some.
One of the foremost complaints against Obama is that the wages of Americans
are not rising. But in this current predatory configuration of American
Capitalism (95% of all wealth created in America have gone to the richest 5%
for the past several decades) how will wages for the American people rise?
Even in the world's most exploitive dictatorships, such a lopsided distribution
of wealth could not be replicated. And this is supported by policies protected
by Republicans in Congress. They have rebuffed the president's proposal to
ensure that Americans receive a livable wage of at least $10 per hour. The
current federal minimum wage in America is $7.25 per hour with the effective
rates even lower in some states. The minimum wage in neighboring Canada is
nearly $12 per hour in comparison. Paradoxically, the American people blame
Obama for their stagnant wages but elected the party whose policies keep them
at paltry wages.
Domestic Policy
The president's healthcare policy, Obamacare, has been the most contentious
domestic issue of his presidency. He embarked on addressing healthcare
because more than 40 million Americans went without adequate healthcare
coverage. Of those that had insurance, they could lose their insurance at the
whims of an insurance company executive who decided that they were costing
the insurance company too much money. Presidents for 100 years have tried
unsuccessfully to ensure that all Americans had affordable healthcare. Due to
the exorbitant and ever-rising cost of healthcare, Americans were threatened
with the prospect of bankruptcy in the event of any serious illness. Obama
finally succeeded in this endeavor that was a pipe dream for many presidents
before him.
Republicans continue their vigorous fight to derail Obama healthcare policy
with over fifty votes taken in the House to repeal his healthcare law. They shut
down the government in the Senate costing billions of dollars to the economy
because the president would not let them kill his signature achievement. Their
major contention is that the cost of the president's plan is fiscally prohibitive.
Republicans recent estimate of Obamacare concludes it will cost taxpayers
$130 billion over the next decade. This must be taken with a huge grain of
salt because the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that
Obamacare will cost $100 billion over the same period. But even if republicans'
estimate were given credence, they were squandering $2 billion a week on an
ongoing war in Iraq. The cost of one year of war in Iraq could nearly defray the
cost of ten years of healthcare for Americans. With this perspective, can any
sane person call Obamacare a bad investment? But the more crucial question
is: how has Obamacare performed so far in its one-year of existence?

We admire your courage, but then Rodney Sieh, it is perhaps in your

LIBERIANS INDEBTED
TO US SENATORS FOR
PUSHING AGENDA

The Editor,

elaware US Senator Chris Coons (D) has been

a key voice of support in the US Congress on
problems confronting Liberia. Liberians owe
him and his colleagues that he sways in pushing
the Liberian agenda a great deal of gratitude.
Senator Coons is the face on US television this week making
the case for the $6 billion to help fight Ebola both in Africa
and here in the United States. He is not new to the game. He
was part of a Congressional delegation that visited Liberia
and held discussions with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
We must also commend the growing community of US
citizens of Liberian origin in the Delaware Valley, one of
Senator Coons' reliable constituency grass roots campaign
base of supporters. He has granted an open access to them
and meets with them regularly.
Before his trip to Liberia, Liberian-Americans met with and
asked Senator Coons to raise the issues of corruption and
nepotism in government with President Sirleaf, especially
regarding Robert Sirleaf then as head of the lucrative
National Oil Company of Liberia.
According to the President of the Liberian-Americans of
Delaware, Senator Coons upon his return from Liberia, met
with and briefed his Liberian constituents on his meeting
with President Sirleaf and their concerns they wanted him
to raise with the Liberian leader.
The President of Liberian Community of Delaware Valley
told LANS news that Senator Coons said he referenced
the President's three sons occupying key positions with
one heading the National Security Agency (NSA), another
a Deputy Governor at the Central Bank of Liberia, and
son Robert as head of the giant National Oil Company of
Liberia.
Weeks later and with pressure from Washington, Robert
Sirleaf resigned from NOCAL.
Lesson: If you are a Liberian who holds US citizenship,
make it your business to reach out to your US Senator and
Representative. They have local campaign offices in your
city, and you never know how much help you can get from
them for yourself personally and for Liberia. Unlike your
Liberian lawmakers back home who look out only for
themselves, US lawmakers never take for granted any of
their constituents, because one vote can make a difference.
Personally, I have met and had discussions with Senator
Coons on my job (Amtrak) as he travels frequently by train
between Washington and Wilmington, Delaware; a very
affable and friendly person.

WHEN THE FARM OWNER IS

SLOW TO CALL THE THIEF A THIEF,
THE THIEF CALLS THE
FARM OWNER A THIEF"THE CASE
OF ALI SYLLA AND SIRLEAF'S
FAILED UNITY PARTY...

The Editor,

he statements Attributed to Ali by Unity Party

Youth asserting that he left the risk unilaterally,
are deception intended to have him wrongly
persecuted continuously.
From the inception of Ali's candidacy, he was fought and
opposed by major actors in The Unity Party not wanting
him to contest because in their situation room, especially
those from the Ellen's block have agreed to support Robert
Sirleaf and not an Ali. Upon his refusal to accommodate
their selfish decision, he was abandoned and threatened
that everything concerning his elections would be treated
with cold hands. Evidence of his neglect is substantiated
by the Presence of key Unity party members:Musa Bility,
Amos Tweh, Wilmot Paye, Rick Barsi-Giah, Eugene
Nagbe,Mary Broh and others on Robert's side. Let it be
cleared that I was not a supporter of Ali even up to this
point but consciously I believe his exist is as the result
of the burden that will have come on his tiny financial
shoulder alone against a heavy weight George Weah,
knowing that his party had threatened not to sponsor
his campaign because of the president's son. I openly
challenged these mentioned United Party members to state
that they are not supporting Robert Sirleaf if they should
prove me wrong.
The Unity party has proven deception to a fellow young
man, like Ikemefuna in Achebe's Things Fall Apart, Ali
was sacrificed by them, they are the Thief not Ali and all
of their actions are as the result of Ellen's orchestration.
She is desperately preparing her post-presidential life and
can do anything to keep power at her feet.
She will be forever persecuted by Liberians for profaning
the sacredness of the presidency and reducing our
democracy to a cash-game. Of course she won't go scotfree, she will be forever discolored and quarantined
beyond recognition for creating a hopeless-hope for our
generation. Her intellectual and political remains will be
thrown in the forest of deception where she will be hissed
by wild insects and mourned by creatures that know her
not. She and her divided Unity Party are the wolf in sheep
clothing not Ali.

Monrovia-

ary
Tamba
a
resident
of
Front Street in
Monrovia pushed
a wheelbarrow filled with a
tub of cold water sachets, she
seemed unmoved when the news
reached her about President
Ellen Johnson Sirleafs address
to the Nation early Thursday,
lifting the state of emergency.
Tamba like every other Liberian
talked about the level of hardship
they had had to endure because
of the deadly Ebola virus and
the restrictions the government
enforced under the state of
emergency.
This Ebola is embarrassing us,
by now our children are supposed
to be in school but they cant
because of Ebola, she said. A
woman like me, Im supposed to
have my own business running
by now bit thats not the case.
Tamba had lost customers
because of the governments
decision to send its nonessential
employees on leave because of
the Ebola outbreak. The mother
of four and the breadwinner for
her family said the deadly Ebola
outbreak has cost her and family
a lot. She said the lifting of the
state of emergency is good but
want the President to go beyond
and reopen schools.
We are suffering in this country.
I have four children, but no
support. At least if they can give
us a way to sell for us to support
our children, it will be good.
There is no job in the country,
she said.
Continued Tamba: I used to sell
Lappas before, but because of
Ebola I cant sell. My husband is
not working so I have to help my
family. This year embarrassed
us; we had no peace; no
business because of Ebola; all
the customers who had jobs and
used to buy from us are no longer
working. Since this morning I
came here, if I buy L$ 100 water
for it to finish its hard.
President Sirleafs lifting of the
state of Emergency imposed on
the country in late August this
year due to the deadly Ebola virus
seems to have come as a relief.
Speaking during a nationwide
address, President Sirleaf said
significant gains have been made
in the fight against Ebola thus
prompting the government to
make changes to the emergency
imposed.
Thus having consulted relevant
stakeholders,
the
national
health team and partners, I have
informed the leadership of the
national legislature, that I will
not seek an extension to the State
of Emergency, she said.
This is not because the fight
against Ebola is over.It is
because in our estimation, and
that of those with whom we
have consulted, the progress we
have witnessed, coupled with the
various measures and ongoing
interventions all of which
can be continuously adopted
and sustained under the relevant
provisions of the public health
law have combined to reposition our efforts to sustain
the fight against the virus until
it is finally eradicated from our
country.
The president said the progress
that Liberia has made would
not have been possible without
the resilient response to the call
by all citizens, especially health
care workers adding that despite
the gains, the country should not
let down its guard because there
is still a lot to be done.

TOO MUCH HARDSHIP

LIBERIANS RELIEVED AS PRESIDENT LIFTS STATE OF EMERGENCY

Wade C. L. Williams, wade.williams@frontpageafricaonline.com

Notwithstanding these gains, a

number of our compatriots are
still lying in ETUs, hot-spots are
springing up in rural areas, and
many of our compatriots are still
dying of Ebola, she said.We
also know that Liberia cannot
be declared Ebola free until our
neighbors are also Ebola free.
This means that we cannot let
down our guard nor can we
afford to reduce our vigilance.
She said Liberians must continue
to abide by the safety measures
put in place by health authorities.
Though the State of Emergency
is lifted the President has kept
the curfew in place, extending it
to midnight.
President Sirleaf said this
was necessary because the
government is determined to
enable the maintenance of the
required vigilance, community
mobilization and awareness, as
well as sustain the gains; until the

country can start the progressive

countdown of 21 days, until the
national goal of zero-new-cases
by Christmas is achieved all
across the country.
She said the government
would maintain many of the
previous measures in place
with appropriate adjustments,
consistent with the progress
in the fight against the deadly
disease.
Therefore, I am pleased to
announce that the curfew is
extended to midnight, except
those in proximity to hotspots,
weekly and border markets are
open and school authorities
upon immediate passage of the
budget will organize young
people in communities to start
the renovation and clean-up of
school facilities in preparation
for the opening at a time that will
be decided by the progress that
we make in this fight, she said.

Liberians mixed views

Many Liberians have welcomed
the decision by the President
to lift the State of Emergency
and return the country to some
form of normalcy, but others
are calling for the lifting of the
curfew totally.
Now,
we
have
made
substantive gains in terms of the
sensitization and the awareness
that have grabbed the attention
of our international partners, our
people throughout the length and
breadth of this country about
the realness and existence of
this Ebola virus, said Julius T.
Jenson an activist and a resident
of Monrovia.
But Mamesi Kabbah a Liberian

political commentator said there

was no need to keep enforcing
a curfew that has proven to be
meaningless over time.
The cancellation of the state of
emergency, has just validated
our argument that it was not
important to the fight against
Ebola, she said.
There are contradictions, why
would you cancel the state of
emergency and still have those
measures in place. It simply
shows that you should not have
even come up with a state of
emergency in the first place.
Kabbah wants the government
to lift the curfew totally because
she said the nighttime curfew has
no impact on the fight against

Ebola.
We ask the president to please
remove the curfew, because it
is not necessary. It makes no
difference, she said. All we
can do as a people is to see how
best we can follow our measures
to fight the Ebola virus. We must
not be complacent; because the
government is already being
complacent. If you look at the
street over there, the government
had a bucket there but now there
is no bucket.
The fight against Ebola continues
with new hotspots being
identified but with the significant
drop in the number of cases, the
country could be well on its way
to reprieve.

Ponpon told FrontPage Africa
shortly after his release that the
police had arrested and kept him
behind bars for four days for a
crime he did not commit. Ponpon
who works at the Civil Law Court
at the Temple of Justice, claim
that he was on his way to work
on November 10, 2014 when
four police officers approached
him at the intersection of Benson
and Gurley Street and ordered
him arrested on instruction of
Deputy Police boss Abraham
Kromah. He said he was later
detained at the LNP headquarters
for four days before he was taken
to court.
I was not arrested alongside
any rioters in West Point, I was

Ponpon. I am only implicated

He said the police wrongfully
arrested him because of his

The gay rights campaigner stated

The committee at a news
conference
Thursday
said,
their action is in line with its
constitutional oversight mandate
which is to provide oversight
over expenditure of all public
sectors and Public funded
institutions by taking decisions
on the audit reports submitted to
the National Legislature by the
General Auditing Commission.
In a statement issued Thursday,
the PAC said, hearings conducted
by the committee brought to
light many issues ranging from
procurement
malpractices,
administrative
malpractices,
fraudulent
activities,
non-

internal
audit
systems and internal control
lapses by senior officials of
government and state enterprises.
NPA conflict of interest
Among the five public institution
audits were conducted on,
the PAC accused the National
Port Authority among many
things for weakness in the
administration of lease policy
by the NPA management,
conflict of interest by lawyers
representing the NPA and lease
holders, significant failure by
lease holders to comply with
lease policies entered into with
the NPA and illegal occupants of
NPA properties.
The PAC also accused the NPA of
allowing state owned enterprises
to occupy NPA properties and
this plus several others violation
the Committee is recommending
that Madam Matilda Parker,
Managing director of the NPA
investigate the issue of conflict
of interest and write a report to
the PAC and Auditor General.
The
Committee
is
also

recommending that the President

ask the NPA managing director
to ensure that the services of Cllr.
Cooper Kruah be immediately
terminated and the NPA hires the
services of another lawyer.
During the hearings conducted
on the Audit report by the PAC
it was observed that Henry and
Henry Law firm represented
by Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah was
providing services for the NPA at
a flat rate of US$ 1,000 per month
and was interestingly providing
similar services for some of NPA
tenants such as Dong Young/
PUK Yank fisheries, Building
Materials Center and West
African enterprise.
The report disclosed that the
Auditor General met with Cllr.
Kruh at the Dong Young/PUK
Yank fisheries where he admitted
being a retained legal service
provider for the company.
During the hearing Madam
Parker Expressed doubt over
dual roles being played by NPA
lawyer and vowed to terminate
the services of the Lawyer, the
Committee report stated.

The PAC also accused the

former Gender Minister, Madam
Varbah Gayflor,, Madam P
Parleh D. Harris, Director of
Women Division, and Mr.
Stephen Forkpa, comptroller for
misappropriating over seventy
thousand united states dollars
and recommended that they
jointly restitute US$ 75,000.00
and deposit the amount into an
escrow account.
The report also accused
the former Gender boss of
misappropriating funds intended
for
womens
organizations
unaccounted
allowances,
payment made to third party,
making
payments
without
delivery notes and payment to
bogus entities.
The committee also reported that
irregular payments were made to
Deputy Gender Minister Annette

Mr. Bundo is also being
requested to restitute LD$ 35,629
and said money be deposited into
government escrow account.

Monrovia Commissioner of the Liberia Anti-Corruption

Commission (LACC), Mrs. Aba Hamilton-Dolo has
admonished officers of the Bureau of Immigration
& Naturalization (BIN) to be nationalistic in the
performance of their duties.
Speaking recently when she served as facilitator at a five-day
workshop in Office Administration for officers of the BIN in
Gbarnga, Bong County, the LACC Commissioner reminded the
Immigration personnel that they serve as the first point of contact
for people entering the country and that their behavior gives a
positive or negative impression about Liberia.
Commissioner Dolo pointed out that corruption especially
bribery, was a serious risk to national security and therefore urged
Immigration officers to always consider the national interest of
the country in whatever they do. The LACC has also offered to
provide training in anti-corruption for officers of the BIN.
During the workshop, Commissioner Dolo presented a paper on
several acts of corruption including bribery, nepotism, kickback,
conflict of interest, extortion, fraud and influence peddling. The
workshop which was organized by the Bureau of Immigration &
Naturalization was held from October 27 November 1, 2014.
The Liberia Institute of Public Administration (LIPA) served as
lead facilitator.

8-YEAR-OLD SURVIVES EBOLA IN BOMI

Tubmanburg, Bomi County

ight-Year-old Gebah
Johnson, of the
Vortor Town, Dewoin
District became the
first child survivor of the Bomi
County ETU.
Gebah was one of five new
happy faces who walked out of
the Bomi facility and into their
communities.
Taking delivery of the
survivors,
Superintendent
Samuel F. Browne urged the
community not to stigmatized
the survivors.
I am turning over these
survivors into your care,
please do not refuse them
or stigmatized them in the
community. They are your
brothers and sisters. Can you
look at a baby like Gebah and
stigmatize him? He is still in
need of your help and support
and if you start pushing him
away, what would you expect
the others to do?
Dr. Gorbee Logan said little
Gebah is the first child survivor
of Bomi and described his case
as unique in a way, because
Gebahs father died of the virus
and after a few days he and
his mother was brought into
the ETU, when they started
showing signs and symptoms
of Ebola. We ran a test on
the child and his mother, but
amazingly, the mother, who
suffers a mental illness, and
is taking her drugs, was tested
negative, Dr. Logan said.
Not satisfied, Dr. Logan
he did another test on the
mother which also came back

negative. But Gebah was still

positive. He went through
the normal treatment as every
other survivor, Explained Dr.
Logan.
At his release this week, little
Gebah was in high spirits,
laughing and playing, while
others were crying tears of joy
and some of sorrows.
Holding
his
survivors
certificate, Gebah gleefully
marveled at his departure
package of a mattress, two
small bags of rice and half bag
of beans, sanitation bucket and
other household items for he
and his family to take home.
Dr. Logan hugged and shook
the hands of each of his
patient who turned survivor,
in a solemn reminder to the

community that they were now

cured of Ebola and approved to
return to the community.
I will shake their hands and
hug my patients because
they have been tested over
three time and they are now
negative. Our psychosocial
team will keep following these
patients because with time,
some of these patients might
development other minor
complication and will have to
be addressed.
The survivors were certificated
by Ms. Frances Alesi, Head
of field office, UNMIL Field
office Bomi County.

I feel sad and happy, she
said. I feel sad because my
husbands entire family was
wiped away and I am left with
two children. My husbands
mother, father, four sisters, and
three brothers all died after we
arrived here September 18.
Miatta says she was the only
person from her family who
was discharged.
We should all believe Ebola
is real, because I am a survivor
today. I want people to always
believe Ebola is real and stop
bathing dead bodies. Keep
washing your hands to help
stop the spread of Ebola.
Miatta who explained her

ordeal, says she contracted

the Ebola virus from her late
Husband, who cared for his
sick sister, whom everybody
believe suffered miscarriage.
My husband said the lady
suffered miscarriage and when
he wore his sick sisters T-shirt,
I started refusing to sleep with
him in bed, which he did not
like because of our culture not
to refuse our husband. But after
a while I started sleeping on the
bed with him again.
Narrated Miatta: I used to
cook and take the food for the
other sisters. Few days after,
she died, but my husband was
still denying that his sister died
of Ebola. And when the lady
died, the other brothers were
all falling and crying on the

body. After she died, the sisters

and brothers bath the body
including my husband. And
another sister even braided
the bodys hair. They told me
to take part in the bathing of
the body but I refused and my
husband got angry and felt bad
because I did not bath his sister.
So after that I go affected from
my husband, and when we
were brought to the ETU, they
all died.
Other survivors who were
released included: Survivor
Zoe Kamaa, 37, from the
Ngandoe /Vortor- Dewoin
District, Massah Konneh 22,
from the Nyemah/Dewoin
District and Tenneh Kamara is
19, from the Gbapolu County.

GREAVES
EYE
EXTENSION
OF
OIL
BID
ROUNDS
Hints at Lawsuit But Uphill Battle looms

M
Monrovia -

r.
Harry
A.
Greaves,
a
former Managing
Director of the
Liberia Petroleum Refining
Company is recommending
that the National Oil Company
of Liberia immediately extend
the close of pre-qualification,
submission,
opening
and
notification of bid round for
the four remaining offshore oil
blocks: LB-06, LB-07, LB-16 &
LB-17 by 90 days.
In an open letter to both the Chief
Executive Officer and Board
Chair of NOCAL, Mr. Greaves
commended NOCAL on the very
creative manner in which it has
approached the vexing question
of how to enable Liberians to
participate meaningfully in the
current bid rounds.
NOCAL has for some weeks now
been processing applications
to lease Liberian oil blocks
to companies it says, are best
suited to both explore for and
produce our countrys petroleum
resources.
NOCAL has hired the help of
Ernst & Young LLP to assist with
the process. All bids submitted
are reportedly being processed
by E&Y.
All companies seeking to
explore in Liberia, including

our offshore territories, should

expect to meet our high standards
for corporate responsibility,
according to the guidelines
posted on the companys website.
NOCAL says it is following a
rigid process when evaluating

block bids and will measure

bidding companies to determine
overall fitness and require that
each company bidding for blocks
in the Liberia basin submit the
following items for examination
before being awarded any

blocks.
While
expressing
commendations to NOCAL for
the process so far, Mr. Greaves
said in order to create a wider
playing field, NOCAL should
extend the deadline for bid
submission by 90 days, from
October 31, 2014 to January
31, 2015; extend the date for
opening of the bids by 90 days,
from November 3, 2014 to
February 3, 2015; and extend
the date of notification to the
successful bidders by 90 days,
from November 17, 2014 to
February 17, 2015.
Greaves, who says he only
heard of the bid round through
casual conversation with one of
NOCALs Vice Presidents, Pete
Norman, a couple of days ago,
says by the time he rushed to
NOCAL's website, he realized
he had missed the boat.
He nevertheless praised NOCAL
for heeding an advice he said
he passed on to former NOCAL
CEO Chris Neyor regarding
Liberian equity participation in
which he says he recommended
that the bidding procedure
include an incentive to IOCs to
"carry" Liberian citizens with a
5-10% equity participation in
their bids). However, NOCAL
says it the Liberian equity
participation was the brainchild
of Board Member Jacqueline
Khoury.

But Greaves insists that a

significant omission from
your rules is an anti-corruption
provision that I recommended:
namely, that Liberian government
officials (to be legally defined in
the bid documents) be prohibited
from participating in bids.
Hinting that the rounds could
open grounds for future lawsuits,
Greaves pointed a criticism
of the process, he says did
not given sufficient publicity
inside Liberia, thus opening
it to legal challenge now or in
the future from myself or other
Liberians like him who might
have wanted to participate
in this great opportunity. If
you want the process to be
seen as truly transparent and
a genuine effort to garner as
wide a participation of Liberian
citizens as possible, then you
should have taken a slice out of
NOCAL's considerable media
budget to mount a vigorous
publicity campaign in Liberia
through print (newspapers) and
broadcast (radio and television)
media to bring your 2014 bid
round to public attention.
Legal experts both in the US and
Liberia counter that Greaves will
have a large legal hurdle.
The fact that more than 15
Liberian companies applied and
about 9 pre qualified signals
that NOCAL may have met the
minimum standards required to

under the bid procedures, one

legal observers opined Thursday.
The observer noted that Greaves
assertion that NOCAL should
have conducted a massive
public relations campaign to
inform Liberians, while morally
laudable, is legally tenable at
best. It is often said in the law a
moral obligation is no obligation
at all. If Mr. Greaves does seek
legal redress he will have to file
an injunction against NOCAL to
stop the process.
Liberian law, and most western
jurisdiction
including
the
UNITED STATES, require
some kind of bond. In this case,
Greaves would have to post of
bond of at least US$20 million
dollars to halt the process. This
does not mean that he will get
his 90 day reprieve, however. It
only stops the process because
a court find that he may likely
succeed on the merits. Last, legal
scholars see little chance for
relief for Mr. Greaves through
court process. AS one put it, Mr.
Greaves comes waltzing in at the
eleventh hour when it is now too
late to grant the relief sought, at
least not without causing great
harm to others. The law aids
the vigilant and sleeping ones.
Mr. Greaves best bet is to work a
deal with NOCAL that can assist
his cause.

BUSINESS
UNDP CONSULTANT SAM JACKSONPREDICTS EBOLA COULD MAKE ECONOMY
WORSE, WARNS AGAINST BUSINESS AS UNUSUAL IN POST RECOVERY EFFORTS

PAGE
RONT

NOT ENTIRELY HOPELESS

T

Monroviahe deadly Ebola virus

is still visible on the
shores of Liberia but
economists and other
think tanks are now discussing
and predicting the possible
consequences of the virus on
the economy of the country.
For some the economic
situation in the country has to
be analyzed from both pre and
post Ebola in order to draw
conclusions on the level of
impact the virus has made on
the economy and Economist
Samuel Jackson says despite
the grim statistics currently
on Liberia due to the Ebola
outbreak all is not lost as the
country has the potential to
change things for the better.
Delivering a statement at the
Bella Casa Hotel where a
two-day Economic recovery
forum, which is geared
toward strengthening trade
and commerce for postEbola Liberia is ongoing in
Monrovia, Jackson warned that
post Ebola needs to be handled
with care to ensure the country
recovers..
The Forum is organized by the
Liberia National Investment
Commission, World Bank,
UNDP, Ministry of Commerce
and the Consortium of
Concerned Businesses in
Liberia and it intends to build
the community capacity and
economy in order to respond to
and recover from the impact of
Ebola.
On the topic the state of
Liberias Economy before
the Ebola disaster, impact on
GOLs capacity to deliver on
National development Agenda
and
National
Budgetary
realignment, Jackson said
even before Ebola more than
80 percent of the population
live below the international
poverty line of 2 dollars a
day according to the UNDP
Human Development Report
and Liberians have no equity in
any of the iron ore exploration
and other mineral licenses or
production going on today;
Said Jackson Liberians own
no equity in the emerging
oil and gas sector;90 percent
of products consumed in the
country is imported, including
220 million dollars for our
staple, rice.
Significantly,
the import market is mostly
controlled by foreigners with
Liberians toiling in petty trade.
Liberia has the highest cost of
electricity in the world today
with rates averaging 64 cents
per kilowatt.
In spite of the odds, he believes
the country can still do better.
Jackson stated These are
grim statistics, but we are
not in an entirely hopeless
situation. We do have the
potential and capacity to
change the narrative of Liberia

These are grim statistics, but we are not in an entirely hopeless situation. We do have the
potential and capacity to change the narrative of Liberia as an abysmally poor country due to
lack of accountable governance institutions and a mostly unproductive people. That is why the
Post Ebola Recovery strategy must not be based upon business as usual, Samuel Jackson.

as an abysmally poor country

due to lack of accountable
governance institutions and a
mostly unproductive people.
That is why the Post Ebola
Recovery strategy must not be
based upon business as usual,
Ebola could make things worse
Jackson says Ebola has the
potential to make situation
worse in Liberia outlining
deterioration in economic
indicators
including
the
projected economic growth
rate for 2014 year which has
been reduced from nearly 6
percent to under 1 percent.
We could see a contraction in
economic output in the first two
quarters of next year compared
to the same quarters this year,
resulting in a recession; most
lines of revenue will decrease
resulting in expected drop of
20 percent of the current years
budget. We are expecting a
decrease in revenues of at least
106 million dollars, Jackson
stated.
He is also predicting that
export earnings will inevitably
decline, and the trade deficit
not to rise due to lower imports.
Stated Jackson I estimate that
vulnerable employment will
increase to nearly 90 percent
of our population; construction
and planned reinvestments
will be postponed and some
cancelled; food insecurity
will result due to limited
or drastically reduced farm

outputs; We would need

emergency food assistance
for some parts of the country;
malnutrition, prevalence of
underweight children, maternal
mortality, infant mortality
and other health MDGs will
be eroded; gross and net
enrollment ratios in school will
be negatively impacted.
Insanity hurting Liberia
Jackson says Liberians must
learn a new way of doing
things in order to move the
country forward.
The definition of insanity is
doing the same things over and
over and expecting a different
result. We must change the way
we do business. The business
of a country is business, the
economist observed.
He says the country needs
an educated and trained
workforce and support to
education by increasing the
budget to education with the
goal of improving educational
attainment
and
financing
vocational
and
technical
education.
Amongst other measures,
Jackson is proposing that
food security is a foundation
of a truly independent nation,
cautioning the country to
support agriculture through
funding in the budget, of at
least ten percent as required
by the Comprehensive African
Agriculture
Development
Program.

Jackson further said We must

create financing mechanisms in
our banking system to support
the long term credits needs
of the agriculture sector; we
must build capacity within the
financial system by creating
sector and industry specialists;
the national budget must be
used as a tool to create wealth
for Liberians; we need to
create a preference category
for Liberians in the provision
of goods and services to the
government, and we must
amend the PPCC Act to
accomplish that objective.
He called on the Government of
Liberia to require concessions
in
Liberia
to
promote
linkages to small and medium
enterprises; a local content

law must be enacted to include

a requirement for Liberian
equity participation in all
natural resource development,
and this must be a foundation
of the post Ebola Economic
Recovery Strategy.
Nor poor, but poor management
For Jackson, Liberia is not
a poor county but has been
poorly managed.
Liberia is not a poor country.
It has been poorly managed
for generations.
That can
change if we utilize innovative
and
creative
financing
mechanisms for infrastructural
development. We do need
multilateral
support
and
private lending, but we can
use methods like securitizing
natural
resource
(Angola

Model) assets in exchange

for critical infrastructure, he
declared.
He also wants support to
nontraditional
exports,
including the export of music
and films and developing
a
thriving
entertainment
industry as a means of tapping
the creative energies of the
youthful population.
Jackson concluded finally,
we cannot grow the economy,
create economic transformation
and promote social cohesion
without
the
scrupulous
implementation of the rule of
law, especially as it relates to
business and other contractual
obligations. We must enforce
our newly enacted commercial
code.

LOOKING FOR RELEVANCE

C

hristopher Neyor,
an
independent
candidate in the
Montserrado
County special senatorial
elections, has downplayed
claims by Liberty Partys
Benjamin Sanvee that hes a
disgruntled child.
In a less than eight-minute
interview with Sky FMs
T-max Jlateh on November 10,
Sanvee figuratively described
Neyor as a mad man and also
took issues with George Weah
and Robert Sirleaf.
Thats what I called the three
pillars of the system. And this is
how I define them and you will
be hearing more of this [when
the campaign starts]. You have
a representation of the system,
who has now mocked into
a candidate, passing around
peddling false hopes and
talking about believing again.
You have an accomplice and a
benefactor of the system, who
inspires so much hope, but is
now sitting at the queens table.
So he, too, is quiet. He is
sitting and eating at the queens
table. So he can no longer
speak. And the last pillar of this
system is the disgruntled child,
who helped, was a part of the
system and cut deals with
the system, but is obsessed
now because the system is
not allowing him in the room
anymore. What we represent
is a fresh start. We dont have
[any of those characteristics]
and none of them can point
their fingers to me to say I am
part of this system, Sanvee
said.
But Neyor, who graced

Danesius Marteh, danesius.marteh@frontpageafricaonline.com

Hope Song against Ebola by

Liberian Artists Together for
Advancement (LATA), told
reporters that Sanvee was
looking for popularity at his
expense.
Young Ben Sanvee is trying to
gain relevance. Hes rightfully
[doing] so because he doesnt
even stand a chance. So I
wouldnt comment on that
because hes trying to get
attention and get relevance
but that wont happen. If you
look at the race, it is basically
between two persons, me and
George Weah.
Sanvee doesnt have the
experience [and] the capacity
that it takes to get Liberia out of

the mess it is in, in the Senate.

He has some education but he
needs to look for some time
and gain some experience,
Neyor, who served as president
of the National Oil Company
of Liberia (Nocal) said.
In the run-up to his declaration,
Neyor accused President Ellen
Johnson-Sirleaf of trying
to politically destroy him
and, along with Robert, of
exploiting the oil resources.
So, wasnt he an angry man in
that open letter published in
several local dailies in June?
I am an angry man in the
spirit of Moses when he left
the Kings palace to rescue
the children of Israel. So in

PAGE

that sense, yes I am because

I am angry with the suffering
of the Liberian people. I dont
know what you [he] mean
by cut deals. If I were a deal
cutter, I would have been in the
government.
I dont know what you mean
by not allowing me in the
room. I opted to get out of
the room because I refused to
compromise on the future of
our country. That is pure and
simple. It is not a matter of
cutting deals. I think there have
been enough deals cut that is
why the country is the way it is.
So in going forward, there are
some of us who have to standup for what is right and that is

what we have done. And that

is what the Liberian people
have seen over the years at
LEC
[Liberia
Electricity
Corporation] and the national
oil companythat Christopher
Neyor had a zero tolerance
for corruption. If that was
not the case, this particular
administration would have
been all over me, Neyor
answered.
Weahs fear factor
Neyor fears the footballerturned politicians popularity
but is still confident of pulling
a shock in the pending political
game.
While, I [fear] George Weah
because he still has some

constituencies and there is no

question about it. He will be
the most competitor. [There is]
no chance for Robert Sirleaf.
[But you can] mark this.
When the result of the
elections is given, whenever it
is announced, the man standing
in front of you, Christopher
Neyor, is going to be the
next senator of Montserrado
County, he concluded.
Weah, who topped Sirleaf in
Montserrado County during
the 2005 and 2011 presidential
elections, cant wait to be
called a senator having said
he can beat any candidate in
Montserrado.

he Ebola epidemic
that has been declared
an
international
emergency by the
World Health Organization and
President Barack Obama has
special significance for Maine.
The media firestorm that erupted
when a medical worker from
Fort Kent refused to submit to
quarantine upon returning from
West Africa spread fear of an
Ebola outbreak throughout the
state.
In a lecture hosted by the
Boothbay Harbor Memorial
Library Saturday, Nov. 8, a
rare window was given into
the real-life devastation Ebola
has caused in Liberia, Sierra
Leone, and Guinea, in addition
to the real-world solutions that
are preventing the spread of the
virus.
Dr. Daniel Bates, an attending
physician at LincolnHealth who
is leading the charge for Ebola
prevention at local medical
facilities; the Rev. Torli Krua,
founder of Universal Human
Rights International and cofounder of YOUNG-Africa;
and Alfrida Barr, a Liberian
citizen who has been stranded in
Boston since August due to the
epidemic, shared facts, figures,
and their efforts to combat the
global Ebola outbreak with the
small crowd in attendance.
"This is a hot topic for us because
the emergency department is on
the front line," Bates said. "It's
our job to identify cases as soon
as possible if and when they
arrive here in the U.S."
There have been 20 Ebola
outbreaks since the virus was first
identified in 1976; however, the
current epidemic is the deadliest
in history with a reported 13,676
cases and 4,910 deaths.
"Unfortunately, since we were
so slow to respond in this case,
there are many more cases,"
Bates said. "It's starting to reach
that point where it takes off with
exponential growth."
If left unchecked, the Center for
Disease Control has predicted
Ebola cases could reach 1.4
million worldwide by January
2015.
Krua, pastor of the Boston-

based Ziah Mission Baptist

Church, which has worked with
the Boothbay Baptist Church
for over a decade, is a Liberian
refugee who fled to the United
States after narrowly escaping
execution in Liberia's civil war.
He has since devoted himself to
refugee issues and post-conflict
reconstruction in Africa. His
work brought him to Sierra
Leone early in 2014, long before
Ebola had become a household
name.
Upon hearing reports that Ebola
was spreading through the
villages of West Africa, Krua
returned to Boston and sent
out a flurry of letters warning
Massachusetts' governor, state
legislators, and public health
officials about the deadly virus.
He was ignored.
"For some reason, when
something happens on the
other side of the globe," Krua
said, "people think it could
never happen here, it could
never happen to us. This Ebola
outbreak could not have reached
America if the world had
responded in time."
"As long as Ebola is in any
human being," Krua said, "I
think it's my responsibility to
make sure that people don't die
because of it."
Krua has been influential not
only in raising awareness of
Ebola in the U.S., but also in
educating Liberian communities
in preventing the spread of the
disease. Traditional funeral
practices in West Africa
involve touching the body of
the deceased. For an extremely
infectious virus such as Ebola,
these customs are a major cause
of transmission.
Krua has worked with religious
leaders in Liberia to halt those
funeral practices until the Ebola
outbreak is eliminated. "It's a
huge cultural shift," Krua said,
"but it's an emergency and we
need to take emergency action.
We look at it that Ebola is
temporary and it will pass away.
For now those regiments and
procedures and protocols need to
be observed"
His efforts, he said, have been
well received by Liberia's

EBOLA

HARSH REALITIES OF EBOLA

REVEALED IN BOOTHBAY LECTURE

community leaders. "If Ebola

is stopped, it's not going to be
because of WHO or the CDC,"
Krua said. "We need them, but
it's going to be stopped because
of the community, because of
community awareness, and
community prevention."
In addition to the medical and
humanitarian
crisis
caused
by Ebola in West Africa,
an unrecognized crisis of
individuals stuck in the U.S. due
to flight cancellations, border
closures, and other extraordinary
circumstances is emerging, Krua
said.
Krua estimates approximately
7,000 people visiting the U.S.
from West Africa have been
unable to return home due to the
Ebola epidemic.
Alfrida Barr is one of them.
Barr left her son in Liberia and

or assistance given to citizens

from countries with a Temporary
Protective Status designation,
which Obama has extended to
citizens of Honduras, Nicaragua,
El Salvador, Haiti, Sudan, and
Somalia, amongst others.
Krua is circulating a petition
to get the 100,000 signatures
needed to bring the plight of
West African citizens stranded
in the U.S. to the president's
attention.
Despite the media frenzy and
widespread fear of an Ebola
outbreak in the U.S., influenza
remains a larger public health
concern, with an average 36,000
deaths each year compared to the
one death caused by Ebola, Bates
said. He is confident, however,
that if the need arises, medical
facilities in Lincoln County
will be prepared to effectively

respond and contain the virus.

Due to the similarity in
symptoms between the flu and
Ebola, Bates explained that
medical facilities will use travel
history to determine a potential
Ebola case. If an individual who
recently traveled to West Africa
begins to experience flu-like
symptoms they will be treated as
if they have Ebola until proven
otherwise, Bates said.
The key to preventing an Ebola
outbreak in the United States,
however, is stopping it where
it started - in the West African
nations of Sierra Leone, Liberia,
and Guinea.
"Imagine if your child or your
mother was in an Ebola ward,"
Krua said. "We need to be moved
by love and compassion, not fear,
so that we can stop this epidemic
in its tracks, in Africa."

medium-term strategy, in the

context of Liberias long-term
vision plan, which aims to
transform Liberia into a more
prosperous and inclusive society,
and help the country to achieve
middle-income country status by
2030.
More specifically, the PRSDPO

transparency and accountability
throughout the government to
reduce corruption and to expand
the economy by providing credit
to farmers and by resolving
constraints to infrastructure

The Operation will also help
improve access to, and the
quality of, education and health

By improving access to
education, as well as addressing
infrastructure
and
credit
constraints,
this
operation
will help prepare Liberian
workers, especially the youth,
for productive employment and
give them access to more jobs,
said Errol George Graham, Task
Team Leader for the project.

OVER
Commission on Higher Education Director General long Corruption tale
I will not seek an extension to the State of Emergency, Says President Sirleaf; Extends
Curfew to 12 Midnight, Reopen Weekly and Border Markets, Among Others

Monrovia
hough the fight against the Ebola
virus disease is far from over,
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has
decided not seek an extension of the
State of Emergency.
According to an Executive Mansion release,
the Liberian leader, addressing the nation on
Thursday, November 13, and citing reasons
said, It is because in our estimation, and that
of those with whom we have consulted, the
progress we have witnessed, coupled with the
various measures and ongoing interventions
all of which can be continuously adopted
and sustained under the relevant provisions of
the public health law have combined to reposition our efforts to sustain the fight against
the virus until it is finally eradicated from our
country.
However, other measures that have been
adjusted are that the curfew is extended from
11:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight, except those
in the proximity to hotspots; weekly and

border markets are reopened and upon the

immediate passage of the 2014/2015 Fiscal
Budget school authorities will organize young
people in communities to start the renovation
and clean-up of school facilities in preparation
for the opening of school at a time that will
be decided by the progress made in the fight
against Ebola.
President Sirleaf recounted that since March
2014, the country has been wracked by the
outbreak which overwhelmed and disrupted
the rebuilding of the countrys health system
and undermined normal economic, social,
cultural and political activities.
Many of our fellow citizens became infected
and died. Many more died of treatable illnesses
as hospitals were shut down and beds were
insufficient to treat the infected. The nation
was shaken by this strange and dangerous
enemy, President Sirleaf noted.
She said, amidst the demands and criticism,
Government remained calm, undeterred and
took some actions. We acted decisively,

closing borders, imposing curfew, ordering

quarantines, closing schools, and restricting
public gatherings.
As the outbreak progressed, posing a clear
and present danger to the State, our neighbors
and the rest of the world, we were compelled
to declare a State of Emergency and obtained
the concurrence of the Legislature in keeping
with the Constitution. We took on the fight.
We appealed to the world. We appealed to our
citizens. Our citizens listened and the world
responded, she told the nation.
Today, President Sirleaf revealed, Liberians
can all be proud of the progress made which
would have been impossible without the
resilient response of all, especially the health
care workers who during those dark hours,
stood up and fought back.
Continuing, the Liberian President said, from
the active identification of cases to improved
contact tracing; from the proper management
of the outbreak through an Incident
Management System to the social mobilization

of communities; from the

global mobilization of
resources, to the strategic
support
of
partners,
Liberia continued to fight
back and remain thankful
to all for the responses
the country has received.
Today we can all be
proud of the progress,
she pointed out.
She emphasized that
despite the gains made
so far, a number of our
compatriots are still lying
in ETUs, while hot-spots
are springing up in rural
areas, and many of our
compatriots are still dying
of Ebola; noting that
this country cannot be
declared Ebola free until
our neighbors Guinea
and Sierra Leone - are also
Ebola free. We cannot let
down our guard nor can
we afford to reduce our
vigilance, she warned.
This is why, in keeping
with the public health
law, and determined to
enable the maintenance
of the required vigilance,
community mobilization
and awareness, as well as
sustain the gains; until we
can start the progressive
count down of 21 days,
until the national goal
of zero-new-cases by
Christmas is achieved all
across the country, we will
keep many of the previous
measures in place with
appropriate adjustments,
consistent
with
the
progress in our fight,
President Sirleaf stressed.
She expressed confidence
that Liberia can win the
fight against Ebola. I
believe that the resilience
and commitment of the
people remain strong and
resolute in this fight. I
believe that our partners
will continue to be with
us as we move to rebuild
our health care delivery
system. I believe that
the world has shown that
they do care. I believe in
the future of our country
and the very strong will of
our people, the Liberian
President reiterated.

EBOLA TREATMENT
NEARS
First trials to start in west Africa

Geneva (AFP) lobal aid agency

Doctors
Without
Borders said on
Thursday it would
begin unprecedented trials on
patients in West Africa to test
Ebola drugs and the use of
survivors' blood as therapy.
The trials in Guinea are aimed
at rushing out an emergency
therapy to battle an epidemic
which has taken more than 5,000
lives since December.
"This is an unprecedented
international partnership which
represents hope for patients
to finally get a real treatment
against a disease that today kills
between 50 and 80 percent of
those infected," said Annick
Antierens, who is coordinating
the trials for the medical charity,
known by its French initials
MSF.
The first trials are due to start in
December and results could be
available by February next year,
MSF said.
Ebola, transmitted through bodily
fluids, leads to haemorrhagic
fever and -- in an estimated 70
percent of cases in the current
outbreak -- death.
There is no specific treatment
regime and, as yet, no licensed
vaccine -- although one of the
leading candidates, known as
ChAd3 and made by Britain's
GlaxoSmithKline, is being tested
in Mali and elsewhere.
Patients' best chance of survival,
if their condition is caught early
enough, is taking paracetamol
for their fever, rehydrating and
being kept well nourished.

MSF is in discussion for a third

in Liberian capital Monrovia but
has not yet been given the green

The drugs have been shown to

Ebola, Antierens told AFP.

then it is a miracle drug... (or)
it is not efficient at all, and this
is very much possible. We have

the case, but it is still very much

She added that there could be
"an intermediary result, whereby
it's promising and we're not sure
if it will be efficient for every
patient".
Ebola, which emerged in
Democratic Republic of Congo
in 1976, is one of the most
aggressive pathogens known to

humankind, and victims tend

to die a few days after showing
symptoms.
The target for a successful trial
in each of the treatments under
consideration will be the patient
surviving for two weeks, said
MSF, adding that no one would
be tested without informed
consent.
The charity said there would be
little disruption to the patients'
normal care.
Patients in the Conakry trial will
be administered with blood or
plasma containing antibodies
from survivors.

safe and whether it can be scaled

deaths in the current outbreak,"
he said.
The antivirals were selected from
a shortlist drawn up by the World
Health Organization (WHO),
which is overseeing the project,
after a review of a wide range of
issues, including trials on nonhuman primates and availability.
"Conducting clinical trials of
investigational drugs in the
midst of a humanitarian crisis is
a new experience for all of us,
but we are determined not to fail
the people of west Africa," said
Peter Horby, who is expected to
lead the Monrovia trial if it gets
the go-ahead.
The trials will be the first ever on
Ebola patients, Horby told AFP.
"Every time a patient gets to
day 14, we will recalculate the
numbers and see what proportion
of patients are alive or dead... So
once we have confidence that
the fatality rate is 50 percent or
worse, then we would say there

is no evidence that the drug is

improving things, because that's
about the rate we see, and then
we would stop the trial," he
added.
"If the survival rate is 80 percent
or better, we would say that this
is good evidence that the trial is
effective."
Almost all of the deaths in the
current outbreak have been
in Liberia, Sierra Leone and
Guinea, but smaller outbreaks
have emerged in Nigeria,
Senegal, the United States and
Spain.

battalion and held high-level

talks on the threat of Boko
Haram, a US official said.
In a speech made public
Tuesday,
ambassador
Adebowale Adefuye appeared
to have taken US officials by
surprise when he launched
into a tirade against the US
administration.
Nigerian leaders were "not
satisfied with the scope, nature
and content of the United States'
support for us in our struggle
against terrorists," he said.
He accused Washington of not
providing the "lethal" weapons
needed to deliver "a killer
punch" to the militants.
But
State
Department
spokeswoman Jen Psaki shot
back that the US had "provided
and approved sales of military
equipment to its armed forces."
"These decisions are made, of
course, after careful scrutiny
to ensure they conform with
United States law."
But she acknowledged the
US had refused to transfer

some Cobra helicopters due to

concerns about the Nigerian
army's ability to use them.
There were also "ongoing
concerns about the Nigerian
military's protection of civilians
when
conducting
military
operations," Psaki said, adding
these had been discussed with
the Nigerian authorities.
Adefuye told members of the
Council on Foreign Relations
on Monday that allegations
of human rights abuses by the
military were "rumors, hearsays
and exaggerated accounts" put
about by rivals of President
Goodluck Jonathan and rights
groups.
But Psaki stressed the US would
not raise such concerns "if we
didn't feel and others didn't feel
that they were warranted."
Washington was ready to help
Nigeria train and improve the
effectiveness of its military,
Psaki added, urging the
government to investigate
allegations of abuses.

most of the last month
criticizing the Spanish

the player was out of action for
most of the past month with
injury and illness, it doesn't seem
all that unreasonable. Mourinho

On Thursday, AS is reporting that

The Uruguay international's
most recent offence occurred
during the World Cup, where he
was caught sinking his teeth into
Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini's
shoulder.
That incident saw him handed
a four-month suspension from

all football, after he had been

banned for 10 games for doing
the same thing to Chelsea
defender Branislav Ivanovic in
a Premier League match against
Chelsea in April 2013.
Now a Barca player following his

He told El Observador: "After
the suspension I had some

As he moved ever closer to his

was also accused of being fat by

now spoken out against those
who questioned his fitness.
"I was never overweight," he

His inability to control his
