Message from the Director

Dear Friends,
Greetings from Saint Anthonys Charity
Institutes, Jeppu, Mangalore.
All through the year the Church remembers
and honours its Saints, usually on the day each
was born to eternal life. But the number of Saints
is so great that there are not enough days in the calendar year to
dedicate a day to each one. Hence Holy Mother Church has set apart
the first day of the month of November to collectively remember and
honour all those who lived a heroic life and died a holy death for the
cause of the Gospel. However, this is not a day to merely honour and
revere All Saints. Holy Mother Church holds these heroes of sanctity
up as a challenge to all who profess Christ. Besides being revered and
honoured they should be seen as models for imitation. Too often we
place our Saints on high pedestals and pray to them for favours. It
is easy to do so. But what is more important is that we follow them
in imitating Jesus. It is by doing so that we give the highest honour
to our dear Saints. This is the true purpose for which the Church
commemorates her heroic sons and daughters who have attained the
beatific vision not just to pray to them for favours.
On the second day of the month we remember our beloved
family members who have gone before us to their heavenly reward. It
was these ancestors and family members of ours who handed down to
us the precious gift of Faith. They received the gift of faith from their
ancestors or from Missionaries, lived it, preserved it and passed it on
to us. And as we remember and honour them let us remind ourselves
that we have an obligation to live this precious gift of faith and pass
it on to the next generation. It is a good practice to remember also
others who have passed away but have nobody on earth to remember
them and to offer prayers for them.
On 14 November we celebrate Childrens Day. Children are the
future of our society as also of the Church so the present generation
of children should be rooted firmly in the faith. In this regard, all

parents have a duty to nurture their children in the faith. The pious
mother of Saint Anthony instilled in him the virtues of piety and
devotion and because of this, at the very young age of five he placed
himself under the protection of Mother Mary. Today most families
have just one or two children, and the majority of parents are in a
position to make life very comfortable for them. While care is taken
to see that they lack nothing with regard to material things parents
often neglect what is more important, that is to see that their children
are rooted and brought up in the faith. Eternal life that comes after
this earthly life can be earned only through faith and not by any
material things. Therefore, it is well to keep in mind this pertinent
question in Mathews gospel: What will it profit a man if he gains
the whole world but suffers the loss of his soul? (Mt 16:26.) Nothing,
of course! Not all his wealth will be able to compensate for all he has
lost.

CHILDREN HAVE A RIGHT TO BE LOVED

A child can ask questions that a wise man cannot answer. Is it
not surprising? A child which has no experience of this world does not
know what is right and wrong can astonish the genius. The childs mind
is Tabula Rasa; the entire world is new to it, that is why it questions
everything that it perceives. The answers of the parents quietly build the
conscience of the child. The family and the society have a special
responsibility in forming the conscience of the child. Therefore, if we
have a peaceful, loving and cooperating young neighborhood in our
society, it is because of the responsible parents.
The rights and duties of parents towards their children is the key
factor in this regard. A person may have right over his moveable or
immovable property, whereas the right over the children is not equivalent
to it. However my concern is not over the rights and duties of parents
but that of the child to be loved by its parents. Children therefore, have
the right to those conditions that are primarily essential for a good life.
Being loved is a condition that is primarily essential for the healthy
growth of children. To love a child is to seek a highly intense interaction
with the child, where one values the child for the child sake, where one
seeks to bring about and to maintain physical and psychological proximity
with the child. According to psychologist, Mia Pringle the basic and
all pervasive future of parental love is that, the child is valued
unconditionally and for his own sake; irrespective of his sex, appearance,
ability or personality. That this love given without any expectation or
demand for gratitude. Children need love especially when they do not
deserve it.
Rabindranath Tagore said, Every child comes with a message
that God is not yet discouraged of man. The curious eyes, opened
ears, fumbling speech, innocent look indicates that, God still loves the
world . No person is born a evil, murderer, thief, corrupt or slanderer,
but they are made like that. The Magisterium of the church describes
the education of children as the Proper Mission of parents. The
education of the children in fact, pertains to the essential nature of
marriage. It is one of the goods of marriage. What sort of education?
The present world knows the importance of civil education in order to
withstand competitive world. At the same time it is necessary to impart

the education which makes the child a human being. While we try to
teach children all about life, children teach us what life is all about.
Jesus loved children. He magnified the innocence of children, and
said unless we become like little children we cant enter into the kingdom
of heaven. Therefore, let us understand that children in our family are
like flowers in a banquet. Lets welcome them without prejudice, arrange
them well, place them in a proper place, mould them, shape them,
correct them, guid them and love them. Thus they become the beauty
of our family.
