Question 2:

A juice producer uses fresh apples to fresh squeeze apple juice. The amount of the juice
squeeze from these apples is approximately normally distributed, with a mean of 5.1 ounces
and standard deviation 0.8 ounces

a) What is the probability that a randomly selected apple will contain between 4.5 and
5.5 ounces of juice?
(5 marks)

b) What is the probability that a randomly selected apple will contain between 5.1 and
7.0 ounces of juice?
(5 marks)

c) At least how many ounces of juice will 80% of the apples contain?
(5 marks)

d) 60% of the apples contain between what two values (in ounces of juice),
symmetrically distributed around the population mean?

Question 3:

The registrar of a college with a population of N=8,000 full-time students is asked by the
mayor to conduct a survey of a sample of students to measure satisfaction with the quality of
life on campus. The following table contains a breakdown of the 8,000 registered full time
students, by gender and class designation:

a) If the frame available from the registrar’s files is an alphabetical listing of the name of
all N=8,000 registered full-time students, what type of sampling methods do you
recommend and why?
(5 marks)
b) If the frame list is not available what type of the sampling methods do you
recommend? Can you make statistical inferences from this sample to a population and
why?
(5 marks)

c) A sample of 100 students was selected and surveyed. The sample mean of satisfaction
with the quality of life on campus is 4.78 and standard deviation is 0.6. Construct a
!
95% confidence interval to estimate the population mean. (Formula : X ±   𝑡∝   !
)
!
(5 marks)
d) Given a standard deviation of 0.6, a sampling error of no more than ±0.05  with 95%
confident is desired. Determine the sample size.
(5 marks)

e) If you want to be 90% confident of estimating the population proportion to within a

sampling error of ±0.02  and there is historical evidence that the population
proportion is approximately 0.40, what sample size is needed?

Question 4:

a) What are the differences between a Type I and a Type II error? Give an example.
(5 marks)
b) What is the power of a test and how does it relate to hypothesis testing?
(5 marks)

c) What is the p-value? Explain how to use the p-value approach as the decision rule for
rejecting a null hypothesis?
(5 marks)

d) Referring the table below, if n1=5 and n2=4, at the 0.01 level of significance, is there
evidence that 𝜇! > 𝜇! and what is your statistical decision?

(5 marks)

e) Students in a business statistics course performed a completely randomized design to

test the strength of four brands of trash bags. One-pound weights were placed in to a
bag, one at a time, until the bag broke. A total of 40 bags, 10 for each brand, were
used. From the table on the next page, is there a difference in the mean strength of the
four brands of the trash bags? What is your statistical decision?

Question 5:

5.1 The following data represent the yearly movie attendance (in billions) from 2001-2011:
2.88, 3.2, 3.04, 2.96, 2.76, 2.8, 2.8, 2.72, 2.79, 2.89, 2.93

a) Compute the 3 year moving averages for this annual time series.
(5 marks)

b) Plot the original figures and the MA (3) figures in a rough diagram and use it to
discuss the trend. [Hint: the MA should clearly smooth out the scatter plot]

(5 marks)

5.2 Referring to the movie revenue table from 2001-2011 and regression summary set out on
the next page:

Attendance Revenue (Y)

Year (X) (Billion)
2001 2.88 18
2002 3.2 24.5
2003 3.04 23
2004 2.96 21
2005 2.76 19.8
2006 2.8 20.5
2007 2.8 20.1
2008 2.72 19.6
2009 2.79 21
2010 2.89 21.9
2011 2.93 23.1

(Question continues on the next page)

c) State the regression equation for the above model (define your Y and X values clearly)
and interpret the meaning of the slopes in this equation
(5 marks)

d) Predict the revenues for 2012 given that movie attendance in 2012 was 4.3 billion.
(5 marks)

e) Interpret the R square statistic above. Why would the adjusted R-square be superior to
the R-square?

Question 6:

The American Community Survey (ACS) is an ongoing survey that provides data every year
- giving communities the current information they need to plan investments and services.
Information from the survey generates data that help determine how more than $400 billion
in federal and state funds are distributed each year. The people in communities were asked
about: age, sex, race, family and relationships, income and benefits, health insurance,
education, disabilities, where they work and how they get there and where they live and how
much they pay for some essentials.

a) What information would you want to know before you accepted the results of this
survey?
(8 marks)

b) What types of survey error are likely to arise in the context of this survey?

(7 marks)

(Question continues on the next page)

c) You are in charge of this study of your community. Briefly explain how you would
organise this research project to deal with the issues below.

- the sampling frame

- the sampling method and sample size
- the questionnaire design
- data collection
- the hypotheses and data analysis
