The student will list characteristics

and elements of poetry.
Students in a large group will brainstorm
characteristics of poetry while the
teacher writes their ideas on the board
or on flip chart paper. The list represents
how the students see poetry now. If
stanzas and line breaks are not on the
list it needs to be added. Another list will
be generated at the end noting, which
ones stayed on the list and which ones
were eliminated.

The student will explore different

characteristics and elements of a poem
like stanzas and line breaks.
Using the Discussion Forum and the
Reply Only technique, students will list
characteristics and elements of poetry
adding a few lines of explanation to their
choices. If no one has put stanzas and
line breaks on to this list, it needs to be
added. This represents how the students
see poetry now. Another list will be
generated at the end noting which ones
stayed on the list and which ones were
eliminated. (Evaluate)

The student will identify and describe

different elements of a poem
like stanzas and line breaks.

The student will discuss how those

different elements affect the poem.

and discuss how the poem might be different in meaning, appearance, rhythm
and sounds when read aloud based on
the authors choices.
The student will discuss how those

Students will be divided into small
groups. Poems will be given to each
group. The students need to look at the
poem and discuss the line breaks, stanzas and other elements of poetry and
how those elements can affect the
meaning, rhythm, and appearance of
that poem. They will share their findings
in a large group discussion.

The student will create his/ her own

poem using stanzas and line breaks
purposefully and then create a second
poem changing those elements.
(Synthesis)
Students will create their own poems
using a topic of their choice. It has to be
at least 8 lines long. The students will
read aloud and record their poem on an
audio tool that will be shared with
his/her classmates. Their written poem
will be required to be accessible to the
students while listening to the audio.
After the students have recorded their
poem, they will be asked to consider
what if the line breaks were different?
They will then experiment with taking
that same poem and words and changing
where the line breaks and stanzas are
and then reading it aloud and recording
it to share. The written poem will, once
again, be required to be accessible to the
students. The two poems will be shared
with the whole class in the discussion
forum where comments and dialogue
can occur. (Synthesis)
The students will also reflect in their
class blog, about what they noticed
about line breaks and stanzas, how they
felt about this activity, and did the list
they created at the beginning of class
change and why. (Synthesis)
