THIS CHRISTMAS

Appliances are used everyday in the modern
home. The oven, the washing machine, the
refrigerator, to name a few, have all become a part of
our daily lives and many people will have serious
difficulties without these household appliances.
In the past these appliances were luxury
items, so only a few could afford them, now
they have become so widespread that most
people purchase them for their homes, and
change them ever so often. The question is,
what to look for when searching for these
former luxuries. Many people simply consider
the prices and possibly the brands, but there
are many more things you should consider
when buying an appliance for your home.
Firstly, you should consider the SIZE and
the style of the appliance. This is important
because before you even consider buying the
item you should make sure that it can actually
fit through your doors and into your home. If
the appliance cannot fit through your doors
then obviously it is not sensible to buy it.
It is also wise to consider whether it will fit
neatly into the area you want it to be placed.
Consider a style that fits and a style that blends
nicely with the theme of your home. For
example if your home has more of a relaxed
style, then buying a fancy, complicated washing
machine will confuse the feel of your home.
The next element to take into consideration is
the COST. The cost of owning an appliance has
three essential components; the initial purchase
price, the cost of repairs and maintenance and
the cost to operate it. In terms of the price of
an appliance, you should not gravitate towards
cheap first, because, the cheapest appliance is
not always the best on the market. Very often the
cheapest item comes with a high maintenance
cost and you end up spending much more than
if you had invested in a pricey but high quality
appliance. The appliance that is a bit more
expensive but is of an excellent quality will last
for a much longer period, and will cost less to
maintain. In this case you do actually save money.
The next step will be to make sure the appliance
is fully functional before you buy. Try to avoid
buying an appliance spontaneously. Consider
the features of each appliance and if possible ask
to test the appliance before you purchase it to
avoid unnecessary hassles. Be sure that the seller
has after sales service and offers a guarantee
on the essential parts and labour. The first
appliance you see is not always the one for you.
Comparisons between appliances are also
important when purchasing. Compare between
different brands and models. Avoid buying a
brand that you are not familiar with unless you
are personally confident in it’s ability. It is best
though to know a brand and to know its level
of reliability. For example a popular appliance
name is Panasonic. It would be disappointing to
buy an appliance and then later discover it does
not match your expectation. You would probably
want to return it if it does not please you.

you can play your part for some appliances.
For example; Did you know that refrigerators
use the most energy? This is because they are
always on. However you can help this situation
in terms of the type of refrigerator you buy.
Size and features affect the energy. Smaller
refrigerators use less energy, so only buy what
you need. The door features such as water and
ice dispensers use more energy so if possible you
can avoid these. Characteristics of new energy
efficient refrigerators include better insulation,
better efficient compressors and more precise
temperature/ defrost controls. The improved
defrost control also reduces freezer burn.
In buying appliances, during the financial crisis,
it is also wise to consider whether or not you
need the appliance. Try not to buy an appliance
simply because you like what you saw. Buy what
you need for your home. Prioritize and buy what
is on the top of your list. You can also budget
a price range that you will like to stay within
but remember that cheap is not always the best,
so be a little lenient in terms of this factor.

Let’s Talk Business IV
In our discussion in the last issue we discussed
that all communication implies that there is
a targeted audience to whom the message
is directed. Today we want to focus on
determining the communication objectives.
Determining this objective is dynamic more
so if the company is not a sole trader type
of company. Because in a sole trader there
is only one individual who determines
what those objectives are. However, as you
go further afield into partnerships, private
and public, and government institutions,
marketing objectives have to be consistent
with corporate strategy, and in some cases
the objective may be a directive of the board
or managing director or general manager.

However, if you are a sole trader most likely
you will not have unlimited resources and
your considerations for determining your
communication objective will be influenced
by your access to resources, so, prioritizing
is the key. In addition, you will have to
determine to what extent your are able to
achieve the objective, for example you may
want to raise awareness of your product or
service, but surely you will not be able to
do this on a national level, you may have to
focus in your local area or some specific area
or group of people.
Before a decision is made about the
communication objective an issue that needs
to be settled is the identification of the target
market and its perceptions. The target market
will be the set of persons and businesses that
have purchasing power, and to whom the
product or service will satisfy a need but who
are not aware of the existence of the product
or service and its ability to satisfy their need.
Perceptions will relate to how individuals and
businesses view your product and service,
they may have a colored or distorted view of
the product and service and so act inimical to
your business interest.
Based upon the foregoing, the sole trader will
be seeking a change in behavior and attitude
towards the product and service in one of
the following areas: cognitive, affective or
behavioral responses. What this means is that
the sole trader wants to put something in the
consumer’s mind, change an attitude or get

the consumer to act favorably towards its
products and services. Now there are different
models of consumer-response stages that
can be used in the marketing process to
determine the focus of your communication
objective.
According to marketing theory all these
models assume that a buyer passes through
a cognitive, affective and behavioral stage in
that order, ie. a learn-feel-do sequence. But
there are alternative sequences, example,
there is also the do-feel-learn and the learn-
do-feel sequences. These sequences describe
the level of involvement that the target
market has with the product and or service.
