Welcome
Introit
Call to worship
Be children of light.
Be children of day.
Come now and worship.
Come now and pray.
Together :
(All )To you, Lord of Life, we offer our gifts and our talents.
Use them and us to further your kingdom
and to glorify your name.
Amen
Hymn Ch4 182 Now thank we all our God
1
Now thank we all our God,
with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done,
in whom his world rejoices ;
who from our mothers arms
has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love,
and still is ours today.
2
Oh, may this bounteous God
3
All praise and thanks to God
through all our life be near us,
who reigns in highest heaven
with ever-joyful hearts
the Father and the Son
and blessd peace to cheer us,
and Spirit now be given :
and keep us in his grace,
the one, eternal God,
and guide us when perplexed,
whom earth and heaven adore ;
and free us from all ills
for thus it was, is now,
in this world and the next.
and shall be evermore.
Martin Rinkart (15861649) translated Catherine Winkworth (18271878)(alt.)

Hymn Ch4 351 Jesus hands were kind hands
1
Jesus hands were kind hands, doing good to all,
healing pain and sickness, blessing children small ;
washing tired feet, and saving those who fall ;
Jesus hands were kind hands, doing good to all.
2
Take my hands, Lord Jesus, let them work for you,
make them strong and gentle, kind in all I do ;
let me watch you, Jesus, till Im gentle too,
till my hands are kind hands, quick to work for you.
Margaret Beatrice Cropper (18861980)

Reading : Matthew 25: 14-30

1 Thessalonians 5.1-11
Hymn Ch4 694 Brother, sister, let me serve you
1
Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you ;
pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant too.
2
We are pilgrims on a journey,
and companions on the road ;
we are here to help each other
walk the mile and bear the load.
3
I will hold the Christ-light for you
in the night-time of your fear ;
I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.
4
I will weep when you are weeping ;
when you laugh Ill laugh with you ;
I will share your joy and sorrow
till weve seen this journey through.
5
When we sing to God in heaven
we shall find such harmony,
born of all weve known together
of Christs love and agony.
6
Brother, sister, let me serve you,
let me be as Christ to you ;
pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant too.
Richard A. M. Gillard (b. 1953)

Sermon - the parable of the talents - God wants risk takers

We praise you, life-giving God,
for you entrust your gifts to us
and empower us, through your Holy Spirit,
to use them effectively.
May we never fear failure
but rather rejoice that it is you we serve,
and delight in you as you delight in us.
We pray in the name of your Son
our Friend and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Hymn Ch4 547 What a friend we have in Jesus

1
What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear !
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer !
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
oh, what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer !

Have we trials and temptations,

is there trouble anywhere ?
We should never be discouraged :
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful,
who will all our sorrows share ?
Jesus knows our every weakness :
take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy-laden,

cumbered with a load of care ?
Jesus is our only refuge :
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do your friends despise, forsake you ?
Take it to the Lord in prayer !
In his arms hell take and shield you ;
you will find a solace there.
Joseph Scriven (18191886)

Offering
Hymn Ch4 807 Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow ;
praise him, all creatures here below ;
praise him above, ye heavenly host ;
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Prayers
Hymn Ch4 374 The Servant King
1
From heaven you came, helpless babe,
entered our world, your glory veiled ;
not to be served but to serve,
and give your life that we might live.
This is our God, the Servant King,
he calls us now to follow him,
to bring our lives as a daily offering
of worship to the Servant King.
2
There in the garden of tears,
my heavy load he chose to bear ;
his heart with sorrow was torn,
Yet not my will but yours, he said.
3
Come see his hands and his feet,
the scars that speak of sacrifice,
hands that flung stars into space
to cruel nails surrendered.
4
So let us learn how to serve,
and in our lives enthrone him ;
each others needs to prefer,
for it is Christ were serving.
Graham Kendrick (b. 1950)
