JOB DESCRIPTION DIRECTOR OF STUDENT LIFE AND UNITY IN


DIVERSITY (Middle School)
Summary of Position
The Director of Student Life and Unity in Diversity will bring a perspective and expertise
regarding discipline, placement, admissions, unity in diversity, and student activities. S/he will be
a resource to students, faculty, and parents as an expert regarding age-appropriate discipline,
grade-level activity balance, diversity in the community, middle-school admissions, and highschool placement. S/he will serve on the Student Support Team, which meets to discuss broad
division issues, plans and implements individual student plans. S/he educates parents and faculty
on middle-school issues including student discipline, responsibility, activities, and privileges as
well as diversity topics, discussions, and/or integration, middle school admission, new family
orientation, and high-school placement. S/he will manage student discipline cases (involving the
middle-school director when necessary), working closely with advisors and classroom teachers to
develop individualize plans that work within the framework of Developmental Designs. S/he will
be aware of and report about he overall discipline and activity scope of each of the grade levels.
The Director of Student Life and Unity in Diversity will work closely with the School Counselor
to ensure a whole-child approach to discipline and support with the framework of Developmental
Designs.
The Director of Student Life and Unity in Diversity serves as a member of the Leadership Team.
Essential duties and responsibilities encompass al those included in the Canterbury Teachers
Documents and the following:
Classroom Culture
Reviewing curriculum and investigating new approaches to delivering content in a way
that is age-appropriate
Working with teachers to maintain a classroom that incorporates best practices insofar as
diversity and student discipline is concerned (paying close attention that the
Developmental Designs methods are employed consistently
Working with the Student Support team to develop programs, procedures, and/or
responsibilities that have the students' best interests at heart and are effective ways to
bring them to the goal of graduating as a "whole child"
Professional Development and Manner
Serves on the Student Support Team
Shows a commitment to continuous personal growth and life-long learning, especially as
it pertains to his/her field
Supports colleagues actively and is a model of professionalism and integrity for colleagues
Demonstrates a readiness to provide direction for others


Pedagogy Practices
Takes on administrative responsibilities including programmatic and curricular review
and development in order to provide expertise to discussion within the Student Support
Team as well as the Program Team
Presents training to colleagues on effective integration of diversity ideals, classroom
management (via Developmental Designs), and activity balance by grade
School and Community
Proactively and regularly collaborates and communicates clearly with parents, colleagues,
and administration to better serve the students
Communicates with parents in innovative an engaging ways about middle school
diversity topics, age-appropriate discipline, Developmental Designs information as it
pertains to classroom management including but not limited to the MS Newsletter
Exhibits extensive knowledge and demonstrates support of Canterbury's traditions and
methods
Takes initiative in dealing with the school community
o Provides school-wide leadership and guidance and is passionate about serving the
children at Canterbury
o Viewed by peers, parents, and students as an exceptional member of the
community, and is consistently recognized for effectiveness
o Is a role model and guide for colleagues
Other work-related duties as assigned
Qualifications
