Abstract
Particle size distribution has been used as a basic for soil classification system as
well as for prediction of soil behaviour. Mechanical sieve analysis was used for
determining the size distribution for particle retained by # 200 Sieve (ASTM
standard). For particle passing the sieve, hydrometer analysis is routinely used.
An alternative testing procedure for the distribution of fine soil particle, called the
bouyancy method, was introduced by Bardet & Young in 1997.
The objective of the research is to compare the distribution of fine particles
determined by the bouyancy method to those obtained by hydrometer analysis.
Seven types of soil are used in this research, each samples is tested three times
with hydrometer and three times by bouyancy methods.
Comparison of the test results show consistency in the measurement using both
methods with a ratio of 0.7544 ! 0.055. Combination of the results of
mechanical sieve analysis and bouyancy methods gives a better graph as
compared to those combined with hydrometer methods. Thus, it can be
concluded that the particle size distribution obtained by the new procedure are
closer to the reality than those shown by hydrometer analysis. Nonetheless there
is still a need to continue research to validate the conclusions.
