GSM / EDGE / WCDMA Product Overview

Introduction
Wireless networks continue to grow rapidly as wireless communication becomes a normal part of
everyday life. New technology introductions, zoning limitations and new data applications are just
a few of the challenges engineers have to address to keep the network optimized. It is critical for
performance engineers to identify and resolve network problems quickly to limit the impact on end
users and ultimately the company’s bottom line.

X-TEL’s GSM/WCDMA systems provide real-time problem identification and post collection
analysis utilities to assist engineers in troubleshooting and fixing network issues. X-TEL tools are
designed to alert the engineer immediately when a problem occurs and then to provide the
capability to quickly identify the underlying cause. Most problems can be identified and corrected
while the engineer is still in the field. This reduces the impact for wireless customers and
improves overall business for the operator.

Host Controller Units

The HCU-2 unit was designed to support new test devices
that include a USB interface, such as the Nokia and
Qualcomm 850/900/1800/1900 GSM/WCDMA/HSDPA
test mobiles. The HCU-2 will support six USB devices,
eight serial devices and provide power for all 14.

X-2 GSM BSIC and WCDMA Scanners

The X-2 GSM BSIC and WCDMA Scanners are DSP-
based software radios that provides unparalleled precision
and user-defined options for the measurement of GSM
and WCDMA networks. The X-2 Scanner is available in
850/900/1800/1900 GSM band configurations and in IMT-2000 and PCS WCDMA bands. Our tri-
band dual technology receiver supports GSM 900/1800 MHz and WCDMA 2100 MHz in one
receiver. GSM applications include tower site surveys to calibrate network planning tools, make
RF coverage measurements, validate neighbor lists and monitor C/I and C/A interference.
WCDMA applications include these and additional pilot pollution interference measurements.

Real-Time Display
The real-time display shows a host of network performance and engineering criteria alongside a
moving map depicting vehicle position, base station proximity, and user configurable display
options of RxLev, RxQual, Hopping, AMR and more. Various voice and data scenarios may be
preprogrammed to minimize user involvement while testing. Audible alarms utilizing Windows
standard wave files alert users when network problems are detected. Heads-Up-Display views
provide key user defined real time data.

X-PEDite Tech Data Analysis

Xi with Rush Street imports X-PEDite XPF files with complete playback and
post processing capabilities. Xi includes an in-building profile builder that
can be used with X-PEDite to define data collection segments for real time
collection. This data can then be imported and matched to the floor plan in
Xi. Use plot previews, synchronized playback and automated report
generator with X-PEDite data.

GSM / EDGE / WCDMA Product Overview

Key Benefits
Modularity
The X-TEL GSM/WCDMA system supports a wide range of phone technologies. These include
support for test mobiles across TDMA, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, CDMA, 1XRTT, WCDMA/HSDPA
and iDEN technologies. X-TEL also supports industry grade dedicated scanners for TDMA, GSM
and WCDMA. Its sophisticated internal bus architecture supports up to 26 ports for system
expansion. An easy to use plug and play platform allows engineers to change phone and
scanner configurations based on their technology requirements. The cost of upgrading and
expanding the HCU platform is very economical when compared with other test systems in the
industry.

Real-Time Display
The X-TEL GSM/WCDMA system is easy to operate and offers the flexibility of choosing
parameters that are of interest to engineers to display on the map in real-time. With just the click
of a button, the real-time map can be configured to display different phone and cell site attributes,
allowing engineers to make critical decisions faster. Street networks from any MapInfo
compatible source can be loaded and displayed to further assist engineers with troubleshooting
problem areas. Along with the real-time map display, user configurable graphs, charts and text
displays of GSM and WCDMA parameters are tailored to assure easy understanding.

Playback Mode
Engineers can use the X-TEL GSM/WCDMA system to playback test data collected in the field.
Maps, graphs, charts and other displays viewed during playback function the same as in real-
time. The speed of the playback is adjustable, offering engineers more control in post data
collection analysis. Other controls allow the user to jump forward and backward to specific data
points within the playback file. Audible alerts are active during playback, just like in real-time.
Rush Street Mobile provides additional playback features such as synchronizing all display
windows to play back data based on user defined criteria like low signal strength, pilot pollution or
dropped calls.

Rush Street Mobile

Engineers can now analyze data in the field without the need to return to a central post
processing location. Rush Street adds several advanced real time features such as plotting
multiple devices during data collection. For example, engineers can view and plot both their
GSM and WCDMA test phones during data collection. For GSM only networks, the engineers
can plot multiple metrics such as RxLev and RxQual during the drive test. Engineers can also
define Boolean expressions to search for specific events such as dropped calls, poor signal
strength and others. Rush Street Mobile then presents a plot of only those points that match the
criteria. Once plotted, the engineer can click on any point to replay the drive from that location.
All open windows synchronize to the selected location to assist in troubleshooting. Rush Street
Mobile increases productivity of engineers because decisions can be made in the field.

Post Processing
Fast, reliable post processing of data integrated into MapInfo is yet another reason why the
X-TEL GSM/WCDMA system is so popular with users today. Drive test map generation can be
performed in the field or at the office. It is fully automated with customizable map attributes and
layouts. Hundreds of maps can be generated quickly with little effort or training. Advanced
analysis tools include dB Adjust to dynamically change signal strength of one or more channels
and then see the effects on best server maps. This tool is ideal for performing “what if” scenarios
for new sites with test transmitter data.

The X-2 GSM BSIC Scanner is a DSP-based software radio that provides unparalleled precision
and user-defined options for the measurement of GSM signals across 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800
MHz and 1900 MHz networks.

X-2 WCDMA Scanner

The X-2 WCDMA Scanner provides SCH, CPICH and PCCPCH scans to measure Eps/I0 and
Ess/I0 for the synchronization channel, Ec/I0 for the pilots in the CPICH and Epc/I0 for the
specified scrambling codes in the Primary Common Control Physical Channel.

Portability and In-Building Collection

The GSM/WCDMA system combines in-building data collection with vehicle data collection
system. The user can import floor plans using a variety of file formats such as TIFF, DXF, JPEG
and others. For in-building collection, simply pick a starting point and an ending point on the floor
plan and data is mapped in the same manner as drive test data. For the first time ever, full drive
test functionality and in-building data collection is integrated into one test tool, without sacrificing
features and functionality.

GSM / EDGE / WCDMA Product Overview

Real-Time / Playback Data Display

The GSM/WCDMA Real-Time / Playback map display accurately depicts vehicle position, cell
locations and local streets. The vehicle path can be configured to display critical GSM/WCDMA
parameters such as RSSI/RxLev or FER. Or display WCDMA parameters such as the primary
and secondary scrambling codes, primary CPICH Ec/I0 and UTRA carrier RSSI. The color of the
path drawn is also user configurable, providing another convenient way for these parameters to
be viewed. Rush Street adds to these capabilities by allowing the engineer to view multiple
phones and parameters simultaneously.

Events such as handovers, call origination, call

termination and dropped calls will be displayed along
the path drawn using user defined colored symbols.
The blue arrows in the window above indicate locations
where a handover occurred.

Neighbor lines are drawn from the vehicle position to

serving cell sectors, easily identifying the current
serving sector(s). Cyan and yellow lines will be drawn
to the strongest and second strongest neighbor,
respectively. Anytime a neighbor is stronger than the
serving sector, the lines and bar graph in the MAHO
Status Screen become red.

Engineers can use the X-TEL

GSM/WCDMA Xi software to playback test
data collected in the field. The map,
graphs, charts and other displays viewed
during playback function the same as in
real-time. In addition, the speed of the
playback is adjustable, which offers
engineers more control in post data
collection analysis. Engineers can also use
the right and left arrow keys on the computer keyboard to step back in 2-second increments or to
step forward data point by data point. By changing the location marker, engineers can scroll
either forward or backward within the data file to look at all information collected during the drive

WCDMA Pilot Pollution Analysis

X-TEL includes five classes of pilot pollution; four based on information from the mobile and one
based on independent scanner measurements. The five pilot pollution classes are presented
below.

Pilot Pollution Type 1

The first type of pilot pollution (PP1) is
defined when a SC Ec/Io is less than a
given threshold and the RSCP is more
than a defined threshold. These are user
defined with defaults set as Ec/Io less
then -10 dB while RSCP is more than -85
dB.

Descriptions and examples of pilot pollutions types 2, 3 and 4 follow.

Pilot Pollution Types 2 and 3

The pilot pollution type 2 (PP2) above

was triggered because RSCP was more
than -85 dB for more than 2 of the
Scrambling Codes. The RSCP and
quantity thresholds are user definable for
PP2.

Copyright © X-TEL Communications, Inc. 2007 Page 14

GSM / EDGE / WCDMA Product Overview

The pilot pollution type 3 (PP3) above

was triggered because the Ec/Io
difference between the first SC of the
Active Set was within 5 dB of the third SC
of the Active Set. The threshold is user
selectable for PP3.

Pilot Pollution Type 4

The pilot pollution type 4 (PP4) above

was triggered because the Ec/Io
difference between the first SC of the
Monitored Set was within 5 dB of the first
SC of the Active Set. The threshold is
user selectable for PP4.

GSM and WCDMA Missing Neighbor Analysis

X-TEL supports missing neighbor analysis for both GSM and WCDMA network testing.
Information from the scanner is compared in real time to neighbor information reported by the test
mobile. Missing neighbors are user defined based on signal level and proximity.

Missing Neighbor Example

Missing Neighbor: In this area, the phone is not reporting SC 347 as a neighbor, but the WCDMA
scanner reports that SC 347 is within the search proximity and greater than the minimum level
defined for a neighbor. There is only one active set SC so SC 347 is a potential missing neighbor.

Layer 3 Message Display

Layer 3 information is logged and presented in real-time and during playback for both GSM and
WCDMA networks. Simply select the message of interest and double click to decode the
message. Examples of both GSM and WCDMA messages are below.

The L3 Filter and Search utilities

allow users to select the specific L3
messages they wish to display
during data collection and those they
wish to find after data collections,
respectively. This powerful feature
allows the user to concentrate only
on specific messages of interest,
failed hard handovers, for example.

EDGE Capabilities
EDGE applies a new air interface modulation technique (8PSK) to increase the bit rate in the air
interface three times over conventional GMSK. The rate perceived by the user depends on
coding schemes created to protect the data against corruption. In GPRS, four different coding
schemes are available, whereas EDGE offers nine modulation and coding schemes (MCS).
These MCSs result in data rates of 8.8 to 59.2 kbits/s per timeslot. X-TEL will monitor and report
throughput and MCSs in use via the Serving Cell Display presented above.
X-TEL’s GSM system will display and collect the following metrics:
• Uplink/Downlink Application Throughput
• Mean_BEP, CV_BEP
• IP Address
• RLC Uplink Throughput
• RLC Uplink Retransmissions
• RLC Downlink Throughput

Rush Street Mobile

X-TEL’s Rush Street Mobile is an advanced software analysis program that includes powerful
tools for real time analysis of network performance. This optional program enhances the
GSM/WCDMA Xi software by adding several advanced features such as simultaneous plotting of
multiple devices, field plot analysis and synchronized playback from user defined trouble points.

Simultaneous Real Time Plotting

Simply choose the phones and scanner that you wish to display in real time. In this example the
user chose to display two Nokia GSM/WCDMA phones with handover state as a trailer.

Legends for all selected

phones and scanners are
available for real time
plotting and post
processing analysis.

The “snapshot” utility

allows the engineer to
capture an image of the

Plot Preview Analysis

Engineers use the Plot Preview Browser to select data files and user defined plot templates to
display multiple parameters over the drive test route.

Once the template is selected and executed, Rush Street displays the parameter on the map.
The display below shows both RSSI and RxQual Sub for the entire drive route. By default each
selected parameter is plotted at the collected latitude and longitude point.

The Offset utility was used below to move the RxQual plot to the left for easier viewing.
X-TEL provides a complete catalog of plot preview templates for each technology.
Engineers also have the ability to customize each template or create templates of their own using
the edit template utility.

Seek Playback – Synchronized Analysis

The Seek Playback feature will synchronize all open analysis windows to the specific point
chosen with Seek Playback. Once the event is selected, all windows synchronize and the data
file begins playback 2 seconds prior to the selected event. Playback will begin at normal speed to
allow the engineer to troubleshoot specific events like multiple handoffs, dropped calls or failed
handovers. Using the right and left arrow keys on the keyboard the engineer can step forward
data point by data point or backwards in 2-second intervals, respectively.

Seek Playback is a powerful analysis tool that allows detailed playback of specific events at a
user controlled speed.

One important aspect of Rush Street is the ability to perform detailed analysis in the field. There
is no need to return to a central location for traditional post processing that can often be
cumbersome and inefficient. Engineering productivity increases rapidly when using Rush Street
to diagnose and correct issues in near real time.

Xi Configuration Utilities
X-TEL’s GSM Xi data collection and analysis software includes many useful utilities to assist the
engineer in locating and correcting network anomalies.

Display Tabs
The Display Tabs feature allows the users to toggle between different sets of display windows by
clicking on a tab-strip loaded at the bottom of the main Xi screen. The users can share profiles
with other users without affecting the hardware configurations, color ranges, and other software
settings.

Six unique display layouts can be accessed. The first tab will always be the Xi.ini, and once
selected, it will load the display windows saved in this file. The configuration for a set of display
windows is saved as an “.ini” file.

Heads Up Display – HUD View

The HUD view feature is designed to make it easier to view critical data during real-time data
logging and collection. The engineer first chooses the desired display windows to use with HUD
view, and then enables HUD
view.

Once enabled, a button is

created at the bottom of the
HUD View display for each of
the selected display types. The
example to the right shows the
Rush Street display full screen.

To change the display, the

engineer pushes one of the user
defined display buttons along
the bottom.

Dynamic Event Generator: Audible Alarms – Wave Files

Xi supports advanced triggers based on phone and layer 3 activities to generate events and
audible alerts. These events can trigger playing wave file alerts or specific actions like start call,
start data session, etc. An example set-up screen is shown below. Audible alerts will sound
based on user defined event changes during data monitoring, collection and play back. These
audible alerts can be composed by the user or may be any standard audio WAVE file. Each slot
has its own audible event configuration screen. Therefore, different WAVE files may be used for
different phones.

WAVE files provide an audible alert whenever a user defined parameter threshold is exceeded or
the selected event (handover, dropped call, end call, etc.) is completed.

Start Test - Append Data Collection

X-TEL’s Xi software includes the option of appending data collection files in real time. The
feature provides many benefits for the user, including the ability to start and stop tests for
convenience without having to then merge multiple files into one output file for processing.
Simply choose an existing file from the list and select the appropriate start button (with GPS or
Indoors).

In-Building and Campus Navigation Software

Not only is the X-TEL Xi software one of the
best drive test tools available for
engineering networks, it is also the most
feature rich in-building collection system
currently available in the industry. All the
same drive test measurements are
performed just as easily in the in-building
environment. Floor plans are easily
imported using a variety of import filters,
such as TIFF, DXF, JPEG and many others.
To perform in-building collection, simply pick
a starting point and an ending point on the
floor plan and data is mapped in the same
manner as drive test data.

Configure Tool Bar

The X-TEL Xi software includes a useful

toolbar that includes the most often used
commands such as enable hardware, start
test, etc. The engineer can use the Configure
Tool Bar option to select any menu item for the
tool bar. Multiple tool bars can be defined per
technology, saved and then loaded with a test
profile.

GSM / EDGE / WCDMA Product Overview

Technology Menu Filter

X-TEL’s Xi software supports all wireless mobile
technologies including AMPS, TDMA, GSM, CDMA,
WCDMA and iDEN. However, engineers may wish to filter
out the technologies not in use in the market to reduce the
number of menu items within the software. The Technology
Menu Filter allows the engineer to select the technologies of
interest and then all applicable menus within the Xi software
will only show features applicable to those technologies.

Cell Site Database Conversion and Display

Recognizing that the frequency plan of a wireless mobile system is an ever-evolving project, the
GSM/WCDMA HCU includes automatic cell site database import filters. X-TEL supports the most
popular propagation tools including Wizard and Planet as well as many custom filters per needs
of specific markets.

Once the cell site database is created,

databases are selected and assigned to each
test mobile within the GSM Xi software. Multiple
databases can be used for overlay testing, e.g.,
for GSM and WCDMA.

Data Merging and Data Reduction

The X-TEL Xi software provides the capability to merge multiple data files into one while
simultaneously reducing the data being written to a new output file. This feature provides many
benefits for the user, including the ability to create large-scale plots with little or no overlap of data
points. By reducing test data based on distance, attribute symbols are viewed more easily in map
form, allowing faster analysis of larger areas.
