Since the company's inception in 1994, X-TEL has exhibited a unique ability to anticipate future
customer needs, respond rapidly to special requests for customized products, and provide world-
class product support. Our history is one of innovative firsts: X-TEL's drive test tools were the first
to integrate a real-time mapping interface; the first to build a portable, fully expandable, modular
platform for both in-building and vehicular data collection; and the first to support a variety of
wireless test mobiles so operators can optimize using more than one piece of subscriber
equipment. X-TEL achieved yet another major technical milestone with the completion of our
overlay GSM/EDGE/WCDMA simultaneous data collection and analysis configuration. Designed
to support all major digital phone standards, our technology offers more scanning devices, more
phone technologies, and more data collection bandwidth than any other drive test tool in the
industry. X-TEL’s flexible platform provides the ability to add ITU PESQ MOS scoring and remote
control of drive test units using the most advance autonomous system on the market – Xi
Autonomous. X-TEL supports GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS and HSDPA tools positioning X-
TEL's products for third generation (3G) wireless technologies and beyond.
X-TEL's success is due to the ingenuity and dedication of our people. With our headquarters

Introduction
Wireless networks continue to grow rapidly as wireless communication becomes a normal part of
everyday life. New technology introductions, zoning limitations and new data applications are just
a few of the challenges engineers have to address to keep the network optimized. It is critical for
performance engineers to identify and resolve network problems quickly to limit the impact on end
users and ultimately the company’s bottom line.
X-TEL’s GSM/WCDMA systems provide real-time problem identification and post collection
analysis utilities to assist engineers in troubleshooting and fixing network issues. X-TEL tools are
designed to alert the engineer immediately when a problem occurs and then to provide the
capability to quickly identify the underlying cause. Most problems can be identified and corrected
while the engineer is still in the field. This reduces the impact for wireless customers and
improves overall business for the operator.
Real-Time Display
The real-time display shows a host of network performance and engineering criteria alongside a
moving map depicting vehicle position, base station proximity, and user configurable display
options of RxLev, RxQual, Hopping, AMR and more. Various voice and data scenarios may be
preprogrammed to minimize user involvement while testing. Audible alarms utilizing Windows
standard wave files alert users when network problems are detected. Heads-Up-Display views
provide key user defined real time data.
Standard Features
Key Benefits
Modularity
The X-TEL GSM/WCDMA system supports a wide range of phone technologies. These include
support for test mobiles across TDMA, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, CDMA, 1XRTT, WCDMA/HSDPA
and iDEN technologies. X-TEL also supports industry grade dedicated scanners for TDMA, GSM
and WCDMA. Its sophisticated internal bus architecture supports up to 26 ports for system
expansion. An easy to use plug and play platform allows engineers to change phone and
scanner configurations based on their technology requirements. The cost of upgrading and
expanding the HCU platform is very economical when compared with other test systems in the
industry.
Real-Time Display
The X-TEL GSM/WCDMA system is easy to operate and offers the flexibility of choosing
parameters that are of interest to engineers to display on the map in real-time. With just the click
of a button, the real-time map can be configured to display different phone and cell site attributes,
allowing engineers to make critical decisions faster. Street networks from any MapInfo
compatible source can be loaded and displayed to further assist engineers with troubleshooting
problem areas. Along with the real-time map display, user configurable graphs, charts and text
displays of GSM and WCDMA parameters are tailored to assure easy understanding.
Playback Mode
Engineers can use the X-TEL GSM/WCDMA system to playback test data collected in the field.
Maps, graphs, charts and other displays viewed during playback function the same as in real-
time. The speed of the playback is adjustable, offering engineers more control in post data
collection analysis. Other controls allow the user to jump forward and backward to specific data
points within the playback file. Audible alerts are active during playback, just like in real-time.
Rush Street Mobile provides additional playback features such as synchronizing all display
windows to play back data based on user defined criteria like low signal strength, pilot pollution or
dropped calls.
Post Processing
Fast, reliable post processing of data integrated into MapInfo is yet another reason why the
X-TEL GSM/WCDMA system is so popular with users today. Drive test map generation can be
performed in the field or at the office. It is fully automated with customizable map attributes and
layouts. Hundreds of maps can be generated quickly with little effort or training. Advanced
analysis tools include dB Adjust to dynamically change signal strength of one or more channels
and then see the effects on best server maps. This tool is ideal for performing “what if” scenarios
for new sites with test transmitter data.
The GSM/WCDMA Real-Time / Playback map display accurately depicts vehicle position, cell
locations and local streets. The vehicle path can be configured to display critical GSM/WCDMA
parameters such as RSSI/RxLev or FER. Or display WCDMA parameters such as the primary
and secondary scrambling codes, primary CPICH Ec/I0 and UTRA carrier RSSI. The color of the
path drawn is also user configurable, providing another convenient way for these parameters to
be viewed. Rush Street adds to these capabilities by allowing the engineer to view multiple
phones and parameters simultaneously.
WCDMA Intra
Status Screen
The X-TEL WCDMA
Intra Status screen
includes Phone Task
Description, Channel
Mode Status, UARFCN,
Primary Scrambling
Code, UTRA RSSI,
Target SIR, TX Power
and other key
parameters.
The Neighbor Status Display depicts the following information for GSM phones:
• Primary Scrambling
Code
• Primary CPICH Ec/Io
• Primary CPICH RSCP
• UTRA RSSI
Missing Neighbor: In this area, the phone is not reporting SC 347 as a neighbor, but the WCDMA
scanner reports that SC 347 is within the search proximity and greater than the minimum level
defined for a neighbor. There is only one active set SC so SC 347 is a potential missing neighbor.
Intra neighbors versus BER with call start and call end events overlaid as vertical green and blue
bars.
Using a tree structure, the engineer simply selects the device and the desired metrics to plot.
The window to the left with the time reference and frame type
includes a scroll bar. Users may pause the display and scroll
back in time to see the sequence of commands and actual
codecs in use.
The BSIC Scanner Chart displays the following information for GSM networks: Channels
scanned, RSSI values in dB, Color coded bar graph, BSIC for each channel when decoded and
Channels can be sorted by signal strength or limited to top 10.
Signal strength measurements are color coded per user defined thresholds and users have the
option to sort the channels by signal strength.
• RSSI Scan: Measures and reports RSSI for a given channel list
• SIR Measurements: Measures CPICH Signal to Interference Ratio (SIR).
• Rake Finger Count: Detects up to 25 multipath components of received signal.
• Timeslot (SCH) Scans: Measures and reports Eps/Io (PSCH_Ec/Io) of the
synchronization channel (SCH) at uniform instances of time during one timeslot (2560
chips).
• Pilot (CPICH) Scan: Measures and reports Ec/Io for specified pilots in the CPICH. An
example displays is shown above
DL / UL Data Transfer
The downlink and uplink GPRS data transfer screens display GPRS specific parameters in
graphical format. The graphs depict the uplink and downlink RLC/LLC throughputs, RLC/LLC
retransmissions, block error rate, allocated bandwidth and actual bandwidth used.

EDGE Capabilities
EDGE applies a new air interface modulation technique (8PSK) to increase the bit rate in the air
interface three times over conventional GMSK. The rate perceived by the user depends on
coding schemes created to protect the data against corruption. In GPRS, four different coding
schemes are available, whereas EDGE offers nine modulation and coding schemes (MCS).
These MCSs result in data rates of 8.8 to 59.2 kbits/s per timeslot. X-TEL will monitor and report
throughput and MCSs in use via the Serving Cell Display presented above.
X-TEL’s GSM system will display and collect the following metrics:
• Uplink/Downlink Application Throughput
• Mean_BEP, CV_BEP
• IP Address
• RLC Uplink Throughput
• RLC Uplink Retransmissions
• RLC Downlink Throughput
• RLC Downlink Retransmissions

Once the template is selected and executed, Rush Street displays the parameter on the map.
The display below shows both RSSI and RxQual Sub for the entire drive route. By default each
selected parameter is plotted at the collected latitude and longitude point.
The Offset utility was used below to move the RxQual plot to the left for easier viewing.
X-TEL provides a complete catalog of plot preview templates for each technology.
Engineers also have the ability to customize each template or create templates of their own using
the edit template utility.
The Edit utility opens existing templates and enables the user to customize each template
or create their own. Once the editor is open the user has access to every column of data
in the collected file and can define filters for each column.
Below, the events have been added to the previous plots of RSSI and RxQual Sub.
Data Binning
Xi supports data binning within the Plot Preview utility in Rush Street. Simply select the data file
and DataBin Plot Template to generate binned data maps. The feature calculates the average of
the selected metric in each bin and displays these bins in user defined color ranges.
Seek Playback is a powerful analysis tool that allows detailed playback of specific events at a
user controlled speed.
One important aspect of Rush Street is the ability to perform detailed analysis in the field. There
is no need to return to a central location for traditional post processing that can often be
cumbersome and inefficient. Engineering productivity increases rapidly when using Rush Street
to diagnose and correct issues in near real time.
Xi Report Generator
Xi includes an automated Key Performance Indicator (KPI) report generator. Users choose a
local file or a file stored on the FTP server that was stored from autonomous data collection. A
device or test slot is selected with the appropriate KPI reports from the selected technology type.
The report generator creates a Microsoft Excel workbook with a worksheet assigned to each KPI
report.
Batch processing is also available to create reports for benchmarking across multiple data
collection devices.
Xi Configuration Utilities
X-TEL’s GSM Xi data collection and analysis software includes many useful utilities to assist the
engineer in locating and correcting network anomalies.
Display Tabs
The Display Tabs feature allows the users to toggle between different sets of display windows by
clicking on a tab-strip loaded at the bottom of the main Xi screen. The users can share profiles
with other users without affecting the hardware configurations, color ranges, and other software
settings.
Six unique display layouts can be accessed. The first tab will always be the Xi.ini, and once
selected, it will load the display windows saved in this file. The configuration for a set of display
windows is saved as an “.ini” file.
This feature becomes even more powerful when a tablet PC is used with a touch screen. The
engineer can then change the display by simply touching the buttons.
Configure test mobiles to automatically send SMS messages via the Dialer utility.
WAVE files provide an audible alert whenever a user defined parameter threshold is exceeded or
the selected event (handover, dropped call, end call, etc.) is completed.
