Sally Geary played tag team with our Chair, Megan,

as they introduced Chris and Rachel from Wild Melbourne, plus Mark from UN Youth. It was great to
hear the enthusiasm these young people have for
their causes, and more importantly the time they
volunteer to support youth in our communities. We
also welcomed Chloe Newrick, a Rotarian who has
moved into the area, looking for a new club.

Living up to our theme Light up Rotary, our Sabu

team returned having successfully introduced the
solar power projects to the island, plus support for
all the other activities we have running on an ongoing basis.
Chris, Malcolm and myself represented Beaumaris
at the Cluster meeting co-ordinated by Hampton,
where we had discussions about what we might do
for Rotary Day early in 2015. We will potentially
hold an event on the main ground level in Southland, followed by a special Light up the Beach in
Bayside.
Trish, Wolf and Rob represented us at the first
Cluster Primary School Speech Contest, where I
am pleased to announce that Beaumaris Primary
had the winning contestant, plus the teachers, parents and students really enjoyed the night

In case you didnt see the article, we now have

a new Bayside Mayor, Felicity Frederico. We
will introduce our club to her in coming weeks.
Beaumaris was mentioned a few times at the
Presidents meeting. Through Richard Jones
initiative, we had Resilient Youth present to
District, and it generated an awareness of a potential project for District and beyond. A link to
their website is included below, and they will
talk to our club in 2015.
http://resilientyouth.org.au/
We also had a brief mention, in the fact that we
consistently supported District Conference with
a large contingent of members and partners.
Lets continue that reputation in 2015 at Ballarat.
Remember we are not back at Victoria Golf
Club until 11 December. However we do have
a lot on, and next week will see us honing our
golf parking skills, and the all-important Beaumaris Concourse Festival.

For details see Roys email of 17 November.

Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday.

as contribute to our communitys broader appreciation of Victorian ecosystems. They wish

to assist people in developing a broader appreciation of the natural world by bringing that
world closer.
Who They Are:
Wild Melbourne is comprised of individuals educated in the biological sciences who are passionate about our native flora, fauna and ecosystems.

Why They Do It:

Because the world is beautiful. It is astonishingly complex and astoundingly diverse. Wild
Melbourne seeks to educate people throughout
Victoria so that they may be better equipped to
understand and appreciate this world. In the
face of pressures such as habitat fragmentation, over-fishing, elevated greenhouse gas
In recognition of this the Club provided $1000

What They Do:
Wild Melbourne hikes, treks and dives throughout Victoria, exploring the wild places around
our capital city. By documenting their experiences and writing about the wildlife and wild
places they visit, they hope to encourage understanding and appreciation within our community. Their aim is to enhance the Victorian
public's understanding of native Australian wildlife, science and environmental matters, as well

capital to produce a film to further the promotion of Wild Melbourne.

UN Youth
Mark James told
us about the aims
and workings of
UN Youth.
UN Youth Australia is a national
youth-led organisation that aims to
educate and empower young Australians on global
issues facing the
world. They know
that young leaders have the vision, and the
passion to create meaningful change within
their communities and the world, and aim to
equip them with the skills and inspiration to do
so.
At UN Youth Australia, they educate over
15,000 young Australians each year about international issues, the role of the UN, and the
part they themselves can play in creating
change within the global community. The activities are run for youth and by youth, and everything they do is aimed at empowering young
people to be leaders on the world stage. UN
Youth Australia is run entirely by a team of over
1,000 extremely dedicated volunteers, all aged
16-25. They are one of the only organisations
focused on empowering young people with
skills in education, in design, in leadership, in
organisation, in diplomacy and in negotiation to
execute their vision
In February 2013 they surveyed how their volunteers contributed to the organisation, They
have over 1,000 volunteers who, if paid at minimum wage, donate over $2.7 million per annum
to educating young Australians through the
work they do with the organisation.
They run a range of programs which are designed to provide empowerment through edu-

cation, and give students opportunities to get

involved in their community. Within Australia,
they organise a National Youth Conference, Evatt (a national Model UN competition),
Voice (a national public speaking competition)
and a wide variety of state and territory events.
Internationally, they coordinate educational
tours of Europe, East Timor, the Middle
East and New Zealand for secondary school
students, and a tour of the USA for tertiary students.
They also work directly with the Australian Government to promote youth empowerment.
They are a founding member of the Australian
Youth Forum and frequently make submissions
to Senate inquiries on topics relevant to youth.
Most importantly, in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, they
nominate an Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations General Assembly,
who joins the Australian Delegation to the UN
each year as an accredited diplomat bringing
the issues facing young Australians onto an international stage.
They are also supported by a large and growing community of alumni, organised by the UN
Youth Australia Foundation. The foundation works to provide long term funding to UN
Youth Australia, helping expand their volunteer
capacity and work in remote and disadvantaged areas.
All of the work that they do at UN Youth is rooted in the belief that young people can and do
make a difference in their communities. They
foster ideas and innovation, and they give
young people the inspiration and support they
need to create change.

Birth of a Planet
The astonishingly detailed photo reveals the
planet-forming dust disk around the infant
star HL Tau. Only one million years old, HL
Tau sits in the constellation Taurus, the Bull,
and is some 450 light-years from Earth.
Our own Earth was born more than 4.5 billion years ago from a similar "protoplanetary"
disk, explaining astronomers' interest in witnessing planetary origins around a nearby
star.
The HL Tau disk image turned up thanks to
the high-resolution radio imaging capabilities
of the Atacama Large Millimeter/
submillimeter Array (ALMA). It allowed scientists to view never-before-seen rings separated by gaps in the dust disk. Inside these
cleared regions around the newly formed
star, planets are currently beginning
to form, astronomers believe.
