Strength of the Material

Exercise 4.
Giventhe following light ship condition, determineW (T/m) and M (T/m). Also you have to consider wave with amplitude 2m
and the lenght that is the same as the ship, in our case 100m in both case sagging and hogging. Draw the load distribution,
shear force and bending moment diagrams, find max. moment. Make the long. system scantling of ship and find stress

Strength of the Material

Calculation of W and M
To defind W and M as a first step we will calculate the buoyancy force and also we we have to defind where is the position of
buoyancy force. The buoyancy force acting in the centroid of volume that is under the water. The shape underwater is
trapezoid, so to defind the centroid we can devide the shape in two parts: rectangle(4,5x100) and triangle (1x100).
The buoyancy forse with dencity of water 1025 kg/m3.

BF = 500 16 1.025 = 8200T

The position of buoyancy forse on X axis is:

X A = 50 450 + 66.7 50 = 22500 + 3335 = 51.67 m

Equation for calculating MandW, momentequation is around center (50m):

Now when we calculate our weight we will calculate shear forces and bending moment for cases when we have a wave for
case of sagging and hogging. To defind the shear force and bending moment we will devide our ship in 40 parts (each pards
is =2.5m).

Strength of the Material

Shear forces and bending moment for case of hogging

Our weight is sum of W+M. From the 0 to 80m the load is only W, and from 80 to 100m the load is W+M.
The spacing from 0 to 100 is =5m

The table is imported from the program numbers witch is similar to excel. Integrate in tabular form using Trapezoidal Rule,
with spacing =2.5m. Ive made correction for the bending moment calculations due to my integration method that
becomes not so accurate.

Ship scantling
The scantling has done by ongitudinal system. There is no transverse bulkheads considered on this exercises. The frames
and the girder are identical in dimensions, so that both elements share the load and support each other.
We adopt the following values in the exercise:
