PROFESSIONAL DETAILS
Nilekani became the Chief Executive Officer of Infosys in

March 2002, taking over from Murthy.

He joined Mumbai-based Patni Computer Systems where
he was interviewed by N.R. Narayana Murthy.
He left Infosys on 9 July 2009 to serve as the chairperson of
the Unique Identification Authority of India, in the rank of
a cabinet minister under invitation from the Prime
Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh.
He co-founded Indias National Association of Software
and Service Companies (NASSCOM) as well as the
Bangalore Chapter of The Ind US Entrepreneurs.
He has an estimated net worth of the Indian rupee
equivalent of US$1.3 billion. In 2009, Time magazine placed
Nilekani in the Time 100 list of 'World's Most Influential
People.

Early Career
Upon graduating from IIT, Nandan attended an interview
at Patni Computers. He was interviewed by N R Narayana
Murthy, who was to later become his mentor, guide and
philosopher. Nandan and Narayana Murthy worked
together from 1978-1981. When Narayana Murthy left Patni
Computers, his entire division also resigned.
What followed next was the success story of Infosys.
Infosys went on from strength to strength from extremely
humble beginnings and fledgling seed capital. It was the
enthusiasm, commitment, hard work and organisational
skills of the early Infoscians Narayana Murthy, S D
Shibulal, Nandan Nilekani , N S Raghavan and Kris
Gopalakrishnan that saw the company become the face of
Indias IT industryover the next two decades.

Career at Infosys
Nandan Nilekani became the Chief Executive Officer
of Infosys in March 2002 upon Narayana Murthys
relinquishing the post. In 2007, as per the succession
policy at Infosys, he relinquished his post to Kris
Gopalakrishnan and assumed the mantle of CoChairman.
In 2009, Nandan Nilekani was appointed as head of
the Unique Identification Authority of India with the
rank of Cabinet Minister, a position which he currently
holds.

LEAVING INFOSYS
Leaving Infosys was not an easy decision. As founders we had the
understanding that if somebody had to leave it would be with the
consent and approval of others. When you have been together for
30 years you just dont walk off and leave, says Nilekani. Initially,
he says he felt an emotional void, and even today he has to remind
himself not to use the pronoun we when describing Infosys. I
was very comfortable in my world. I was doing well and could have
stayed on at Infosys till the age of 60. I didnt have to do this
nandan says.
REASON- Part of the reason was that he was restless. I thrive on
challenges and new intellectual issues. I had to show that I could
execute something outside my normal world. So there was that
desire to prove myself again. The other was the feeling that he
needed to give something back to the country. I come from that
part of India which had a good run. I had the right education,
went to IIT, and was here when liberalization happened. I was
fortunate to be an entrepreneur in that time, rose to the top of my
company and benefited hugely in many ways, he says. He felt it
was now time to give back.

LAST DAT AT INFOSYS

I am generally very articulate but this is not the day or place where I
can be articulate. Ive been wrapped up in INFOSYS for 28 years. My
only identity is Infosys. I will be going to lead a programme to give
identity to every Indian. But today I am losing my identitybut in my new
role, I am supposed to work with 600 government departments knowing
fully well that no two government departments get along with one
other.
-NANDAN NILEKANI

Nandan Nilekani's journey from Rs

200 to Rs 7,700 crores
With nearly Rs 8,000 crore worth declared assets, former Aadhar Chairman Nandan Nilekani may be the richest candidate so far
this election.
The cofounder of Infosys who is fighting his maiden election from the high-profile constituency of Bangalore South says his
wealth is his resume and not the assets.
He turned down a plush job offer after graduating from Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, in 1978 with just Rs 200 in his
pocket. Mr Nilekani and his family today have assets worth nearly Rs 8,000 crore.
The Congress candidate from Bangalore South filed his nomination papers which put his assets at Rs 7,700 crore and counting,
including a resort-like sprawling house in Bangalore's prime Koramangala area and several luxury cars.
"I am not in politics to make more money. I am here for change, to bring about a change. I made my money in an honest way.
And I have declared it all. By co-founding Infosys along with Mr Murthy and others, I earned financially. And now I am here to
bring about change and politics is that lever for change," said Mr Nilekani.
Much of his wealth is in the form of shares in the IT firm Infosys which he cofounded in 1981. He and his wife Rohini Nilekani
together hold close to three per cent shares of the IT giant.
The arguably richest MP candidate so far took a dig at his opponents and several others in politics, who are reluctant to declare
assets in full. His opponent in the constituency - five-time MP Ananth Kumar, for instance, has declared assets worth less than
Rs 15 lakh, including one Reva electric car on his name.
"My transactions are above board, I do not have money deposited in others accounts and have transparently declared all assets.
My real wealth is however my experience as cofounder of Infosys and as Aadhar Chairman which gave away 60,000 crore identity
cards to people of India as promised. This experience is what will work in my favour and I am very confident of winning
Bangalore South because people and voters here want change and want a clean person," Mr Nilekani added.

POLITICS
Nilekani joined Indian
National Congress in
March 2014 and
contested from
the Bangalore South
constituency where he
lost by 228,575
votes[13] to BJP candida
te Ananth Kumarin
the 2014 Lok Sabha
election.[14]

UID PROJECT-ISSUES AND

CHALLENGES
Dr. Nandan Nilekani, chairman of UIDAI, was welcomed by Himanshu Vyas,
chairman of IACC, Gujarat branch. Himanshu Vyas, said that Dr. Nandan Nilekani
had chosen to at least temporarily give up his primary calling as a technocrat and
technology entrepreneur, and devote his time and energy to a highly ambitious
national project. It is a project of great consequence simply because it will
eventually bring hundreds of millions of Indians out of the shadow of anonymity
and make them an important part of our nation-building, Himanshu Vyas said and
added that he wanted to extend his cooperation to Dr. Nilekani as he went about
implementing the Unique Identification project. Gujarat has some unique
management and organizational skills, which could be useful in the project.
The key purpose of the project, Nilekani highlighted, was the power of inclusiveness. It
would improve all sections of the country.
Dr. Nilekani addressed an audience of more than 1,000 businessmen and students of
the city, as part of the Lincoln Lecture Series. The other dignitaries, who were
present on the dais, were Rupesh Shah, president of GCCI, Narendra Patel, senior
vice chariman of IACC, Hetal Dave, vice chairman of IACC, and Rajan Vasa, past
chairman of IACC.

ENCOURAGED TOWARDS
ENTREPRENURSHIP AND INNOVATION
Nandan Nilekani has said that the
government needs to create platforms for
entrepreneurs and innovation to flourish in
the country. Nilekani said that the UID
platform was created after looking at the two
successful innovations that took place in the
US namely, internet and GPS. Both became
platforms for numerous entrepreneurs and
startups. Citing the example of Aadhar Card,
he said, platforms lead to expansion. Aadhar
cards have led to creation of an infrastructure
of unique identity of people, digital
authentication of a person, electronic KYC
(Know Your Customer) and capability of
creating a financial address.
