BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
The author is born on the 16th day of April, 1991 to Mr. Manuel B. Zaragosa
Jr. and Mrs. Sarah N. Zaragosa at Bolton Extension, Davao City. Since she was five,
her family moved to Tagun City and decided to stay there for good.
She had spent her elementary years at Magugpo Pilot Central Elememtary
School where she graduated year 2003. Later, she experienced the wonders of high
school at Tagum City National Comprehensive High School and graduted in the year
2007. During her four-year stint at Region XIs Most Effective School, she hhad
dedicated her time for environment preservation by being active at the Philippine
Society of Youth Science Club, Inc.
Enwrapped with her desire to preserve her cause of preserving the
environment, she took up Bachelor of Science in Forestry at the University of
Southeastern Philippines.
She presently lives at Capitol Homes Uraya Subdivisions in Mankilam,
Tagum City. During her spare time, she loves to surf the worldwide web and wishes
to travel the world someday.

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION
The worlds rich forests are an important treasure to peoples around the globe.
We benefit from the biological processes of the plants and trees as well as the byproducts that are sourced from it. Without our forests, we will have much lower life
longevity, in terms not only of consumer products but also of the environment.
Products that directly or indirectly came from the forests can be found all around our
homes. Many of these we use every day are taken for granted.
Forests are an essential part of our environment as well as in our ecological system.
Trees help cool the temperature, provide food, shade and homes for wildlife and
supply oxygen into the air. They are also important to minimize the effects of air
pollution. Often, particles in the air are trapped on the leaves of trees and adhere until
the rain washes the cause of pollution off. Through this process, forests can act as an
important ally in the fight against air pollution.
Many groups are working hard toward trying to identify forest trees as an essential
part of our environment. Foresters and loggers consider trees not only as a part of our
environment but also as an essential fiber of our lives by means of making a living.
Being able to identify and classify trees is an important part of the study of forestry. It
is difficult to communicate with other people about trees if you cannot call them by
their common and/or scientific names. Trees are indentified using various methods
such as leaf shape and type, bark texture, twig shape and tree size. Leaf shape,
hardwood or softwood, evergreen or deciduous is also being used.
Trees generally add a growth ring each year. This means that you can estimate the age
of a harvested tree by counting the annual growth rings of the stump. Foresters often
need to know the age of growing tree in order to make management decisions. A tree
with a small diameter may in fact be older than a tree with a large diameter. This may
be due to better growing conditions, genetics of the tree and or by other factors.
Knowing the true age of the group of trees aids the foresters to make decisions
regarding thinking, clear-cutting and other management practices.
This study identified the existing floras of the University of Southeastern Philippines
Tagum Campus in the anticipation that will be a future reference for researches in
the taxonomy of trees.
1. To name and identify the floras of USeP-Tagum Campus specifically the woody
plants.
2. To be able to describe based on their morphological characteristics
3. To be able to know the number of species of USeP-Tagum Campus.
4. To be able to measure the biggest diameter of each species in the area.
5. Produce photographs of the tree species.
The study is limited only to the tree only to the tree species found in the study
area. It focuses on taxonomic description and classification, which include economic
importance. The study is restricted only on tree species which has five (5) , and ten
(10) centimeters above in diameter.
The significance of this research is to find out the present status of remaining
woody tree species found in the study area.

Species Identification
It is possible to identify many of our native trees by looking at their leaves.
Strictly speaking, identification should involve examination of the flowers (petals,
sepals, stamen etc.), which are far less variable than leaves. However, in most cases, it
is possible to make an identification using just a few features of the leaves and twigs.
In identifying a species we should be observable throughout the lift of a tree.
