GALVALUME PLUSTM, THE LATEST IMPROVEMENT

Organic-Resin Coating On
Galvalume PlusTM Enhances Performance
During the past 30 years,
GalvalumeTM sheet has established
itself as the premier steel roofing
product. It has many features that
make it an ideal product for roofing, such as high strength, light
weight, excellent heat reflectivity,
as well as being environmentally
responsible and cost-competitive.
But the most important feature
that separates it from other coated
steel products and many nonmetallic roof products is its excellent
corrosion resistance and long-term
durability to the elements in the
atmosphere. Time and experience
have demonstrated that
GalvalumeTM sheet is the ideal
coated steel product for metal roof
systems. Early GalvalumeTM sheet
samples are still rust-free after 36
years of atmospheric testing.
The unique aluminum-zinc
alloy coating on GalvalumeTM
sheet is responsible for its long
life. It combines the best features
of aluminum and zinc coatings
and has a service life at least twice
that of galvanized steel of equivalent coating thickness. Dofasco
has been producing this product
since 1983.

1. Painted GalvalumeTM and unpainted Galvalume PlusTM were used extensively

for cladding throughout the Sydney Olympic facilities.

Latest Improvement
Dofasco now has Galvalume
PlusTM commercially available in
Canada. This clear, thin organicresin coating is applied on the production line to both sides of the
strip under carefully controlled
conditions. The clear coating protects against handling and installation marking, enhances uniform
weathering, serves as a lubricant
for roll forming and provides storage and transit corrosion protection. It should be pointed out that
GalvalumeTM is also still available
with a conventional chemical
treatment to provide protection
during storage and transit. As we
stated in an earlier issue, the

organic-resin coating of Galvalume

PlusTM is not intended to be a substitute for paint. Galvalume PlusTM
is intended for applications such as
pre-engineered buildings, industrial and commercial roofing and
cladding, building accessories,
light steel framing and construction tubular. If a painted appearance is desired, then prepainted
GalvalumeTM should be specified

using the wide range of factory

applied proven colours. Prepainted
GalvalumeTM is typically specified
for architectural panels, sloped
roofing, wall cladding and many
other building components.
Solar Reflectance
During the past few years, solar
reflectance of roofs has become
an important issue. Both the

Environmental Protection Agency

(EPA) and the Department of
Energy (DOE) in the U.S. have
been devoting resources to develop information about the effect of
solar reflectance on building energy cooling requirements and costs.
Reflective roof surfaces result in
reduced solar heat transmission
into buildings, which reduces energy cooling requirements and ulti-

mately air pollution because of

reduced power generation.
The EPA launched its Energy
Star Roof Products Program at
the National Roofing Contractors
Association (NRCA) Convention
in February 1999. It announced
the membership of Energy Star
Program Charter Partners at a special launching ceremony. Thirtythree metal roofing manufacturers

Dofasco is a member of the
Galvalume Sheet Producers of
North America, who recently contracted with Oak Ridge National
Laboratories (ORNL) to measure
the solar reflectance of Galvalume
PlusTM roofs in comparison with
BUR, single ply, asphalt and pre-

painted metal. The ORNL is a

U.S. national lab used by the
Department of Energy and is
actively engaged in building projects directed to energy conservation. Their measurements indicated that GalvalumeTM and Galvalume

Program and can be sold with a
U.S. Energy Star label.

soft spangle finish of the batten

by Ideal Roofing, along with the
buildings cedar log walls, is perfectly suited to the sugar bush and
the provinces long tradition as a
maple syrup producer. The profile of the ribs is Heritage, with a
508 mm (20-inch) spacing between
ribs. This is typical of the old sugar
shacks, says project architect
Richard Schmidt. Where the usual
sugar shack is utilitarian and practical, this building, which belongs
to the Auberge des Gallant Country
Inn, is palatial by comparison.
The 29.3 m 17.1 m (96' 56')
structure has boiling off and kitchen
facilities in the back. Guests in the
reception/dining area in the front
of the building dine under a post
and beam cathedral ceiling. Windows on three sides and a wraparound verandah keep guests close
to the exquisite setting. Two large
fireplaces and granite chimneys
match the light grey colour of the
gable roof and eaves. Traditional
pancake and syrup meals will be
served when the sap rises in the
spring, but the multi-purpose building is already heavily booked for
weddings and receptions. The owners were ready to invest in a highquality roof that still resembled the
other sugar shacks, says Schmidt.

Projects Reviewed
In our News section, we show just a few of the exam ples of steel cladding and other steel components
published in the architectural press. You can obtain

Steel roofing, cladding and steel structural components are used in both functional and innovative
designs, for a variety of facilities, as described in the
following magazine articles that we have highlighted.
An interesting article by Eric C.Y. Fang, AIA, in
the May 1998 issue of Architectural Record, describes
the renovation and restoration of the 80 block neighbourhood south of Market Street 1 & 2 in San
Francisco. Mr. Fang is an architect and urban designer
with Skinmore, Owings & Merrill in San Francisco.

As described by Lisa Findley in the October 2000

issue of Architectural Record, the Anderson/Ayers
house 3 & 4 in western Marin County, California, is
modest on the outside with its simple forms, green
and grey siding, and green and grey metal roof,
[and] blends masterfully with its surroundings, making it seem like an extension of the landscape.
According to Aaron Betsky, the heart of Holt
Hinshaws design for the 5,395 m2 (58,000 ft2) San
Jose Repertory Theatre is the metaphor of a magic
box. The buildings exterior skin, stretched and
fragmented over lobbies, offices, and theatre service
spaces, appears as a series of planes that fold over
each other in order to respond to different external
geometries 5 & 6. The roll formed steel panels with
their blue metallic pigment and clear resin coat
accomplish a double phenomenon of merging with
both light and dark. (Architecture, February 1999)
In the words of company management, the goal
for the new New York Times printing plant 7 & 8
was to minimize operations, maintenance and capital costs as well as obtain a high-design building
constructed with inexpensive but good-quality materials. To achieve their objectives the architectural
firm of Poleshek and Partners incorporated extensive use of glass curtain wall and prepainted steel
cladding. (Architectural Record, May 1998)

Dofascos website has been recently updated.
Like other websites, it has various listings. One of
these is Products & Markets, which is structured
so that you can get to the market segment and
subsegment of your choice quickly. For example,
within each segment, products typically used for
various applications are clearly shown. To reach
Dofascos construction website:

Then select the specific construction market seg-

ment you are interested in: commercial/industrial/institutional building applications; agricultural; residential; infrastructure; tubular.

Useful Tips When Designing

With Light Steel Framing (LSF)

Each market segment clearly outlines the steel

products that can be used for specific applications
within that market segment.

When framing with steel, spend a little extra time

previewing plans and doing takeoffs. While many
designers, contractors and subcontractors may find
this an extra burden, it can be a blessing in disguise.
By spending a few extra hours in the office detailing
and laying out the plans, you can save twice that
amount of time in the field. Crews are not left standing around waiting for missing materials to be delivered. Also, the detail plans show them exactly where
each piece of steel is to be used. Finally, most of the
material is ordered precut, which eliminates the need
for cutting and saves time and labour.

DOFASCO STEEL DESIGN 1-01

GALVALUMETM STANDING SEAM ROOF STUDY 1999

25+ Years Proven Performance

Youre busy. You have to choose a new roof
for your building. You dont relish the thought
of taking time out to research roofing materials.
You know you need something thats long-lasting and a good valueso you wont have to
think about your roof again for a long, long
time. With a Galvalume PlusTM standing seam
roof (SSR), thats just what youll get.
Experienced roof designers have recognized
GalvalumeTM sheet steel as the ideal material
for standing seam roofing systems since it was
introduced in the United States in 1972, and in
Canada by Dofasco in 1983. With its 55 percent aluminum-zinc alloy coating, GalvalumeTM
sheet steel resists corrosion in North Americas
harshest environments. Thats what makes it
perfect for all kinds of buildings from
marine to industrial to rural.
Owners can count on GalvalumeTM
SSRs to outperform and outlast other
roofing systems, with fewer and less frequent repairs, and that means better longterm value. To prove it, manufacturers of
GalvalumeTM sheet steel periodically
inspect the roofs in their natural environ-

ments. They already knew in 1972 that

GalvalumeTM sheet steel performed well in the
laboratory, but the true test was how it would
perform in the elements. So experienced roof
designers and metallurgists have inspected
roofs in parts of the country with some of the
most corrosive environments. What theyve
found is that all the well drained GalvalumeTM
SSRs they inspected are sound after 25 years
of exposure, and they can be expected to last
another 10 to 15 years without any major
maintenance. With this kind of long-term performance and their low incidence of maintenance, it is no wonder that GalvalumeTM SSRs
have the lowest life-cycle costs compared to
other typical commercial or industrial roofing

systems. So if a GalvalumeTM SSR lasts at least

25 years with few repairs, its life-cycle cost is
even lower than the average standing seam
metal roof not made from GalvalumeTM or
Galvalume PlusTM. For every year it lasts
beyond that, the life-cycle cost goes down
even more. Thats value. The accompanying
photos compare 20- and 25-year-old
GalvalumeTM SSRs as they appeared in 1994
and in 1999. Its apparent from these photos
that not much has changed in five years, which
just goes to show how well GalvalumeTM SSRs
hold up after prolonged use in all kinds of
environments.
The Bottom Line
The 1999 inspection proved that nearly
all the low-sloped GalvalumeTM SSRs
tested continue to perform well in a variety of environments, even after 25 years.
More importantly, well drained
GalvalumeTM SSRs that are 25 years old
or more are predicted to provide at least
another 10 to 15 years of useful life without any major panel repairs.

These 25-year-old GalvalumeTM SSR panels
with a 1/4:12 pitch show little corrosion
despite the fact that they endure severe acid
rain. This roof is in excellent condition and is
expected to last at least another 10 to 15 years
without major maintenance. The 1994 photo
shows early morning dew, while the 1999
photo is an afternoon shot.

Industrial, Acid Rain Environment

Davenport, Iowa
The 1994 inspection photo shows that the
GalvalumeTM SSR was in excellent condition
after 20 years in service. The 1999 inspection
photo shows that the same roof continues to
perform well after 25 years of service. It is predicted that this 1/2:12 pitch roof will last
another 10 years, even in this harsh industrial
environment.

Industrial Area Appleton, Wisconsin

The 1999 inspection of this 1/4:12 pitch
GalvalumeTM SSR confirmed that there has
been little change since the 1994 inspection.
The Al-Zn coating, which is more than 25
years old, was intact and protecting the steel
base. The roof, which is located near paper
mills, should last 40 years, even in the acid
rain and industrial air.

Wet and Humid Area Gulfport,

Mississippi
Installed in 1974, this GalvalumeTM SSR has
held up well in the Gulf Coast elements. After
25 years of morning dew and salt air, this
1/2:12 pitch roof shows almost no signs of
rust. Compared to the hot dipped galvanized
material on this roof, the GalvalumeTM sheet
steel has almost no corrosion, and should easily last another 10 years.

Acid Rain, Light Industrial Area

Indianapolis, Indiana
The GalvalumeTM 1/4:12 SSR on this building in
a downtown, light-industrial area of Indianapolis
has held up well after 25 years and should perform well for at least 10 more. The panels show
no signs of corrosion, blisters or pits, even under
a magnifying glass. There is little change since
the last inspection in 1994. Thats more than can
be said for the galvanized parts of the roof,
which have corroded extensively.

MESSIER-DOWTY INC., AJAX, ONTARIO

Galvalume PlusTM Standing Seam Roof

Chosen for Renovation Upgrade
Galvalume PlusTM was chosen for
a reroofing project by MessierDowty for their plant in Ajax,
Ontario, where the company
makes aluminum extrusions for jet
aircraft landing gear. The purpose
in one case was to reslope two
roofs into a single slope, and in
the other two phases to reclad the
existing 12- to 15-year-old steel
roofs, including thermal upgrades
and in one case the accommodation of new mechanical equipment.
Installation of the MR-24
standing seam roof (SSR) was carried out by MAI Steel Erectors of
Courtice, Ontario. The project
encompassed several separate
roofs installed in three separate
phases. The first, 7,622 m2
(82,000 ft2), involved a 1/2:12 low
slope, concealed fastener standing
seam roof made from unpainted
24-gauge AZM165 Galvalume
PlusTM steel, fastened through the
existing roof with a very small
insulation gap. The second phase,
comprising 744 m2 (8,000 ft2) of
24-gauge AZM165 Galvalume
PlusTM steel, involved installing
new roof framing to create a single slope (2:12) from a previously
double-sloped roof. The third roof
saw the construction of a 2,231 m2
(24,000 ft2) 1/2:12 slope roof of

unpainted AZM165 Galvalume

PlusTM, including creating a cavity
in the old roof for venting, HVAC
ducts and increased insulation. Ed
Helm, technical services manager
of Butler, says, There were several reasons for the choice of steel
again. A steel roof deck is watertight, and we could roof right over
the old roof without removal of the
old roof. He adds, The advantages of the steel roof net out to
low maintenance, and because of
its longer life its the most cost
effective solution. Or, put another
way, Sergiu Anton, facility manager at Messier-Dowty, said, Im
too poor to buy cheap.

significant benefits to this project.
As stated by architect Jean-Claude
Zerounian of Drolet Zerounian
Architects, GalvalumeTM steel provided the economy, versatility
and design possibilities that they
were looking for. The project
involved reroofing the existing
120 m2 (1,290 ft2) roof and covering the new 250 m2 (2,687 ft2)
roof and canopy. The 40-140-A
profiled roof panels are manufactured from Dofascos 24-gauge

steel, with each panel providing
1015 mm (40") of coverage. The
canopy is supported on one end by
four 144 mm (5.5") steel columns,
placed irregularly to recall tangled
skis. The roof and wall of the
canopy are unpainted 24-gauge
GalvalumeTM in a flat 12-175-S
profile with 305 mm (12") of coverage per panel.

1 & 2. Unpainted GalvalumeTM steel

was selected for the reroofing and for
the new roof according to the architects for its durability, design aesthetics (neutral tone), and for the abil-

ity to match well with the other materials used on the project.
