AFIXOS
Affixes are linguistic elements that are added to a word to produce an inflected or derived form. Affixes
can be attached to the beginning of a word (in this case, they are called prefixes) and at the end of
words (in which case they are called suffixes).
A prefix is a group of letters added before a word or base to alter its meaning and form a new word. In
contrast, a suffix is a group of letters added after a word or base.
See below for a list of affixes, that is, a list of prefixes and suffixes.

FULL - (CHEIO): Transforma substantivos em adjetivos. (Perde uma letra L).

Ex: beautiful (beauty = substantivo = beleza) + full (cheio)
adjetivo = LINDO.
hopeful (hope = substantivo = esperana) + full (cheio)
adjetivo = ESPERANOSO.
LESS - (SEM): Transforma substantives em adjetivos.
Ex: hopeless (hope = substantivo = esperana) + less (sem)
helpless (help = substantivo = socorro, ajuda) + less (sem)
TY - (DADE): Forma substantivos.
Ex: loyalty (loyal = adjetivo = leal) + ty (dade)
purity (pure = adjetivo = puro) + ty (dade)

adjetivo = DESESPERANOSO.
adjetivo = IMPRESTVEL.

substantivo = LEALDADE.
substantivo = PUREZA.

LY - (MENTE): Forma advrbios.

Ex: quickly (quick = adjetivo = rpido) + ly (mente)

advrbio = RPIDA ou RAPIDAMENTE.

PS: O sufixo LY muitas vezes pode ser omitido na traduo para o portugus.

TION - (O): Forma substantivos.

Ex: Information = INFORMAO; Celebration = CELEBRAO.
PS: O sufixo TION em quase 100% das vezes antecedido de uma palavra cognata. Ex: nation, naturalisation.

NESS - (no tem traduo): Transforma adjetivos em substantivos.

Ex: richness (rich = adjetivo = rico) + ness
substantivo = RIQUEZA.
illness (ill = adjetivo = doente) + ness
substantivo = DOENA.
OUS - (geralmente OSO): Forma adjetivos.
Ex: dangerous (danger = substantivo = perigo) + ous (oso)
(A)BLE - (geralmente VEL): Forma adjetivos.
Ex: readable (read = verbo = ler) + able (vel)

adjetivo = PERIGOSO.

adjetivo = LEGVEL.

MIS / DIS / UN / IN / IM So todos prefixos e formam NEGAO.

Exs:
Misunderstood (understood = passado do verbo understand = entender) + mis (negao)
Dislike (like = verbo = gostar) + dis (negao)
DESGOSTAR.
Unreal (real = real) + un (negao)
IRREAL.
Incorrect (correct = correto) + in (negao)
INCORRETO.
Impolite (polite = educado, polido) + im (negao)
MAL-EDUCADO.

ER - Formam substantivos e adjetivos.

Substantivos: quando for praticante da ao (no correto dizer quando formar profisses, como diz algumas
gramticas).
Ex: singer (sing = verbo = cantar) + er (quem pratica a ao de cantar)
CANTOR.
teacher (teach = verbo = ensinar) + er (quem pratica a ao de ensinar)
PROFESSOR.
follower (follow = verbo = seguir) + er (quem pratica a ao de seguir)
SEGUIDOR.

Adjetivos: quando estiverem no comparativo.

Ex: nicer (nice = adjetivo = simptico) + er (comparativo)
bigger (big = adjetivo = grande) + er (comparativo)
uglier (ugly = adjetivo = feio) + er (comparativo)

MAIS SIMPTICO QUE.

MAIOR QUE.
MAIS FEIO QUE.

Y - (geralmente OSO ou ADO): Forma adjetivos.

Ex: smoky (smoke = substantivo = fumaa) + y
adjetivo = ENFUMAADO.
rainy (rain = substantivo = chuva) + y
adjetivo = CHUVOSO.
(IC)AL - (geralmente ICO): Transforma Substantivos em adjetivos.
Pode vir das 3 formas: IC, AL ou ICAL.
Ex: genetical (genetic = substantivo = gentica) + al (ico)
adjetivo = GENTICO.
poetical (poet = substantivo = poeta) + ical (ico)
adjetivo = POTICO.
classic (class = substantivo = classe, sala) + ic (ico)
adjetivo = CLSSICO.
MENT - (MENTO): Transforma verbos em substantivos.
Ex: treatment (treat = verbo = tratar) + ment (mento)
movement (move = verbo = mover) + ment (mento)

substantivo = TRATAMENTO.
substantivo = MOVEMENTO.

HOOD - (no tem traduo): Forma substantivos abstratos.

Ex: childhood (child = substantivo = criana) + hood
brotherhood (brother = substantivo = irmo) + hood

substantivo = INFNCIA.
substantivo = IRMANDADE.

DOM - (no tem traduo): Forma substantivos.

Ex: freedom (free = adjetivo = livre) + dom
kingdom (king = substantivo = rei) + dom

substantivo = LIBERDADE.
substantivo = REINO.

SHIP - (no tem traduo): Forma substantivos abstratos.

Ex: friendship (friend = substantivo = amigo) + ship
substantivo = AMIZADE.
dictatorship (dictator = substantivo = ditador) + dom
substantivo = DITADURA.
(I)FY - (geralmente FICAR): Forma verbos.
Ex: glorify = GLORIFICAR; quantify = QUANTIFICAR.
IZE - (geralmente IZAR): Forma verbos.
Ex: civilize = CIVILIZAR; immunize = IMUNIZAR.
ING
- Verbo: Swimming is very important for your health. (Nadar)
- Substantivo: Swimming is very important for your health. (Natao)
- Adjetivo: Senac has a nice swimming pool. (Piscina de Natao - Grupo Nominal)
