Michal’s lack of respect

II Samuel 6:14-23 (International
Standard Version)
14. And David danced before the Lord with all his might, and was wearing
priests' clothing.
15. So Israel brought home the Ark of the Lord with much shouting and
blowing of trumpets.
16. (But as the procession came into the city, Michal, Saul's daughter,
watched from a window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the
Lord; and she was filled with contempt for him.)
17. The Ark was placed inside the tent which David had prepared for it; and
he sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings to the Lord.
18. Then he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of heaven,
19. and gave a present to everyone--men and women alike--of a loaf of
bread, some wine, and a cake of raisins. When it was all over, and everyone
had gone home,
20. David returned to bless his family. But Michal came out to meet him and
exclaimed in disgust, ``How glorious the king of Israel looked today! He
exposed himself to the girls along the street like a common pervert!''
21. David retorted, ``I was dancing before the Lord who chose me above
your father and his family and who appointed me as leader of Israel, the
people of the Lord! So I am willing to act like a fool in order to show my joy
in the Lord.
22. Yes, and I am willing to look even more foolish than this, but I will be
respected by the girls of whom you spoke!''
23. So Michal was childless throughout her life.

4. Are there any unresolved issues with your Dad or Mother? Are there
any areas of disappointment or unforgiveness toward your parents?

5. Over the years Michal failed to deal with the disappointments of her
life. What happened to Michal’s spiritual state of her heart?

6. When did Michal lose respect for her husband? Was it just the one
event of David dancing before the Lord or an accumulation of
resentment and long-standing anger?

Our first step in restoring a clean heart and right spirit within us
would be going before God in repentance.

Secondly, acknowledge the need to forgive your spouse for any

offense and let it go.

(Use James 5:16)

“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another,
that ye may be healed.”

Thirdly, ask the Lord to restore to you the joy of your salvation.
Root Issues in Michal’s Life
Generational Issues
• Pride – Michal wanted her agenda to be carried out, instead of God’s
agenda
o Status- Michael desired to be seen as a highly, prestigious
queen, eloquent and conservative, she did not want to be
associated with the common people
• Idolatry – Just as Saul, Michal chose to put herself first and exclude
God as her Master and King. The scripture never stated she had a
real relationship with God, but she found an idol in the house to put in
the bed for false pretense to pretend that it was David sleeping
Michal’s Wounded Soul
• Father-Daughter Relationship
o Wounded- Saul never loved Michal with genuine love, but
instead used Michal for his own political advantage.
o David conveniently took other wives
o David took her away from her first husband, whom she was in
-love with and had been married to him for 10 years
o Her Dad’s kingdom was taken away from him and given to David
Michal’s Thought Life
• Michal’s thought life was not on the goodness of the Lord
and His Majesty
• Self-Centered
• Vain-Imaginations
• Hatred
• Sarcasm
Tragedy of Disrespect in Michal’s Life
• Barrenness
• Destroyed her marriage relationship with David
