Course Information
Course Description This course examines patterns of abnormal human behavior, approaches to psychotherapy, and
the use of the scientific method for expanding our understanding of the causes of psychological disorders and the
identification and implementation of effective treatments.
Learning Objectives and Expected Outcomes After completing the course, students should be able to:
Explain the nature of psychology as a science; recognize the common research methods of psychology;
Explain major theoretical approaches (e.g. behavioral, biological, cognitive ,humanistic, psychodynamic, and
sociocultural) to understanding abnormal behavior and the interaction of mind, body and behavior.
Describe major psychological disorders, their associate features and what is now known about their causes.
Describe how various research designs address different types of questions and hypotheses, distinguish
the nature of designs that permit causal inferences from those that do not.
Integrate theoretical perspectives and empirical findings to produce comprehensive and multi-faceted
explanations of mental health and mental illness
Use critical thinking to determine how well specific facts and lines or reasoning support conclusions as well as to identify
weak, contradictory, and inappropriate assertions
Understand how scientific research on psychopathology can guide the prevention of behavioral and mental health problems and
the treatment of abnormal behavior
Demonstrate how psychological principles together with empirical research can support our understanding of important social
issues and guide development of public policy on mental health and related issues
Required Text We will read from the following text: Ronald J. Comer (2007). Abnormal Psychology (6th Edition). New
York: Worth Publishers. ISBN-13: 978-0-716-76906-4. It is very important that you read the assigned book chapters prior to the
assignment date .
Lectures To succeed in this course, it is important that you attend all lectures. Some lectures will cover material also
discussed in the text chapters; most will present additional material. Attending class is the only option for obtaining much of
the information conveyed in this course. No lecture notes will be posted on the web, and no copies of study guides or other
instructional materials will be provided for students who choose not to attend. Many lectures will include brief video clips to
illustrate particular psychological disorders, and to give us some common examples to discuss. I encourage you to ask relevant
questions during the lecture. However, there will be times that I will need to cut the questions/discussion in order to help us
maintain our schedule. If there is any change to the schedule of assigned readings, exams, research paper or course procedures
or policies, it will be announced during the lecture period. In order to be well-informed, pay attention to announcements made
during the lecture period and if you are confused, seek clarification from the instructor or TA.
Personal Mental Health Questions/Issues If you have personal mental health issues you would like to discuss, I encourage
you to bring these up during office hours rather than the class lectures. The Student Counseling Center is a valuable resource
that every registered UTD student can also access for free support in coping with stress or other mental health issues. You
may want to look at their website at http://www.utdallas.edu/counseling/ or contact them directly by phone at 972-883-2575 or
stop by their offices in the Student Union at Room 1.608.
Quizzes Quizzes and exams will assess your understanding of material presented in the lectures and in the textbook. All
quizzes, the midterm and the final exam are multiple choice, and students must bring their own scantrons to class (NCS
FORM 229630.) Quizzes cover the reading assignment for a specific date.. The questions on the pop quizzes tend to be
relatively easy for anyone who has done the readings by the assigned date. There will be seven pop quizzes. You may miss or
drop two of these. Each of the remaining five pop quizzes will count for 10% of your grade. In other words, the five pop
quizzes together count for 50% of your total grade. There are no make-ups for quizzes. Students who arrive more than
five minutes after the beginning of a pop quiz (a) will not be allowed to take it, and (b) will be considered to have missed the
quiz. Quizzes may be given at the beginning, middle or end of the class period. Normally, I will NOT announce beforehand
when the pop quizzes will be given. However, there is one exception: the first quiz will be Jan 22, 2008.
Helpful Hint The pop quizzes are intended to keep you up-to-date on the readings as set on the following schedule. Each quiz
focuses only on the reading that is due for that date. For example, I might give you a pop quiz on January 29 to see if you have
read Chapter 7, as assigned. You would be responsible for Chapter 7 whether or not I had already discussed this chapter in
lecture.
Exams There will be two exams. The first midterm exam will be on Tuesday, February 26, during the regular class time.
The midterm will cover everything studied in the course up until that date. Most questions will be about the readings, but
some will be from lectures. The midterm will count for 20% of your grade. Students who arrive more than ten minutes
after the beginning of an exam(a) will not be allowed to take it, and (b) will be considered to have missed it. The second and
final exam will be on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 from 2:30-5:15 pm. It will cover everything studied in the course after the
midterm. The final exam will count for 20% of your grade.
Missed Exams There are no make-up exams for the midterm or final unless there are truly exceptional circumstances that
can be well-documented by external sources (e.g. doctor’s note) AND you have made prior arrangement with the instructor or
TA. If you miss it without making prior arrangements, you will receive a failing grade for that exam.
Research Paper There will be a short research paper due (8-10 pages excluding title page and references) due on Tuesday,
April 08, 2008 . The paper will be counted as 10% of your course grade. It must be written using APA format and cover
one of the following issues relevant to mental health and social policy: Mental Health Parity or Mandatory Treatment for the
Seriously Mentally Ill. You will be given a separate hand-out describing this assignment in more detail during class on
February 26 following the midterm exam.
Research Participation Experimental participation is a requirement of the class. However, if you do not wish to participate
in these experiments, you may complete a second research paper. Please make an appointment with the instructor to discuss
this option.

Student Conduct & Discipline
The University of Texas System and The University of Texas at Dallas have rules and regulations for the orderly and efficient conduct of their business. It is the responsibility of each student and each
student organization to be knowledgeable about the rules and regulations which govern student conduct and activities. General information on student conduct and discipline is contained in the UTD
publication, A to Z Guide, which is provided to all registered students each academic year.
The University of Texas at Dallas administers student discipline within the procedures of recognized and established due process. Procedures are defined and described in the Rules and Regulations,
Board of Regents, The University of Texas System, Part 1, Chapter VI, Section 3, and in Title V, Rules on Student Services and Activities of the university’s Handbook of Operating Procedures. Copies
of these rules and regulations are available to students in the Office of the Dean of Students, where staff members are available to assist students in interpreting the rules and regulations (SU 1.602,
972/883-6391).
A student at the university neither loses the rights nor escapes the responsibilities of citizenship. He or she is expected to obey federal, state, and local laws as well as the Regents’ Rules, university
regulations, and administrative rules. Students are subject to discipline for violating the standards of conduct whether such conduct takes place on or off campus, or whether civil or criminal penalties
are also imposed for such conduct.
Academic Integrity
The faculty expects from its students a high level of responsibility and academic honesty. Because the value of an academic degree depends upon the absolute integrity of the work done by the student
for that degree, it is imperative that a student demonstrate a high standard of individual honor in his or her scholastic work.
Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, statements, acts or omissions related to applications for enrollment or the award of a degree, and/or the submission as one’s own work or material
that is not one’s own. As a general rule, scholastic dishonesty involves one of the following acts: cheating, plagiarism, collusion and/or falsifying academic records. Students suspected of academic
dishonesty are subject to disciplinary proceedings.
Plagiarism, especially from the web, from portions of papers for other classes, and from any other source is unacceptable and will be dealt with under the university’s policy on plagiarism (see general
catalog for details). This course will use the resources of turnitin.com, which searches the web for possible plagiarism and is over 90% effective.
Email Use
The University of Texas at Dallas recognizes the value and efficiency of communication between faculty/staff and students through electronic mail. At the same time, email raises some issues concerning
security and the identity of each individual in an email exchange. The university encourages all official student email correspondence be sent only to a student’s U.T. Dallas email address and that
faculty and staff consider email from students official only if it originates from a UTD student account. This allows the university to maintain a high degree of confidence in the identity of all individual
corresponding and the security of the transmitted information. UTD furnishes each student with a free email account that is to be used in all communication with university personnel. The Department of
Information Resources at U.T. Dallas provides a method for students to have their U.T. Dallas mail forwarded to other accounts.
Disability Services
The goal of Disability Services is to provide students with disabilities educational opportunities equal to those of their non-disabled peers. Disability Services is located in room 1.610 in the Student
Union. Office hours are Monday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Essentially, the law requires that colleges and universities make those reasonable adjustments necessary to eliminate discrimination on the basis of disability. For example, it may be necessary to remove
classroom prohibitions against tape recorders or animals (in the case of dog guides) for students who are blind. Occasionally an assignment requirement may be substituted (for example, a research
paper versus an oral presentation for a student who is hearing impaired). Classes enrolled students with mobility impairments may have to be rescheduled in accessible facilities. The college or
university may need to provide special services such as registration, note-taking, or mobility assistance.
It is the student’s responsibility to notify his or her professors of the need for such an accommodation. Disability Services provides students with letters to present to faculty members to verify that the
student has a disability and needs accommodations. Individuals requiring special accommodation should contact the professor after class or during office hours.
The student is encouraged to notify the instructor or activity sponsor as soon as possible regarding the absence, preferably in advance of the assignment. The student, so excused, will be allowed to
take the exam or complete the assignment within a reasonable time after the absence: a period equal to the length of the absence, up to a maximum of one week. A student who notifies the instructor
and completes any missed exam or assignment may not be penalized for the absence. A student who fails to complete the exam or assignment within the prescribed period may receive a failing grade
for that exam or assignment.
If a student or an instructor disagrees about the nature of the absence [i.e., for the purpose of observing a religious holy day] or if there is similar disagreement about whether the student has been given
a reasonable time to complete any missed assignments or examinations, either the student or the instructor may request a ruling from the chief executive officer of the institution, or his or her designee.
The chief executive officer or designee must take into account the legislative intent of TEC 51.911(b), and the student and instructor will abide by the decision of the chief executive officer or designee.
