Course Description
This class will focus on the initiation and cultivation of basic drawing skills. This will
include hand/eye coordination skills, rendering techniques, composition, drawing
construction, proportion and perspective.
2. Students will identify and utilize drawing terms along with historic and contemporary
artist references.
3. Students will develop, identify and discuss their own personal creative process in
which a concept develops into a completed work.
4. Students will evaluate drawings through critical dialogue both as a group and
individually.
Required Textbooks
There are no required textbooks for this course. All required readings will be provided
by the instructor. It is suggested that you purchase a binder or folder to keep these in, as
you will need to bring them to class to use them as reference materials during critiques.
Course Materials
A material list is being provided to you. A kit is available at a reduced price at Asel Art
Supply, located at the southwest corner of Beltline and Central on the service road just 3

Grading Policy
Portfolio Review (65%) – This is a review of all the works created in class (and possibly
completed at home). We will have periodic in-class critiques to discuss these works.
Grades for these assignments will be based on three criteria:
1) Concept – How much originality and creativity is involved in the student’s concept
for the piece? Did the student push themselves to take risks with the work, to try
something new? Have outside resources or influences been brought into the work?
2) Execution – Does the work fulfill the objective of the student’s initial concept? Does
it fulfill the parameters of the original assignment? Does is display an advancement of
technical skill?
3) Presentation – Is the student able to discuss their work utilizing vocabulary and
concepts introduced in the class? Are they able to do the same concerning the work of
others?
Always put the date the drawing was assigned (and/or the name of the assignment)
and your name on the BACK of the work.
Sketchbook (20%) – Students are required to keep a 14x17 sketchbook throughout the
class and do weekly at-home drawing assignments as an extension of class work. The
sketchbook must be brought to class weekly for in-class grading. Students may only use
pen and ink in their sketchbook – no erasing allowed. As you are working you may
restart any drawing you are unhappy with, but please do not tear out the abandoned
drawing. It helps me see the progress you are making.
Notebook / Class Participation (5%) – Students must keep a notebook throughout the
course containing all assigned readings as well as notes on the demonstrations and
discussions in class. These notebooks should also contain reactions to what you are
learning in class – clippings from newspapers or magazines, articles, photographs,
thumbnail sketches of ideas for drawings or other works of art, etc. I suggest getting a 3-
ring binder and filling it paper (white, graph, or lined - your choice) as well as anything
passed out in class.
Late and Make-up work – Late written assignments will result in a loss of 50% of the
grade. If you miss class the day a written assignment is due, you must e-mail the
assignment to me before the class period begins in order to receive full credit. Late
drawing assignments will result in the loss of a letter grade. Late assignments may not
be reworked for a higher grade. However, if a student is unhappy with their grade on
any drawing assignment that is turned in on time, they may continue to work on the
project or turn in a new one in order to raise their grade. All second-round assignments
Extra Credit – Save and submit any extra work (studies and sketches included) in either
your sketchbook or your notebook. They may be used to influence your grade.
Communication – This class will move at a very fast pace and it is critical that you
communicate with me if you are having problems of any sort. If you do not understand
something we have discussed in class, it is YOUR responsibility to come meet with
me to discuss it further. I am here to help you, but I cannot give you help if you do not
ask for it. This class will be challenging and may at times be frustrating, but it should
always be fun. Please call me, e-mail me, or catch me after class if there is anything you
want to talk about, good or bad. And remember I cannot respond to any e-mails sent
from non-UTD accounts. You must e-mail me from your UTD student account only.
Class Conduct - Cell phones and beepers must be turned off during all class sessions. If
your cell phone goes off during class, please do your best not to disrupt the class and turn
the phone off immediately. Students are expected to be on time for class. This means
prepared to begin class at the beginning of the allotted time. Please arrive a few moments
early to allow yourself time to sort papers and such. Class will begin promptly. If you
cannot help being tardy, please do your best not to disrupt the class – come in and take
your place as quietly as possible. Students will be held accountable to abide by the
College’s policies regarding cheating, plagiarism and other issues outlined in the
Academic Catalog and Student Handbook. Feel free to bring an I-Pod, etc. to listen to
music while you work, if you so desire.
Room Use and Locker Storage - The rooms we will use are free to be used whenever
they are not occupied by another class in progress. You will be assigned a locker for the
semester. All lockers must have a taped label naming its owner and semester and
instructor. Anything left in a locker or drawer after the semester ends will be disposed or
recycled. Building hours are 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. After 10 p.m. the doors are locked - you
may remain in the building to work late after 10 p.m., but please realize that once you go
out you cannot get back in. There is no curfew. The building is open all day Saturday,
but is closed Sunday. The air conditioning turns off at 10 p.m. weekdays and is
completely off on Sundays. Bring a sweater if you get cold easily. Consider bringing an
apron as this class can get very messy. Always clean up after yourself, including
wiping down your easel and your tables. We do not have a maintenance crew to do
that.
The University of Texas at Dallas administers student discipline within the procedures of
recognized and established due process. Procedures are defined and described in the
Rules and Regulations, Board of Regents, The University of Texas System, Part 1,
Chapter VI, Section 3, and in Title V, Rules on Student Services and Activities of the
university’s Handbook of Operating Procedures. Copies of these rules and regulations
are available to students in the Office of the Dean of Students, where staff members are
available to assist students in interpreting the rules and regulations (SU 1.602, 972/883-
6391).
A student at the university neither loses the rights nor escapes the responsibilities of
citizenship. He or she is expected to obey federal, state, and local laws as well as the
Regents’ Rules, university regulations, and administrative rules. Students are subject to
discipline for violating the standards of conduct whether such conduct takes place on or
off campus, or whether civil or criminal penalties are also imposed for such conduct.
Academic Integrity
The faculty expects from its students a high level of responsibility and academic honesty.
Because the value of an academic degree depends upon the absolute integrity of the work
done by the student for that degree, it is imperative that a student demonstrate a high
standard of individual honor in his or her scholastic work.
Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, statements, acts or omissions related
to applications for enrollment or the award of a degree, and/or the submission as one’s
own work or material that is not one’s own. As a general rule, scholastic dishonesty
involves one of the following acts: cheating, plagiarism, collusion and/or falsifying
academic records. Students suspected of academic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary
proceedings.
Plagiarism, especially from the web, from portions of papers for other classes, and from
any other source is unacceptable and will be dealt with under the university’s policy on
plagiarism (see general catalog for details). This course will use the resources of
turnitin.com, which searches the web for possible plagiarism and is over 90% effective.
The University of Texas at Dallas recognizes the value and efficiency of communication
between faculty/staff and students through electronic mail. At the same time, email raises
some issues concerning security and the identity of each individual in an email exchange.
The university encourages all official student email correspondence be sent only to a
student’s U.T. Dallas email address and that faculty and staff consider email from
students official only if it originates from a UTD student account. This allows the
university to maintain a high degree of confidence in the identity of all individual
corresponding and the security of the transmitted information. UTD furnishes each
student with a free email account that is to be used in all communication with university
personnel. The Department of Information Resources at U.T. Dallas provides a method
for students to have their U.T. Dallas mail forwarded to other accounts.
The administration of this institution has set deadlines for withdrawal of any college-level
courses. These dates and times are published in that semester's course catalog.
Administration procedures must be followed. It is the student's responsibility to handle
withdrawal requirements from any class. In other words, I cannot drop or withdraw any
student. You must do the proper paperwork to ensure that you will not receive a final
grade of "F" in a course if you choose not to attend the class once you are enrolled.
Procedures for student grievances are found in Title V, Rules on Student Services and
Activities, of the university’s Handbook of Operating Procedures.
Copies of these rules and regulations are available to students in the Office of the Dean of
Students, where staff members are available to assist students in interpreting the rules and
regulations.
As per university policy, incomplete grades will be granted only for work unavoidably
missed at the semester’s end and only if 70% of the course work has been completed. An
incomplete grade must be resolved within eight (8) weeks from the first day of the
subsequent long semester. If the required work to complete the course and to remove the
incomplete grade is not submitted by the specified deadline, the incomplete grade is
changed automatically to a grade of F.
Disability Services
The goal of Disability Services is to provide students with disabilities educational
opportunities equal to those of their non-disabled peers. Disability Services is located in
room 1.610 in the Student Union. Office hours are Monday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to
6:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30
p.m.
Essentially, the law requires that colleges and universities make those reasonable
adjustments necessary to eliminate discrimination on the basis of disability. For example,
it may be necessary to remove classroom prohibitions against tape recorders or animals
(in the case of dog guides) for students who are blind. Occasionally an assignment
requirement may be substituted (for example, a research paper versus an oral presentation
for a student who is hearing impaired). Classes enrolled students with mobility
impairments may have to be rescheduled in accessible facilities. The college or
university may need to provide special services such as registration, note-taking, or
mobility assistance.
It is the student’s responsibility to notify his or her professors of the need for such an
accommodation. Disability Services provides students with letters to present to faculty
members to verify that the student has a disability and needs accommodations.
Individuals requiring special accommodation should contact the professor after class or
during office hours.
The University of Texas at Dallas will excuse a student from class or other required
activities for the travel to and observance of a religious holy day for a religion whose
places of worship are exempt from property tax under Section 11.20, Tax Code, Texas
Code Annotated.
The student is encouraged to notify the instructor or activity sponsor as soon as possible
regarding the absence, preferably in advance of the assignment. The student, so excused,
If a student or an instructor disagrees about the nature of the absence [i.e., for the purpose
of observing a religious holy day] or if there is similar disagreement about whether the
student has been given a reasonable time to complete any missed assignments or
examinations, either the student or the instructor may request a ruling from the chief
executive officer of the institution, or his or her designee. The chief executive officer or
designee must take into account the legislative intent of TEC 51.911(b), and the student
and instructor will abide by the decision of the chief executive officer or designee.
