Task 1b Analysis of Contents Page

Masthead is at the top so the

branding of the magazine is
established and people are more
likely to recognise the magazine in
future and know what the magazine
is about with repetition. Also, it
follows the codes and conventions
of a contents page. Masthead is the
name of the magazine.

Date line makes it clear to the read

which issue they are reading
therefore the niche market of regular
subscribers can refer between their
copies of the magazine. Date line is
when the magazine was issued.

House style establishes the brand

identity of the magazine through the
consistency of the colour scheme and
fonts because it allows the target
audience to recognise the magazine
through the subtle details for example
the consistency of the black and red
also follows the sub-genre of rock music
since black has the connotation with
gothic music. This is the preferred
layout and usage of styles throughout
the magazine for consistency.

Layout of the magazine is to allow the

reading of the page to be easy for the
audience. So areas of the magazine have
relevance and purpose because it the
purpose of the magazine is to inform
about the genre of the magazine
therefore the contents needs to be laid
out easy so navigation is easy. Layout is
the organisation of the page.

Main Image (mise-en-scene) is larger than

the other images to gain the most attention
as it has more importance therefore
because of the size the audience are more
likely to read the article. This particular
image uses mise-en-scene through the
usage of tour-bus although that has the
denotation for the audience of travelingplus it also the connotation of the image for
knowledgeable in the genre of bands
touring since bands would tour on tour bus.
Main image is the biggest image on the
page; mise-en-scene is the theory of how
everything in a shot is in there for a reason.
The shot type of a medium close is used to
focus on the person in the image. A
medium-close-up is an image where the
persons shoulders and above is focused on.

Page Numbers are applied to the articles

so the readers are able to select the article
they want to read and therefore go to that
page to read it. This is a fundamental part
of the contents page as it gives the article
relevance hence it is a part of the codes
and conventions of the page. For page
numbers are designated numbers of the
page of where the article is situated for
navigation.

Title of Contents follows the codes

and conventions of the magazine it
also gives a clear layout to the page
since it gives the page relevance and
not just random page numbers with
articles. It also gives organisation to
the page since the heading is at the
top and the information is beneath
it. Title is the heading of the page.

Sub-headings allows the groups of

articles to be put into categories and
also makes each article clear on the
page since the sub-heading allows the
target audience scan through and focus
on the articles they prefer hence if the
target audience want read reviews they
can refer to that sub-heading since it
stands out from the smaller text. They
are headings to section categories from
others.

Tone of Language is informal therefore

a form of direct address since the target
audience can relate to the language and
almost feel like the magazine are like
their friends since they talk like them
for example Thank God would not
appear in a Broadsheet newspaper
article but suitable for a magazine. Tone
of language is how text is worded.

Fonts are all serif fonts because it is clearer to read for all people they
are also varied. For example the main article in the centre has an eroded
effect. This is because it follows the sub-genre of rock since rock music is
related with rebellion hence readers can make the connotation and
would not feel that it is out of place. The variation in fonts allow more
important texts stand out whereas less important information like a
description of the article Is smaller in size and does not stand out. Fonts
are typefaces of the text.

Columns allow sections to be spaced on the page

and not cluttered therefore it helps towards the
organisation and layout. Plus it allows the rule of
thirds to function easier since each column would
be a third. Columns are a way of organising
sections of texts from each other by alignment and
positioning.

Rule of Thirds have been applied to allow certain

articles and parts of the page to stand out. For
example the main image is in the central hotspot
since it is in the eye line of the audience and
therefore the audience are more likely going to
focus their attention the image. In addition the
left third is occupied by an index therefore the
audience can quickly refer to want they would
like rather than look through each article
individually. The rule of thirds is how sections of
the page are sectioned to allow hotspot areas to
gain more attention.
