CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Since welcoming their first customer more than 125 years ago, Manulife Financial has
grown into one of the leading global financial services group with principal operations in Asia,
Canada and the United States. The company was founded in 1887 by Sir John A. Macdonald,
Canada's first Prime Minister who was also Manulife's first president.
Their main service is to provide health, life and educational insurances for their clients.
However, due to its continuous growth in the industry, monitoring their transactions is becoming
an apparent challenge. Such transactions would be monitoring their clients due date.
For this reason, weve come up with an idea of developing a system that addresses this
problem. Thus, we constructed our system named Manulife Clients Due date Monitoring
System. It administers profiles and information of clients especially in terms of due dates of
their payments. In accordance to our clients request, the system will let the user or
administrator to view the list of clients by name and, by month/year of due date. This will
enhance their productivity and efficiency since it would lessen the time they are consuming in
checking every clients profile.

Background of the Study

Manulife began expanding internationally in 1893 with operations in the Caribbean,
quickly followed by entry to Asia in 1897 and the United States in 1903.
In the 1980s and 1990s Manulife grew through mergers and acquisitions, leading to its
largest acquisition to date, the 2004 integration of U.S. based John Hancock Financial Services.
That made Manulife at the time the largest life insurer in Canada, second largest in North
America, and fifth largest in the world.

In 2008 Gail Cook-Bennett became the first female Chair of the Board and in 2009,
Donald Guloien became our 13th president. Manulife has been conducting business in the
Philippines for over 100 years. One of the oldest life insurance firms in the country, Manulife
received its license in 1907 to operate in Manila, 20 years after the company was first
established in Toronto, Canada in 1887 by Sir John A. Macdonald, who had concurrently held
the post of Prime Minister of Canada.
The first foreign company to list in the Philippine Stock Exchange, Manulife is among the
top life insurance companies in the country today. A dedication to client service has paved the
way for the Company's growth and increased financial strength throughout the years.
The Manufacturers Life Insurance Co. (Phils.), Inc. ("Manulife Philippines") is a wholly
owned subsidiary of The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company, the insurance company of
Manulife Financial Corporation (MFC).
On August 24, 2000, Manulife received approval from the Philippine Securities and
Exchange Commission (SEC) to operate its pre-need affiliate Manulife Financial Plans, Inc.
(MFP). MFP, a subsidiary of Manulife Philippines, is committed to offering high quality pension
and education plans to the public.
One of the main problems they are facing is having a difficulty in monitoring all of the
agents and clients they are handling because of its big number. And it can be a detriment if they
cannot check regularly the due dates of clients and their profiles. This led us to make this
Manulife Clients Due date Monitoring System to help them in their hitch.

Statement of the problem

The first foreign company to list in the Philippine Stock Exchange, Manulife is among the
top life insurance companies in the country today. Their dedication on providing excellent
service has paved the way for the Company's growth and increased financial strength
throughout the years. But a great corporation can have detriment if they cannot check regularly

the due dates of clients and their profiles. They are having difficulty in monitoring all of the
agents and clients they are handling due to its large number.
This research also attempted to answer the following questions:
1. Are they having difficulty in monitoring all the clients?
2. Will the proposed system be more reliable than the existing?
3. Are the results in line with maximum use of resources?
4. It is user-friendly and easy to navigate?
5. Can it handle multiple tasks?
6. Will it be applicable and accessible to all users?

Conceptual Framework
In the existing system of Manulife they are only allowed to view the profile of each client they
are handling. There is no specific function where they can be notified about the due dates of
their payments and it is very hard to check it one by one. But in the proposed system, there is a
portion in the page where they could easily see the people who need to renew their documents.
The proposed system also provides some other functions that will surely help the company.

Theoretical Framework
The proposed system, Manulife Due Date Monitoring System will ask you to log in as an
admin to ensure the security of the system. This will prevent unauthorized personnel to gain
access on this system. The administrator could also add clients and view each profile of anyone
under their lists. As an output, you will lead to a more manageable system that will provide all
the functions and task that this company needs.

Hypothesis
The hypothesis of this study is intended to tentatively figure out what the researchers
and respondents need to have a temporary answer on the problem stated. The hypothesis was
based only by the data gathering tool done by the researchers thru the questionnaire.
It is possible to make a system in which the Manulife will be able to monitor every
transaction they are handling and minimize inaccuracies. The proposed system will eradicate
the need to look every single document of a person to check the validity of their documents,

because it will automatically post on the page. Thus, improving workload efficiency and agents
performance.

Significance of the Study

The significance of this study will be at most for the Manulife Company which is our
beneficiary. But further more it can also help the future researchers as well.
To the Administrator. It would be hassle free for them to monitor and checked regularly
each client transaction and due date payment. It will also be less time consuming than the
existing system. It would also provide functions that will surely help them to have an effective
monitoring.
To the Company. The proposed system will help them to be more productive and gain
improvement in terms of quality of service they are offering for their clients.
To the Future Researchers. This study will stand as a guide for the future researchers
and as a first wave of development for their system.

Scope and Limitation

This study focuses on how the system will solve the problem of the Manulifes existing
system. It only provides functions which are needed by the company and not applicable for any
other agencies. The time frame of data gathered of this study was completed on the third week
of October of the year 2014. The data collected were those associated with the Manulife Due
Date Monitoring System. The respondents of the survey came from the department who
handles the monitoring part and whom will also be the beneficiary of this system. The total
population of the respondents is 10 which is the total number of the person on that department
with the branch manager.
This study was limited to only for the transactions and clients handled by the Manulife
Due Date Monitoring System.

PHP Monitoring Solution
Get to the root cause of performance bottlenecks in your PHP applications with AppDynamics
for PHP. With AppDynamics' PHP monitoring solution, you can drill down into call stack traces
to diagnose performance bottlenecks in your mission-critical PHP application all while running
in a live production environment.

Key Benefits

Visualize and monitor your PHP web server dependencies

Understand and prioritize based on business transaction context

Real-time monitoring of server performance, health and exceptions

Rapidly troubleshoot latency at the code level

Visualize application performance in real time

AppDynamics automatically detects your application architecture, including your own application
servers as well as remote web service and database calls. AppDynamics then displays your
architecture in the Application Flowmap, allowing you to quickly see where the bottlenecks are
in your production application.

Understand performance the way your end users do

Unlike many PHP management solutions, AppDynamics buckets and manages your data traffic
into Business Transactions, allowing you to quickly see how your end users are being affected
when performance degrades. Better yet, drill down directly into a Business Transaction to get
the associated call stack traces and rapidly diagnose root cause.

Trend PHP performance over time

Use AppDynamics' powerful analytics engine to understand application performance trends
over time and create intuitive dashboards for other teams and management to watch.

Drill down into the complete call stack

Unlike other PHP monitoring tools, AppDynamics collects a complete call stack trace for slow
transactions and stalls, allowing you to see how long every line of code took to execute in your
server. Find performance bottlenecks in a matter of seconds (instead of hours).

Use performance baselines for intelligent alerting

Many PHP management tools include alerting capabilities, but their static, global thresholds
often result in alert storming or, worse, missing a developing problem in the application. With
AppDynamics' intelligent baselines, you'll never have to receive an unnecessary alert again
set up alerts to fire only on irregular performance for a particular Business Transaction,
infrastructure or application metric.

Key Features of PHP Monitoring

Monitoring systems

With an electrical system connecting all the equipment with power, the control system
controlling all the actions of the system, a monitoring system is needed to log the actions,
performance and status of the components in these systems.

11

Monitoring systems technologies log the actions, performance and status of the
components in the electrical and control systems. They collect data from various components,
sub-systems or a system, which is then used to draw certain conclusions, based on algorithms
programmed into the collection system. The monitoring collection system can be ground-based,
while monitoring systems flying in the air, floating on the sea, or generating electricity on
another continent.
All monitoring systems work on the simple basis of:
Sense - Acquire - Transfer - Analyse - Act.
The aim of a monitoring system is to maximize reliability and availability. A monitoring
system will not stop a system from malfunctioning, but will log system data from which system
characteristics can be deduced. This provides our customers with advanced data on the status
of their system and data to plan maintenance schedules around.
The monitoring system collects data from all over the system and provides feedback at a
specific location, this location can either be the control room on a ship or the control room on
land receiving feedback signals from a fleet of aircraft, which are currently flying, or the
generator set situated in on an oilrig.
The monitoring systems provides us with the freedom of knowing what our system is
doing, how well it is doing it and will help predict how it will react next time we run it.
Rolls-Royce is improving its capability continuously to improve its monitoring capability
and providing its customers with a higher level of in-service support.

CHAPTER 3
Research Methodology
Research Design
The research design used was descriptive design. Descriptive research design is a
scientific method which involves observing and describing the behavior of a subject without
influencing it in any way. Many scientific disciplines, especially social science and psychology,
use this method to obtain a general overview of the subject.
Descriptive research design is a valid method for researching specific subjects and as a
precursor to more quantitative studies. Whilst there are some valid concerns about the statistical
validity, as long as the limitations are understood by the researcher, this type of study is an
invaluable scientific tool.
While the results are always open to question and to different interpretations, there is no
doubt that they are preferable to performing no research at all.
It include case-study, naturalistic observation, and survey which is similar to what we
have done.
Population and Sampling
In this study, we use Non-probability sampling-a sampling technique where the samples
are gathered in a process that does not give all the individuals in the population equal chances
of being selected. A purposive, or judgmental, sample is one that is selected based on the
knowledge of a population and the purpose of the study. We decided to take surveys in each
team leaders to have their side and opinion about this system, branch head who suggested on
making this program, and its secretary who is helping her manage all the agents in their
company. They are also the people who will benefit the most in the proposed system. A total of
7 respondents were taken.

13

Statistical Treatment of Data

In working with an average, there is one central formula that is used to answer questions
pertaining to an average. This formula can be manipulated in many different ways, enabling test
writers to create different iterations on mean problems.
The following is the formal mathematical formula for the arithmetic mean (a fancy name for the
average).

A = average (or arithmetic mean)

n = the number of terms (e.g., the number of items or numbers being averaged)
x1 = the value of each individual item in the list of numbers being averaged
For more understandable form:
A= (5 N) + (4 N) + (3 N) + (2 N) + (1 N)
T
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 = ratings
N= number of respondent who answered a specific rating
A= average
T= total number of respondents

Research Procedure
First we think about our system that can help a company to address the problem they
are experiencing. Our professor chose monitoring system from the topics we gave her. We
search of a company in need of a new monitoring system. Thus, we found the Manulife

14

Insurance Company whos in need of upgrading their current client monitoring system. We
conducted a survey, proposed the new system and let them practice the new system.
The area covered by the survey was in Finance corner Industry Streets, Madrigal
Business Park,Alabang, Muntinlupa City. Our respondents came from Manulife Philippines Alabang Office. From ABE International Business College-Las Pias campus we ride on a
jeepney via Alabang-Zapote Road.

System Overview
The proposed system is designed to easily monitor the due dates of the client, and to our
system you can update, you can search the client by name and by month and by year of their
due dates. You can view the profile of the client.

Instrumentation
Survey Forms
In survey method research, participants answer questions administered through interviews or
questionnaires. After participants answer the questions, researchers describe the responses
given. In order for the survey to be both reliable and valid it is important that the questions are
constructed properly. Questions should be written so they are clear and easy to comprehend.
Respondents
The respondents of the study came from each team in the company who are assigned to
monitor the agents and clients they are handling. Since they have so many agents, we just
consider the team leaders from 5 teams they have, branch head and its secretary as a
respondent.

Analytical Tool
In this study we use system flowcharts to show the process that undergoes in this system.

CHAPTER 5
Summary, Conclusion, & Recommendation
Summary

As the Manulife Company continuous to grow and acquire new clients they were able to
build a secure rank as one of the leading financial service group in the country. However, due to
its continuous growth on clients number and demands, monitoring their transactions by only a
few numbers of agents became a setback on their company. This is the main reason why we
came up in doing this Agents/Clients Monitoring System. We made some interviews with the
branch manager and company secretary to determine the problem that they are having on their
transactions and to establish the project specification that we must fulfill. We were given
permission to access their existing system to better understand the flow of their transactions
and to be able to see the changes we need to implement to improve work efficiency.

Conclusion

We therefore conclude that it is possible to make a system where in they could search
by name or by month/year. In this way, it will lessen the time they are consuming in monitoring
the due dates of each client.

Recommendation

We recommend to the future researchers who will continue our study to make it online,
to add more information about the agents and clients and to connect it with emails. It is also
better if they could connect it with the main database of the company.
