General Instruction
(i) All questions are compulsory.
(ii) Question number 1 to 8 are very short answer questions, carrying 1 mark each. Answer these in one
word or about one sentence each.
(iii) Question number 9 to 18 are short answer questions, carrying 2 marks each. Answer these in about 30
words each.
(iv) Question number 19 to 27 are short answer questions, carrying 3 marks each. Answer these in about
40 words each.
(v) Question number 28 to 30 are long answer questions, carrying 5 marks each. Answer these in about 70
words each.
(vi) Use log table, if necessary.
(vii) Use of calculator is not permitted.
1. Give IUPAC name of the following organic compound: CH3CH=C(CH3)CH(Br)CH3
2. Define paramagnetism with an example.
3. What is primary cell? Give an example.
4. What are Protective Colloids ?
5. Why are alcohols easily miscible with water?
6. Write the structure of 4-Methylpent-3-en-2-one.
7. State Henrys law.
8. What is activation energy ?
9. Ethylene glycol (molar mass= 62g/mol) is common automobile antifreeze. Calculate the freezing point of
a solution containing 12.4 g of this substance in 100 g of water. Would it be advisable to keep this
substance in the car radiator during summer? Given Kf for water = 1.86 K kg/mol and Kb for water = 0.512
K kg/mol
10. Explain the role of:
(i) Cryolite in the electrolytic reduction of alumina.
(ii) Carbon monoxide in the purification of nickel.
11. Formulate the galvanic cell in which the following reaction takes place:
Zn(s) + 2Ag+(aq)
Zn 2+(aq) + 2Ag(s)
State:
(i) Which one of its electrodes is negatively charged?
(ii) The reaction-taking place at each of its electrode.
(iii) The carriers of current within this cell.
12. Give an example of:
(a) Fittig reaction
(b) Finkelstein reaction.
13. What is meant by the rate constant, k of a reaction? If the concentration is expressed in mol L-1 units
and time in seconds, what would be the units for k (i) for a zero order reaction and (ii) for a first order
reaction?
14. State the differences between Schottky defect and Frenkel defect.
15. Describe the underlying principle of each of the following metal refining methods:
(i) Electrolytic refining of metals
(ii) Vapour phase refining of metals.
(a) A reaction is of first order in A and of second order in B. Write the differential rate equation for this
reaction. How will its initial rate be affected if the concentration of both A and B are together doubled?
(b) The half-life for decay of radioactive 14C is 5730 years. An archaeological artefact containing wood has
only 80% of the 14C activity as found in living trees. Calculate the age of the artefact.
29. (a) Define molar conductivity of a substance and describe how for weak and strong electrolytes, molar
conductivity changes with concentration of solute. How is such change explained?
(b) A voltaic cell is set up at 25 oC with the following half cells:
Ag+ (0.001 M) | Ag and Cu2+ (0.10 M) | Cu
What would be the voltage of this cell? (E0cell = 0.46 V)
OR
(a) State the relationship amongst cell constant of a cell, resistance of the solution in the cell and
conductivity of the solution. How is molar conductivity of a solute related to conductivity of its solution?
(b) A voltaic cell is set up at 250C with the following half-cells:
Al | Al3+ (0.001 M) and Ni | Ni2+ (0.50 M)
Calculate the cell voltage [E0Ni2+/Ni = 0.25 V, E0Al/Al+3 = 1.66 V]
