9. Ethylene glycol (molar mass= 62g/mol) is common automobile antifreeze. Calculate the freezing point of
a solution containing 12.4 g of this substance in 100 g of water. Would it be advisable to keep this
substance in the car radiator during summer? Given Kf for water = 1.86 K kg/mol and Kb for water = 0.512
K kg/mol

20. What is the difference between multimolecular and macromolecular colloids? Give one example of each
type. How are associated colloids different from these two types of colloids?

25. 100 mg of a protein is dissolved in just enough water to make 10.0 mL of solution. If this solution has an
osmotic pressure of 13.3 mm Hg at 25oC, what is the molar mass of the protein? (R = 0.0821 L atm mol1
K1 and 760 mm Hg = 1 atm.)

A solution of glycerol (C3H8O3; molar mass = 92 g mol-1) in water was prepared by dissolving some glycerol
in 500 g of water. This solution has a boiling point of 100.42C. What mass of glycerol was dissolved to
make this solution? Kb for water = 0.512K kg mol-1.
26. Name the reagents that are used in the following conversions:
(i) A primary alcohol to an aldehyde
(ii) Butan-2-one to butan-2-ol
(iii) Phenol to 2, 4, 6-tribromophenol
27. (a) Which of the following two compounds would react faster by SN2 pathway; 1-bromobutne or 2bromobutane and why?
(b) Allyl chloride is more reactive than n-propyl chloride towards nucleophilic substitution
reaction. Explain why?
( c) Haloalkanes reacts with KCN to give alkyl cyanide as main product while with AgCN they form
isocyanide as main product. Give reason.
28. (a) Derive the general form of the expression for the half-life of a first order reaction.
(b) The decomposition of NH3 on platinum surface is a zero order reaction. What are the rates of production
of N2 and H2 if k = 2.5 X10-4 mol-1L s-1 ?

(a) A reaction is of first order in A and of second order in B. Write the differential rate equation for this
reaction. How will its initial rate be affected if the concentration of both A and B are together doubled?
(b) The half-life for decay of radioactive 14C is 5730 years. An archaeological artefact containing wood has
only 80% of the 14C activity as found in living trees. Calculate the age of the artefact.
29. (a) Define molar conductivity of a substance and describe how for weak and strong electrolytes, molar
conductivity changes with concentration of solute. How is such change explained?
(b) A voltaic cell is set up at 25 oC with the following half cells:
Ag+ (0.001 M) | Ag and Cu2+ (0.10 M) | Cu
What would be the voltage of this cell? (E0cell = 0.46 V)
OR
(a) State the relationship amongst cell constant of a cell, resistance of the solution in the cell and
conductivity of the solution. How is molar conductivity of a solute related to conductivity of its solution?
(b) A voltaic cell is set up at 250C with the following half-cells:
Al | Al3+ (0.001 M) and Ni | Ni2+ (0.50 M)
Calculate the cell voltage [E0Ni2+/Ni = 0.25 V, E0Al/Al+3 = 1.66 V]
